Has anyone had experience ( or just seen a set-up) with mounting a pistol grip camera, such as this Sanyo, on the side of a helmet?
I have one of those and I am curious to see if it would be possible at all..

I have one of thee too
i have seen a few heath robinson solutions for the sanyo xacti range out in les arcs but none seem like real purchased solution. sure there must be one out there
the one i saw looked a bit like a walkie talkie case that had been modified
i have the contour hd to play with this coming week, may try running both one ither side or one facing back

cheztichot,
Thanks. What I have seen on the net has also been very DIY.
There are a few mounts around that may work out but would seem to make the whole set-up fairly big..
And I can't have excess drag!

I have a Sanyo like that and while it is a nice little camera is has a very narrow field of view compared to a typical helmetcam. IMO a very wide field of view is kind of essential for a helmet cam.

rob@rar,
Yes, I realise that but I don't really want to spend the money on a dedicated camera. It's just for the odd fun... I didn't get the Sanyo for that purpose.

Used mine last week for the first time in "real conditions" with the goggle mount; worked a treat.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have always imagined that the camera would wobble quite a lot with velcro, even if it wouldn't fall off...

If the two surfaces curved away from each other too much then I imagine it could. Folks do use Velcro for securing camera gear but whether you want to risk your camera, I guess, is up to you. If there's no tripod mount then I can't see any other option.

You know it makes sense.
|
altis,
There is a tripod mount but it is at the bottom of the camera, making awkward to find suitable mounts.
Probably not worth the hassle but I was just curious to see if anyone had tried it before...

I was only partly joking before with the duck tap. Just looked at the type of camera you are planning to use. Do you really want something that big and heavy attached to your head? The proper helmet cams like the contour or go pro are a lot smaller and lighter!

That thread is just 1/4" Whitworth so it's probably a fairly easy job to pop-rivet an angle bracket to the side of your helmet.
But, then again, it might not be wise to do that

The camera itself ain't that big. I carry it in my trousers pocket quite comfortably, one of the reasons I got one as the size of my previous camcorder meant that 95% of the time I couldn't be bothered to take it with me..
Last year a mate of mine filmed us with as similar device (not full HD), with camera in hand, and I thought he footage wasn't too bad. So I thought maybe I could find some helmet set-up to improve on that, without spending ££ on a dedicated Contour/Go Pro like camera which won't get much use anyway, and isn't stricltly need since I only intend to do proper "amateur" stuff..
All "suitable" mounts I have seen, for mounting the camera on the side of the helmet, look like they're twice the size of the camera.
And a mount on the top of the helmet, easy and cheap, makes me look like I'm proper sharking!
I am not prepared to duck tape the helmet and/or camera so I said, I just asked out of curiosity but it's not worth the hassle..

Hi, can I make an alternative suggestion? Does the camera have a screw mount fitting on its base? If so, have you thought about mounting it to one of your poles? Obviously not helmet-cam, but some of the most interesting ski footage IMHO comes from pole mounted cameras held over behind the skier.
Another alternative would be to Velcro the camera to your leg or boot. Lots of alternative shots to be had with a little imaginative mounting which makes footage far more interesting...
Have a go and have fun!
