Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Today turned out much better than expected - had a mid-morning appointment with Jules in Sanglard to sort out some boots, and had thrown the rest of the kit in the car on the off-chance the morning clag/clouds cleared. A lunchtime coffee with Ross saw us eventually heading up to the Grands Montets for a look at 2pm. A couple of runs off Bochard in variable vis but with great powder were followed by a lavancher in good vis with still plenty of untracked. With the cloud clearing we snuck onto the last Bochard and headed over to the Poubelle which was super-well filled in at the top... 10m or so of side-stepping and you're in:

We had been gazumped by 3 people, but despite the couloir being quite narrow there was still knee+ deep pow to be had on every turn.

Ross getting in about it:

Kiwi Mel:

Below the Poubelle the snow was almost too deep!

The scenery is alright..

Bit of billy-goating in the exit couloir but no rap needed (yet)

Two happy campers:

A short wander up to the buvette and it was time for a pleasant slide down the James Bond run in the twilight (perfect berms on the hairpins at the moment!).

Happy days.

Yes, really nice.

So, I understand also that all pas du chevre couloirs are already in condition to ski, and the exit is OK!! Beautiful, next week I'll be there.

AlTom, there had been a BIG slide out of the main Pas de Chevre... A friend had skied the rectiligne a few days back and it was OK.
The RH Exit was OK, but wouldn't have taken many more skier passages to be quite tricksome. However it is now dumping low down again so should be refilling. Friends also skied the LH exit recently and it was alright.
*Disclaimer* the conditions may be very different when you are out - I make no guarantee it will be easy when you are there (though current conditions are favourable). Check with a friendly local 'sur place'.

Epic! Am I to take it that there is so much snow you didn't have to rap in? Entrance was a rocky cliff the one time I looked down it.

Also what was the avalanche risk when you skied it if you don't mind me asking?

8611, no rap needed strictly speaking, though we did throw down a handrail line for stability & time-efficiency as there are some rocks to step over at the top and we were all on 190+ skis which is a little snug between the rock walls on either side at the top... Have rarely seen it that well filled in up top as normally the couloir funnels wind which strips the snow out.

re Avalanche risk it was at 3 for the day however we discussed this at length before dropping in - our big concern was the first dogleg which could have had wind-loading on the pocket above the corner. It is the only section of the couloir which is threatened from above, the rest is (and was) a case of good (and fun) sluff-management. Below the couloir the slopes are generally much gentler (the run out from the avalanches out of the main Pas de Chevre had slowed/stopped here) apart from some moraine ridge side-slopes until you get to the exits. Also the wind had been West-ish so the slopes were generally windward slopes for the last snowy episodes.

**Disclaimer (again)** Just because we skied it doesn't mean it will be safe any other day at risk 3. We made our decisions based on our experience (Ross & Mel both have steep ski tick-lists that most people would envy) and the conditions at hand. There is no guarantee conditions will be the same now or later in the season. The exits in particular are well-known for catching rope-less people out...
