Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I made a map of Alpine ski resorts

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I couldn't find a google map of all the European ski resorts anywhere online, so I decided to roll my own. It's pretty handy, and also quite illuminating so I thought I'd share it with you guys here. It's centered on Mayrhofen because that's where I just booked a trip to Happy (first week in Feb, can't wait!). It might be missing a few, but there are about 250 shown on it so it's pretty comprehensive. I also Made a slightly sparser one which just shows the top resorts as ordered by resort height and total number of runs.

Hope you find it useful!

http://duncang.com/skidata/map-all.html
http://duncang.com/skidata/map-top.html

Edit: Some people wanted even more data. So here you go: http://duncang.com/skidata/map-even-more.html (I hope you have a modern computer, there's over 1000 resorts on that one!)

Also: currently doesn't work in internet explorer. I'll take a look at fixing that when I get a chance, but until then might I recommend google's browser? : http://www.google.co.uk/chrome

Nice idea, like it. There are a few issues with resorts being in the wrong place or missing, if you;d like feedbacK?

Gladly! The second one was mostly done by hand so it should be more correct. For the first I'm relying on data from a webpage I found, which is probably less reliable.

duncang, nice effort but I think 250 is a little short of comprehensive, have a look at

http://www.bergfex.com/oesterreich/ - ski resorts listed in Austria 361
http://www.bergfex.com/frankreich/ france 106
http://www.bergfex.com/schweiz/ - switzerland 184
http://www.bergfex.com/italien/ - italy 136
http://www.bergfex.com/deutschland/ - germany 219 (that's more than i ever realised)

Not sure how complete the above is, may have a german / austrian bias but gives an idea of the number of resorts about.

Alta Badia is a few valleys away from the marker too Wink

Kaltenbach-Hochfügen is missing (As you're going to Mayrhofen, I recommend that for a day out)

Every resort in Slovenia (Bovec, KG, ...)?

Nice map though. /me start making a list of convenient ones to go to...

Looks like it was missing from the original dataset, probably because Morzine's in there. Have added it now.

Ah yes, "comprehensive" might have been a little bit of an overstatement. It has got all the major ones though, as far as I could tell. I was mostly looking at the map of the top resorts as those were the ones I was choosing between. That bergfex site is pretty neat, I hadn't come across it before. They definitely have more comprehensive data than the set I was working from.

And there are another 284 European resorts there outwith the Alps. I reckon duncanq might have to expand the map. Laughing

Changed it. Hopefully that will clear up the confusion. I might stick another together with the larger dataset on bergfex.com, which would be more of a Europe wide map.

Expanding it would be good. Cool I've never done anything like it before but guessing you know about this stuff, how difficult would it be to make a Google Earth 'overlay' from your map ? I like Google Earth because you can often make out the ski lifts, the gradients, the natural terrain versus the bulldozer flattened runs in the Alps and even little details like the snow fences in resorts in Scotland etc.

I don't mean to say that duncang's efforts aren't worthwhile and I've bookmarked the link because it's good stuff but I've been spoilt by google earth I suppose. I'd asked whether transferring the work to a google earth overlay was very difficult because to me, satellite imagery with spatial information registers its meaning in this wee brain more easily. Great effort!

For completeness (in my local areas), in the SkiWelt: Söll, Scheffau, Going and Brixen are missing.

The Steinplatte (by Waidring) isn't there. Near Kitzbühel you might add Jochberg and Pass Thurn.

In the Hochkönig area, Maria Alm and Mühlbach are worth pins.

Further west Alpbach and Reith im Alpbachtal could be added.

And then in the Zillertal, Hochfügen and Zell am Ziller.

But that's probably enough to be going on with! You may have a job for life here Very Happy
