Someone needs to set up an Après-Ski Level Guide.

You know it makes sense.

Question: Is it possible to be an 11 onpiste, and a 10 offpiste - Would i then be a 10? I am not perfectly happy with all conditions offpiste (very heavy snow), but ski anything onpiste fast and with good technique.

@DanishRider, The general skiing level and off piste guidelines are meant to be separate but complimentary.

@skimottaret, I was just thinking that the references to off-piste could perhaps be omitted from the other guidelines now. I have been having coaching (!) thanks to which my piste skiing has gradually been improving through your levels. However, I have now - regretfully - decided no longer to try and get myself properly off-piste, my fitness isn't and now never will be adequate, so the references to off-piste are irrelevant to me. But I don't feel strongly about this, it's just a thought.

@DanishRider, 11 on piste is very very decent, what qualifications do you have?? Have you done any IASI training??

@DanishRider, I'd want to be at least an 11 with that amount of on snow time!

Surely you have at least that amount of snow time ( minus the lunches of course )

But to be fair - the question was if it was possible - NOT a claim of me being a Pro

@Dave of the Marmottes, I should have said, "if I were you", perhaps... it may not have read quite as I expected.
I have no idea, nor do i care what level I am... *
* For baser elements of my psyche, this may not strictly be true...
As for on snow time, I think I am probably at around 1,500 on-snow days by now (did not count artificial slope days of which I could guess at about 200) ? as you say though, some of them may have included more lunching than others... as a counter, I reckon a season with 5-6 days a week, all day on skis, amplifies the benefits of those days as you're intensifying the practice.

Seasons definitely move you on. Rest is about managing decline....

@Dave of the Marmottes, on which, 6 individual weeks are good, 3 x 2 weeks are better, etc. Or, just pop out whenever the snow or weather look good out the window?
Having spent the last 5 years working myself into an early grave for precious little reward, I am looking forwards to a season where I don't actually have a day job and I intend to do exactly that ... he he he ... with skating if it's grey and dry...
Actually that's another point, my skiing was better maintained once I started blading 2 or 3 times a week - simiar dynamic balance.

Just a fun aside, one of the skiers in the L11 expert video changed sports and was on the tele in the the recent Cycling world championships. We emphasised multi sport training and after a bad injury used cycling to rehab and she found her true sporting love. Well done Anna !

Not that it is important to most people but the Level 12 Athletes & Instructor Trainers is really too narrow. It leaves out talented amateurs. I have never been a full time professional though in 1980 I was a part time instructor. I don't ski that much, between 10 and 50 days a year, but I've been doing that for more for 40 years. I'm good enough to do have done dye crew on multiple world cup races. Essentially, where do you want an amateur who is good enough to ski with the pro's to put himself? An expert is a very good skier but someone who skis "competently everywhere on the mountain" is not necessarily at the same level as a "talented amateur" who volunteers to do professional level work (even if I might be the slowest of the group). I've started to use the term "professional level skier" as it communicates how I ski faster than "expert skier" does to non-professionals/experts. Plus, it starts a conversation with high level experts or pro's where you can find out whether you want to ski together.

I'd leave out the "confidently" in the Inside Out Skiing’s guide to off piste skiing level 10 "confidently negotiate any conditions they may encounter including breakable crust". You cannot confidently ski breakable crust and should not try to ski it unless it is the only way down. Try to ski it "safely" but follow monty python's advice and "run away" if you can.

@Lotus skier, hmmm, I see your points, had a perfectly vile day heli skiing (vile? Heli-skiing? How?) on breakable crust/crud above cervinia about 10 years ago. Perfectly vile. But no alternative. Great lunch though.
I have also skied with some very good "amateurs" who would easily be good enough to be high grade instructors, for instance. I have also skied with one (retired, although I did see a recent image last season) "ski model" and frankly, he just puts almost anyone else on the mountain in the shade. It's an extraordinary difference....

I thought the levels are to be used for grouping lessons, is it not?
So what difference does it make to classify "expert amateurs" accurately or not? Would they be taking lessons? Would the professionals take lessons from Inside Out?
