Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thinking of booking this in March for just the two of us without the kiddies, any thoughts anyone...?

No idea what this is, but the name doesn't bode well. (For the avoidance of doubt, I'm allowed to make remarks like this, because I'm of 100% Russian parentage.) wink

Now there's an interesting debate/argument - a little while back (after a load of wine) i was debating / arguing with a colleague who i said was a "Soviet" rather than a Russian, due to his birth date and the birth dates of both his parents. Oh yes, and had a UK passport, so could not claim to be Russian on that basis either.
Can't remember the conclusion or whether we ever got to one.

yea its a good location. IMO a little stuffy and quite expensive but it keeps itself to itself down in La Daille. If you want a similar location but at a cheaper price then the hotel Toviere pretty much next door could be another option.

Totally off topic, but we seem to have acquired a Samovar from my mother-in-law. Anyone of Russian/Soviet parentage is welcome to take it off my hands. wink

I will be in val next jan. narrowed it down to the samovar, toviere or le kern in val proper. Samovar is 160hb,toviere 125hb and le kern is 175 b&b for a couple.

How ugly is la daille really? Toviere is being renovated this summer and 125 hb sounds pretty good for val!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.......... for a week i wouldn't mind staying in La Daille - in fact better in the Val d'Isere valley and enjoying the skiing that somewhere else 'pretty' and hating it.

The apartment blocks are quite ugly but how often are you going to be looking at them really!

I'd choose La Daille over Val d'Isere everytime as the lifts out - particularly the funicular - are great. They start early and have zero queues so you can be on the mountain well before anyone else, and either over to Tignes or beyond the other side of Val d'Isere in half an hour. It's only a short walk of bus ride to the night life in Val d'Isere if that's important to you.

These three options seem the best by far. Looks like the Toviere will be getting the business. Let’s just hope they finish the renovations in time.

This trip is actually my honeymoon so I’m really hoping these places are not that much of a dump.

I’m Australian, getting married in Ireland on 2nd January 2013. Then flying to Paris for 3 nights of good accommodation and romance, followed by a week at Val D'isere and then going to an amazingly good valued place in Lech that we both love.

I had always thought you go luxury on your honeymoon, but we can’t justify spending 3 times the amount each night! After all it’s the snow we are there for.

I organised a lads trip last year to Val , we stayed in Les Cretes Blanches . It was a 2 star , but much better than any other 2 star we have stayed in , the location was fantastic almost next door to Dicks T Bar , so easy walk for slopes and in the middle of everything , an easy stroll to all shops and restaurants . We paid about €160 b+B a night .
If you just want a very clean and comfortable hotel this is hard to beat , if you want luxury then try somewhere else .

Sorry I got my prices wrong , last year staying at Les Cretes Blanches in mid March was €198 per twin room so €100 per person per night ,

Yep we did go to The Samovar and was so worth the little extra. Beautiful room which looked across to the mountain, really friendly staff and we ate 4 out of 6 nights there. It was just so nice to come back after a dam hard day on the slopes to a very nice, cosy, french hotel. Yes it is in La Daille, but we could get the bus into Val every 10 mins if we wanted, but the beauty was just getting up in the morning over to the 2 man chair and up the mountain in no time. We are going back there again next season.
Very Happy

Thanks for the feeback Kiters! I think it either going to be La Toviere or Le Samovar.

We stayed in the Toviere but used to go to the Samovar bar in the evenings - a perfect match. FWIW the Samovar is, from a non-resident, exceptionally cosy and the staff are very friendly. The chef seems bonkers (but nice) and there's a rather mad (but not in a rabid way) dog that perhaps belongs to the owner. It's perfectly harmless and just good fun to watch. I can imagine it's a lovely place to stay, wallet permitting

La Toviere is being renovovated this summer and is €125 half board per night
Le Samovar is €160 half board per night

I consider them both reasonably priced considering its the French Alps. I am strongly leaning towards Toviere as it would save almost €500 for the week and we have someplace really nice in Paris before hand anyway.

What was the food like at Toviere?

... I have to say eating off the normal menu (NOT the set menu as I have heard (on here somewhere) that it can be VERY different) it was AWESOME..... very tasty! Enjoy going to La Toviere for a meal out.

Personally id lean towards La Toviere as it represents the best VFM I think!

Yes Steve the price does look good. Although im happy to pay more as looking forward to each and every meal makes a good ski week.

Stayed in a place in Zermatt a few years ago and the food was average at best which had an impact on how we remember the week.

As you are located in Val can you suggest any other places that are half board and good value?

Having stayed in La Toviere for a week this Easter I thought it was very good value IMHO. Let's not forget it's a very reasonable rate for the half board so it's a tad unfair to expect gourmet dining but there wasn't a meal I was dissatisfied with. There was a reasonable variety and enough to fill you up - 3 courses each day. The rooms were comfy with decent bathrooms and a balcony.

Just for your info and hopefully I'm not adding further confusion here, Les Crete Blanche in Val is similarly priced and I have also stayed there and would also recommend; if you stay for a week it offers two evenings of meals if I recall.

However the location in La Daille is excellent for quick access to the slopes

yep as dsoutar has also suggested the other place I would consider would be the crete blanche is right in the middle of town... otherwise La Tov winds hands down.
