Poster: A snowHead

The sun is shining here in Breck, and although the conditions are not as good as the resort would like they had a dump last week and we have some good packed powder. The upper bowls are slowly opening (not that I am brave enough to go up there) and more snow is forecast for later in the week.
For a cowardly intermediate like me conditions are perfect!

It's very frustrating, there is a major snow storm down in Denver, with flights cancelled etc, and all we have had up here is a miserable 2 inches!
The groomed slopes are holding out well but they are getting worn in places and could do with another covering. We are forecast with light snow all day so hopefully we will have a bit more accumulation.
On the bright side for us, the bad weather in Denver will keep some of the weekend crowd away so the slopes will be quieter, but not so good for local businesses

nigels, we have had a few flurries over the last few days but the runs are beginning to get a bit cruddy. We went over to Keystone yesterday and I fell near the bottom of a run where it had got a bit icy.
Breck still has some good skiing, especially during the week when it is quite so the runs are not getting too scrapped, but they could definitely do with a bit more snow. Not much appears to be forecast at the moment though

Great powder day at Breck today, we were forecast a couple of inches of snow and had about a foot, and still got some flurries . We were talking to someone on the chairlift who said it was waist deep in the bowls

Just back from two weeks in Breckenridge where I took over Anniegirl's deckchair!
Wall to wall sunshine and high temps around 16 deg just about every day except for one day where we had all of 2 inches of fresh snow.
Was our first time skiing in the US and this was their worst season in Breck in 30 years.
However it was still great skiing, very comparable conditions to the 3 Valleys at Easter where we have skied 2 out of the last 3 seasons.
Rock hard corduruoy first thing softening up very quickly indeed to heavy gloopy artificial mush on the lower slopes (bear in mind the lower slopes are at around 3,000m!) But there are loads of trees and so it was easy to keep on the firmer stuff in the shade of the trees.
Lots of bare patches, lots of isolated stones on piste, lots of tree stumps/branches sticking through, one of our party tore the back right out of his jacket when he fell on the Ore Bucket and snagged the jacket on a tree stump. Runs were closing by the day. Two thirds of the runs were closed. Lots of the tough stuff closed due to inadequate depth.
Went to Arapahoe Basin for the day last Tuesday, they had had 5 inches of fresh snow compared to Breck's 2" and you could feel the difference. The snow there was definitely packed powder rather than spring, the runs were in better shape, and there was no noticeable artificial slush on the lower runs compared to Breck. Went back to A-Basin again on Monday and still very good conditions on what was open (a lot closed), much better snow there than Breck.
Breck closing for 7 day ops this weekend but planning to stay open at weekends for the next few weeks. A-Basin planning to stay open through til end of June they managed til 4th July last year.
Had a great time there despite the disappointing snow conditions, great resort
