Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Time for my dim question of the day haha

Hello Very Happy Only me again lol

Just in the process of booking a holiday for January and would like to know if you can book ski guides for less than what lessons cost?

I only ask because I hate skiing on my own Sad . I'm going on holiday with a beginner who will be in ski school the majority of the time!! I went on my first two skiing holidays last year, the first holiday the owner of the chalet skiied with me daily and on the second I went with someone who could also ski.

My big worry is going and being on my own all day and I don't want to leave it to chance that I will meet someone to ski with? Sad .

Millie10, Is there any ski-guiding offered with the holiday you are interested in? The big TOs usually offer at least a couple of days' escorted small-group skiing to introduce guests to a resort. This would give you a chance to team up with people who like to ski the way you do.

Hi Chris.

Inghams are the only one's I've seen offer it. They offer a one day "meet the piste service" at certain resorts only but not on a deal I want Sad

Hi Millie10

Not dim at all! I think you'll find that most operators have some sort of piste leading program double check to be sure and book into a large catered chalet to maximise your chances of finding a likely crowd to ski with. look around see who is at your chalet and see if any familiar faces are skiing about your pace in the leading.

Just for info there are strict rules on what the leading is described as only guides can guide and instructors instruct.

See how piste leading goes on 1st day and if a bit out of your depth sure you could always hook up with a group lesson which in turn would introduce you to another group you could hook up with out of lesson time. (rep would definitely arrange this if you wanted)

Hope you stay hooked.

Jesus Christ! If I could be paid a month's wage a day to ski and then nail some desperate tart at the end I'd be first in the queue! I always find it confusing, why do they bother with the pseudo-legal crap? She's being paid to stay with you, but anything else blah blah. Why not be honest and just call it Sluts On Skis? Up the gary: 50 Euro. On a lift: 10 Euro surcharge.

And you have to pay for accom, food etc! Someone is really coining it. They should run a scheme like it in Scotland. "Companionship fee": £5. Morag likes fights, kebabs and the dole. Favourite scent: McDonalds.

Ski Cub of GB has leaders in most resorts who you can ski with free. Look on their website here and look under Ski Resorts. Resort details will tell you who the leader is and where you meet. Usually different days are intended to be different standards, but often the same people keep on turning up. Or in some of the biggest resorts they sometimes have 2 leaders so 2 standards. You can ski without joining for one day but then have to join if you want to carry on.

TO leaders cannot guide off piste but SCGB leaders do some off piste guiding.

Proper High Mountain Guides guide off piste and cost as much as ski teachers.

Millie10, fear not - there are lots of ways you can find ski buddies

a. ski with people in your chalet (assuming you are looking at a chalet holiday) - it has worked for me on a number of occasions
b. book one or two group lessons directly with a local English speaking ski school (ESF tend to be more rigid on booking the week long courses only) and you can then ski with people from those lessons for the rest of the week and be sure they are of a similar standard
c. consider a UCPA trip - your friend will get tuition and their skiing will improve - you will get to ski with a group of your own standard with an instructor which will improve your technique too for either 2.4 or 4.5 days (half or full time - depending on what you book)

Have a look at the other threads about UCPA here on Snowheads and see if it is for you.... it isn't everyone's cup of tea to be honest. I would recommend Flaine or La Plagne for beginners and early intermediates, although to be honest, beginners can learn pretty much anywhere so go for a resort that you fancy for night-life or bigger ski area etc.

Sounds to me like you would benefit hugely from lessons yourself. 2 ski hold does not a skier make. For my money ski school is the best bit of the hol get to see all sorts and ski bits you'd never normally ski

Another vote for ski school. Obviously there is a cost compared to just finding a buddie or going with a TO guide but think of it as an investment in your skiing. You will still have some time to spend with your friend - by the end of the week they should be able to get around quite a bit of the mountain with you. Plus you will probably make new friends (who will be at the same level as you) in ski school to ski with in your free time.

Millie10, i went skiing on my own in March 2009. I made sure i was in a chalet so i would meet other people. As long as you meet people in the chalet then im sure they wouldnt mind you skiing with them. One thing ive always found is that no matter your ability, people are always happy for you to ski with them if your on your own.

I stayed in a hotel in Andorra, and it was full of old Russian men, with these Ski Bunny types. It was hilarious to see. My GF at the time couldn't believe it.

I'm sure a male version would take off big time. And at those rates...some ( not myself ) would love doing it.

I know a few lads...that will pull anything on a weekend. To get paid for skiing, eating, drinking and socialising...then they may as well do this. They seem to have no morals...So... rolling eyes

Hi Millie, perhaps there are likely to be some other snow heads at whatever resort you're planning on heading to? Once you have more details, drop the details on here Wink

Otherwise, +1 for the group lessons Wink

I have a friend who was travelling the States, a non skier, who ended up doing bar work in Aspen.

To cut a long story short...A Wealthy 'Cougar' (32) took a liking to him, and took him home for six months. Needless to say...she found a new 'toy', chucked him out...and he also got thrown out of the States for overstaying his welcome Visa wise. He's no longer allowed back their.

He's good entertainment with stories to tell over a few beers though. Laughing

I would agree, if not staying in a chalet or where you are involved with a group etc probably best way to meet people.

Millie10, You may want to look at this www.simonbutlerskiing.com/ . They are a TO that runs half day group lessons for all the guests in the chalet hotel - split into similar ability groups.

Very likely useful if you happen to be in one of their resorts, but 34 resorts is hardly "most" of them.

Millie10, Whenever I've traveled solo, I've never had to ski alone unless I wanted to. I've used either the tour operator or SCUK ski-leading and then always met someone in a similar position when doing that, to ski with on the days it wasn't available or skied with other guests from the chalet/hotel. I've not been with a TO yet that didn't offer some level of ski leading.

Thank you for all the replies. Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back on here but I have limited internet access at the moment (living in hospital staff accomodation!)

I definatly don't think I'm too good for lessons and was planning on booking a private lesson on the first day to give me something to work on for the rest of the week. I had group lessons the first time I went and then just a one off private the second holiday and found this much for beneficial!

Hoping to get something booked by Tuesday so will let you know where once we have chosen. It's looking like Austria now. Any resorts there to avoid?

Millie10, One which I would avoid, is in all the big TO brochures but which I wouldn't describe as a ski resort at all is St Wolfgang. A half hour bus ride to a small ski area, or 50 minutes to a slightly bigger but still small one.
