Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ryanair boot bags included in ski carriage?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I suspect that your ski carriage doesn't include a boot bag - anyone got recent experience?

My boots won't fit into my ski bag and while they can go in my suitcase there'll be hardly any room for anything else

thanks

I'm amazed that flying Ryanair with hold luggage and skis isn't much more expensive than a grown-up airline. That's been my experience.

No experience, sorry, never had the need to use them. But the general feeling seems to be that you must be spot on within their rules....or they will hurt you Sad

Luggage rules, esp sports goods/extra's etc,are getting ever more restrictive.I would take a very close look at their luggage T&C's,but dont be too surprised if its as clear as an Irish bog, that's quite deliberate IMHO.

Hopefully, someone will pop in shortly with real time experience?

snowskisnow, indeed, that's why I'm asking wink I always take a close look at T&Cs and it doesn't mention boots or boot bag at all. The T&C says "(sports equipment....) these items may be carried in the hold of the aircraft in addition to your personal checked baggage allowance up to a limit of 20* kilos per item". It doesn't say it has to be in one bag

I use RA quite a lot as it's handy and usually affordable but I'm very careful to fit in with the rules....

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Right....here goes....my interpretation of the rules(which may,or may not,be correct Confused )

Quote:
Each passenger may check in up to two checked bags upon payment of the applicable checked baggage fees by electing to purchase a checked baggage allowance of either 15 kilos or 20 kilos when make their initial booking

To be read alongside the sporting goods conditions.....
Quote:
these items may be carried in the hold of the aircraft in addition to your personal checked baggage allowance up to a limit of 20 kilos per item upon payment of a discounted online fee of £40/€40 per item, per one way flight

The bit that concerns me(in the sporting goods terms)is the phrase 'per item'...along with the cost of £40 ea way Shocked Unless you are looking for something super knarly, you could hire for that?
Anyway...ski bag=1 item,+ boot bag=2 items=£80 ea way Shocked Shocked
However, you can check in up to two bags, the only restriction being the amount of weight you purchase.
So,purchase 20kg + 1 sporting goods.Split the 20kg between your boot bag and suitcase...if its tight, put some of it in your ski bag(you have 20kg there as well),but be wary. Some airlines are getting over zealous, and state ski bags hold ski's and nothing else!

Get a bigger suitcase.I use a squashy 'Wheeley' roller bag.I can get boots etc in easily within 20kg.I always aim for 18kg anyway, being cautious.
I've not checked the price for 20kg of luggage, but suspect its equally high.Hope you got your ticket for 99p wink

Any other interpretations?

snowskisnow, Thanks for taking the trouble, but I can do the interpretation myself and I have plenty of experience of splitting stuff to meet the rules; just never needed to with Ryanair till now!

I would be perfectly happy to make my boot bag my second hold bag, but I still only get 20kg so they might as well be in the hold bag. My ski bag doesn't hold much more than a pair of skis. Anyway, my interpretation is different to yours. I think that you pay for each bag and you are permitted only to check in a maximum of 2 bags, plus sporting equipment. The baggage fee applies for each bag.

I do not want a wheely bag - I've had one and sold it. The suitcase I have is as large as I can manage. when it's full it's more than 20kg if boots are in there so bigger only means I would go over weight. In fact it was 27kg when I came back from South Africa.

The total price of the RA ticket was the cheapest combination at the time; I have no problem with the overall cost. In fact it was cheaper to buy an extra hold bag with RA last time than to send the stuff (towels and bed linens) out by courier or post.

You haven't checked the price of a 20kg bag vs a 15kg bag. I have and I judged it was worth it for me. the price varies depending on the season and the flight. My flights are low season so £15 each way for a 15kg bag, £25 each way for 20kg bag.

My solution might be just to buy another 15kg bag for £15 for the outward trip as I'll be leaving stuff there.

If anyone else is kind enough to reply I'd like to know about actual experience please, not interpretation or debates on price.

Last time I brought skis on RA was 2009. It was Dublin - Turin. As far as i remember the T&Cs on their website was similarly vague at the time. At the time, I did quite a bit of 'research', including calling Ryanair (I got through which was a minor miracle in itself!) and the result was that you were allowed to bring both the bootbag and ski bag as part of the ski carriage as long as the two were properly fastened and secured together (we used one of those hardcore plastic ties/fasteners). Alternatively if your sk ibag fits boots, you were allowed to shove them in there. It all worked out very smoothly in the airport actually. And on the return leg.

But two words of warning:

1. I have no idea if the policy remains the same (although it doesnt seem there has been a clear change in policy since)
2. What I heard from many people at the time was that the policy varied from airport to airport.

I would suggest that you give RA a call and ask them directly. You might let me know the result as I am travelling RA in 2 weeks myself.

Right. I've flown Ryanair skiing before. The baggage limit we had was 15 kilos, but you COULD take a separate boot bag - so the 15kg was for case and boots, but obviously didn't include skis.

Basically I shoved everything I could into my ski bag because no weight was specified for that! They were really strict on the baggage weights too, tightarses.

That was my experience anyway, it may differ for others. This was two or three years ago.

All the best holidayloverxx, Zell again? Smile

holidayloverxx, I was on ebay today and saw that wintershak had a F1 ski bag that takes skis and boots. Cost was about £12.

I've used RA to Norway and ut my skis in clingfilm to keep my clothes clean and popped in lots of clothes into the skibag. I then had a cheap nylon sportsbag and put my boots in that side by side (ahemm.... think of a number between 68 and 70) nose to tail and took them as hand luggage.

glasgowcyclops, Thanks; but I had one and sold it - too unwieldy for me. I need my hand luggage for other stuff so on this occasion boots are no go.
