Poster: A snowHead

My gut reaction is that I should be covered, but I tend to take out holiday insurance to cover our wintersports visits to foreign countries and select the additional winter sports options to do so. 'Additional' to me does mean 'additional' if I get a year long policy I tend to assume it would cover me for a foreign holiday in the summer (providing there is overlap in the countries covered). This is not something I've done so far, but we are visiting Switzerland to see our friends this summer. If the proverbial were to hit the fan do you think that my policy with added winter sports cover would cover me? Does anyone else use their annual policy to cover foreign summer holiday trips too, if so have you ever claimed and ran into problems?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Megamum, I assume you mean summer skiing? Check the wording on your policy. I have the bank account linked cover with NatWest Advantage Gold and that has year-round cover for wintersports including long-haul, but is limited to 31 days in a year and does not include off-piste without a guide. This is perfectly sufficient for me. It's my dream to be able to ski on my birthday (late July) but that would mean going to Chile or something. Highly unlikely at present.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

queen bodecia, A few glaciers open Europe too, not quite the same as Chile though. My birthday is in July too and for my 50th it came down to skiing in Chile or a more exotic summer holiday. As it was just my daughter and me she managed to persuade me to do Hawaii so no Chile!

No - not summer skiing - just summer holidays - visiting friends on a city break, sitting on a beach in the sun, that sort of thing. The sort of holiday were you might want medical cover if you were in a RTA etc.

Megamum, who is your policy with? All the policies I have looked are are normal travel insurance policies with winter sports as an extra. your policy will tell you what is covered.

Dog tag - when you book it up it tends to imply that you buy the snow sports package as an extra on a policy. I've always assumed that this doesn't just turn the whole thing into a just a winter sports insurance. I just wondered if anyone else used their policy to cover their summer breaks too.

Megamum, I use my annual policy for all my holidays. The winter sports is the extra piece.
Actually, I have an annual policy with my bank account which makes me double insured for non-skiing hols. If I made a claim they would share the liability. Unfortunately the winter sports upgrade with Lloyds insurance is no longer suitable for the amount and type of skiing I want to do so I have to get a separate policy.
