Poster: A snowHead
|
We are driving from Italy to ulm today and was going to go over the fernpass via Innsbruck and fussen. Have done this route a few times so know it well. As we have had sun all week it's hard to gauge Austria from here though I know they have had big snowfalls. Is this route likely to be open and clear? We have winterised car. Would prefer this route than via Munich.
Many thanks.

Is the Fernpass a toll road?

No but if you are taking the Austrian motorway onthe ohter side you will need to buy a carnet at some point.

Thanks for all the info. Will go that way now. We have all the tolls for the motorways already so that's not an issue. Just got a short days skiing ahead of us till we leave this afternoon.

Part of the route is Schnellstrasse and the Vignette is supposedly required for those. There is a sign to that effect on the section near Lermoos just before the tunnel on the German side. I presume because people coming from Germany may not have one.

Samerberg Sue, that's an interesting point actually. I have never bought a Vignette when I go over the Fernpass, unless of course I'm going to use the motorway later on. There seems to be some disagreement about whether you actually do need one or not. Most of the websites of hotels in that region seem to indicate that you don't need one to go over the Fernpass...

Steilhang, I've always wondered about that sign too. I often stay at the Schlosshotel Fernsteinersee at the top of the pass (alpine lake diving in summer) and notice it every time I come from Garmisch. As I have an annual vignette, it does not bother me. But for example, the Arlberger Schnellstrasse is "Maut Pflichtige" I know for sure and the ASFINAG make a bomb out of catching people who think otherwise.
