Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Good hyper market between geneva and val thorens

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi Folks, hopefully a simple question for a change, can anyone recommend a good hypermarket between geneva and val thorens / les saisies ?. I'm off to val thorens on the 10th jan with a few mates and then following pam w 's recommendation in a previous post, a group of 12 of us are having a week in les saisies from the 14th of march. We are flying into geneva on both trips and then collecting hire cars, we'd like to find a hypermarket on the val trip that we can use again in march when with all the family, hoping that getting familiar with the place now will be time well spent and make the march trip with kids in tow much easier.

As always any info will be gratefully recieved, thanks Smile

jase380, I wouldn't use much of the same route from Geneva to Val Thorens as I would from Geneva to Les Saisies.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

jase380, the routes don't have much in common, really. But there's a big supermarket in Ferney-Voltaire, very near the airport, but in France. that might be the best bet if you want to do all the shopping in one place for both trips.

Where will you be staying in Les Saisies?

We're off to Val Tho on 14th and were aiming for Carrfour at Moutiers. Have used Carrefour Annecy before which was plenty big enough but wanted to try a bit closer to the destination. Anyone been to the Moutiers Carrefour - any good?

jase380, I tended to drop into the super U near albertville it's junc 29 if IIRC on the right hand side after the big 'electricity place on the left'- if you go past it then exit at the next exit and it's pretty obvious the route back to it (access road runs parallel to the main road). I preferred to the hypermarche everyone recommends in albertville as being a bit more compact it's easier to get in, get the stuff and get out again.

Not personally but I'm pretty sure it's where the guys from Ski Hame shop and there a great boutique chalet company in Meribel and La Tania, been doing it for a number of years and if it's good enough for them etc..

Thanks for the replies, I hadn't looked at routes yet ris, was hoping there may be a place convenient for both trips but maybe not. Will probably give the one near the airport a look then call at carrefour or the super u bertie bassett mentions if its not upto much, don't think we will need much for the march trip just beer and wine, 6 of our group are driving over in my mates lwb renault minibus so they'll take most of the stuff we need over for us. pam w, we are staying in the hameau du beaufontain apts. We all thought they looked nice and seem well located for the skiing, having 5 kids on the trip we wanted to be ski to door as its a lot less stress than trying to get em all organised and onto a shuttle bus !. gbium, i got my dates mixed up, we also go to val on the 14th and then les saisies on the 10th of march, may see you in val thorens !

We have shopped at Albertville on our trips to VT. The Géant Casino hypermarket is just off the main route.
As we drive from the UK, we've also used Albertville as a Friday night stop-over prior to a Saturday morning drive to Moutiers then up the hill to VT.
The Géant Casino is always well stocked, lots of fresh foods, bread, veg, pastries and has a petrol station. You are also not paying the 'up th hill' price premium of a ski resort. Let us know how you get on.

jase380, yes, the Hameau du Beaufortain is v well located for the skiing - but then most places in LS are. No need to get anybody onto buses anywhere, other than beginners in our area who wouldn't cope with an easy blue. The supermarket in Ferney Voltaire is enormous. slightly complicated to find - PM me if you want directions.

If you go via Annecy, there's a Super U, Lidl, Geant and Casino en route. There's also a Carrefour in VT itself, now, which seemed pretty reasonable.

There are a lot of supermarket choices, the Carrefour Market in Moutiers is the one we always use. It is closest to the 3V resorts, large, plenty of choice, good parking and a petrol station (on the opposite side of the road). It is usually full of brits and Chalet staff stocking up for the 3V resorts.
The Carrefour Montagne in both Les Menuires and Val Thorens are handy and well stocked but generally their prices are approx 20% above those at the bottom of the mountain. Useful for topping up though.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

There are also loads of supermarkets on the route from Geneva to Les Saisies (Annemasse, Sallanches, Megeve, Praz sur Arly) - but my suggestion of Ferney Voltaire is the only one which makes sense on both journeys for the OP.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Thanks all, i think we will head for carrefour or the geant on the way to vt, it will give us chance for a leg stretch, then probably find the one in fernay that you mention pam w on the way back to the airport as we will have plenty of time to kill. We should be able to familiarise ourselves with the place and make the march trip with kids in tow a bit easier..... hopefully !!
