Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Milan next week where would you go?

Flying to Milan on Tuesday morning for 4 days with my son(21). We both like between the pistes powder and are keen to get this best snow we can find, but dont have avi gear and a guide is not within the budget. Don't want to drive more than 2.5 hours or we will be wasting skiing time. Apres ski not important as I'll be too knackered.
These are some of our options:
Claviere with a day in Serre Chevalier-the best snow at the moment? but snow clearing tomorrow and may all be skied out by Tuesday.
Alagna/Gressoney - alot depends on the wind. Snow also clearing tomorrow. Finding good snow may be tricky without a guide and avi gear.
Madesimo - not so much snow now but forecast to continue till Tuesday. Small area that we haven't been to before but looks OK on paper. Could have a day in St Moritz which I know.
I'm finding it very had to make a decision- where would you go?

All the resorts you mention are on the cusp of your 2-2 1/2 hour driving limit from Milan and If you're intending to commute daily I would suggest you'll manage two days at most. It can be a bit of a drag getting up there and back. I would recommend that if you're prepared to rough it a bit, go to Alagna and stay at the campsite. They have some excellent wooden huts, fully heated and dirt cheap. Run by a Swiss/Dutch couple called Corine and Andy. The winds should die off towards next week and there are plenty of options to head off piste without straying too far. For Apres, then you must have a few beers and 'Aperitivo' at the Guides bar opposite the Church before heading back to the site. Forget St Moritz unless you lied about budget constraints and Madesimo is great for about 2 days max.

I'd still go for Alagna. It has some cheap B&B/Hostel accomodation and for refugio try http://www.grandehalte.it/en or http://www.rifugiogabiet.it/index_uk.htm at 45 Euros half board. The latter has more of a party atmosphere and gives you ski options even if the wind doesn't die down. Access from Gressoney to be safe.
