Poster: A snowHead
|
I tried out snowboarding on my last day in La Plagne (last Friday) and landed on my tailbone (yes, I know, no smart remarks please...). It's still pretty sore when getting out of a chair, couching, blowing my nose, moving the wrong way but fine when up and walking.
1. Any tips to help get better and not aggravate it?
2. How sore does it need to be before I worry I've broken something and go to the doctors?!
Cheers...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Can you stand in front of a wall with your hands about head height and see if you can lift either leg....

kitenski,
Sounds like something off Candid Camera... I've just tried and I can (assuming I was meant to be keeping my back to the wall and moving my legs forward).

From very bitter experience if its not responding to ibuprofen, heatpack/icepack and rest after a week see your doctor. You probably have bruised it but occasionally a condition called coccygodynia raises its ugly head, this can usually be treated quickly and easily with anti inflammatory tabs and or a cortisone injection, don't for gods sake do what I did and ignore it assuming it would get better month after month to find you now can't move without 40 tabs a day and are waiting to have the damn thing amputated!

nah, face the wall, arms straight, then try lifting your leg up! On my first aid course the chap said if you cannot lift the leg off the ground a good distance get to the drs/hospital ASAP! HAving said that if it doesn't clear up soon I'd be tempted to get a medical opinion...

kitenski - OK, I can do that.
lilywhite - thanks for the advice. If it's not getting better by the weekend I'll go see someone.

mrsalexe, best of luck with it. Some years ago I injured my coccyx after someone crashed into me. It was very painful indeed. I saw the GP after a few weeks as it wasn't getting better and she sent me for xrays which showed it was fractured. But short of anti-inflammatories and time there is not really anything to be done with it. It took months before it was completely better about 4-5 IIRC. You have my sympathies, it is very painful indeed.

Also from experience (except that less glamorously I fell downstairs) get a coccyx cushion with a wedge cut out of it for sitting on. It may make you feel like a bit of a plonker, but using one consistently both hurts less and helps you to recover.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Sarah, both of you really, glad its all better for you. As I said mine went on so long before I did anything about it, was my own fault really, was 7 years old at time of original injury and as it only hurt when I sat, so I didnt sit! 7 year old logic, at that age you just get used to it and assume its normal, I was sporty thru school and did all the art and science subjects so mainly had stools instead of chairs to worry about so I would hang my butt off the edge. Its only since I hit 25+ that its caused more grief as my grown up self has meetings round boardroom tables rather than in the pub round the pool table! And of course working at a computer more and more does not help either. But hopefully there will be a big improvement soon, I see the surgeon next month and am hoping for a date for the op soon!

I got myself checked out at the minor injuries unit on Tuesday (as I had to travel with work the following day and didn't want to get worse away from home) - they said it didn't look as though anything is broken as there was not enough pain or bruising. They said it's soft tissue damage of some type and to allow 4-6 weeks to get better. In the meantime I'm just aking sure I keep mobile and choose my seating positions wisely...
