Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hard to follow news like that - just back from Tignes after a week on SCGB Freshtracks - didn't manage to catch up with Steve, but met a very nice chap from TDC (Gavin) who was our guide for 3 days - can certainly recommend them if you're in the area.
Snow conditions were interesting - we had 6 days of sunshine, so spent most of the time followign the sun around and trying to get the 'spring snow' at the best time - although there were (as of Wednesday last week, at least), easily accessible off-piste powder stashes.... although we did do a LOT of traversing to get to them.
I've now got some nice new routes on my piste map, and a decent tan.

Some of the 'in resort' runs were proving quite challenging, as they turned to mixes of ice and 'clumps' of snow - as the accident above highlights. Trolles in Tignes was also nasty, and more easily navigated by taking routes either side.

A good week all in all - roll on Andermatt at Easter - and Steve, keep up the great blog!

^ I found Trolles got very heavily mogulled this time last year because EVERYONE was using it to ski back, whether they had the ability or not. Giant slushy bumps and ice. Nice.

The skier death is in all the papers today. He worked for Crystal, and did hit a snow cannon as Steve said. Very sad.

Glad you had fun. Gavin is a good lad ehh. Saw one of your members injured in the Familial with the dislocated shoulder on the first day! You will also have come across Chris who posts on here from time to time who was on the FreshTracks trip too. I have taught him a fair bit over the years... sounds like he had fun.

I shall keep up the blog for sure - thanks.

Piccadilly - it is indeed sad and lots in the papers and on the internet about it. I posted about it in the 'skier dies in Val d'Isere' thread that sprung up yesterday.

Where was everyone today...

Shock horror when I woke up I remembered I had no cereal for breakfast... there was nothing for it but to head to Chevallot and treat myself to a couple of yummy Pain au Chocolats... what a treat.... my expanding waistline enjoyed it!

It was another sunny and lovely day in the mountains (expected all the way through until... well the foreseeable future really) and the wind was somewhat calmer than it was yesterday.

Jason and Sally rode really well and the Fontaine Froide red run was in tip top condition at about 10am when it had softened up a little - what a confidence builder for them. We then spent the rest of the session on the Grand Pre working on carving the board... Jason is learning how to let the board run a little as he is over hesitant at whacking the brakes on. Anyway they both had a good morning.... I have promised I will teach them some freestyle on the board on Friday which they are looking forward to.

Where was everyone today... until about 11am the whole resort was totally empty! Weird

The magic carpet takes the strain to get us back up to the top of the Olympic.

The afternoon was fairly quiet back home and I have to say that after all that snow early on in the season it is nice that I am able to get to and from my front door very easily now as all the snow has been cleared and then the last but has melted away over the last few weeks.

We are gearing up for the start of private school holidays here in town next week and the forward bookings suggest that it will be busy for three weeks on the trot. That will take us through to the middle of April when things will calm down for the last couple of weeks of the season!

I have not experienced it myself but one of my colleagues who is running an off piste course this week tells me that he found some sheltered areas off the back of Col Pers today where there was well over a foot of fresh powder... the weather that has been hanging over the Fornet area the last few days has been steadily dropping snow whilst most of the rest of the Espace Killy has been bathed in sunshine! You would never have guessed!

Our day in Val d'Isere!!

Today we left early and went to Val d'Isere. The weather was good with the sun pushing through although at times the high clouds did make it feel a little cold with the wind blowing. The snow was holding up well in all the places we went. Either powder, soft snow, chalky snow or spring snow. Managed to be on almost the first cable car up when it opened from Fornet. What a great day. Toofy Grin

Here are the seven routes we managed to complete. Quite a long day, but well worth the effort. Twisted Evil

Route One, Col Pers. By taking a different route to those just setting off from the Col we managed to have first tracks the whole way down the Col Pers from the top of the Col to the river valley and then first through the river valley and back to the Fornet Cable car. Very nice! Toofy Grin

Route Two, Cugnai. Although well tracked the snow was soft and fun to ski. We managed to find a little fresh snow under the cliffs and in the side valley. Smile

Route Three. Les Marmottes. From the skiers left of the Solaise down through the cliffs and large snow fields and then into Val d'Isere. Spring snow conditions and not to soft yet. There were a number of large avalanche fields to avoid, but otherwise a very good ski. Smile

Route Four, The Tour de Charvet. Always worth a ski. From the easy entrance at the top of the Grand Pre chair we went over the back and around some large avalanches on more spring snow to reach the river valley and then down the river and back to the Manchet Chair. Smile

Route Five, Le Grand Vallon. Another route I enjoy. All the way from the top of the Signal tow down to the valley and across to the Fornet Cable car. Although well tracked the snow in the top half was soft and easy to ski. Lower down it became more spring like, but till good fun. The gullies are well worth the effort. Smile

Route Six, The shoulder of the Petit Signal. From the top of the Signal tow again, this time going left and along the ridge and then down through the cliffs to return to the Pyramides chair. Good soft snow sometimes untracked at the top. Then spring snow as we went lower, but always good to ride. Madeye-Smiley

Route Seven, Les Vallonnets. What a great way to finish a good day on the mountain. By getting the Signal tow again, we traversed to the east and then over the small cornice and through the various small depressions and snow fields to reach the bridge at the exit of the Col Pers route down in the valley floor and back to the Fornet cable car. Even quite late in the day the snow here was in good condition and it was possible to still find some untracked patches. Very Happy

A long day, but great fun and next time we will try to complete as many routes as we can in a day on the Tignes side. Twisted Evil

Pics of all the routes will be posted in the March 2012 Album Two of my Les Arcs Winter facebook page as soon as I have time. Enjoy!!

I love skiing big slushy bumps... Great fun.

Tony Ellwood - hmm. In the depths of Winter it can get a little slippy sometimes but generally when you go up it you really need to concentrate on keep the skis really flat and your weight very centred... it tends to make people lean way too far forward and the skis lose grip so I always tell people to stand tall and it feels like you are leaning back on that carpet and that usually does the trick. On a day like today there should have been no problems with the carpet being sliddy or anything.

As for slushy bumps red 27 lots of people love slushy bumps. At this time of the year everything turns into big slushy bumps on any slopes that get any sun on them with enough traffic (some more than others) by the end of the day. If that piste gets enough traffic then they will bash it every night so the bumps are a result of that days traffic. Runs like the Epaule de Charvet are not bashed that often therefore each morning the bumps are solid then as the day wears on they soften up and get bigger and bigger.

Soft and slushy bumps for the most part are better than solid and icy bumps I think you would agree! No?

STAY NORTH when its hot folks - the snow will stay nice for much longer!..... unless you are up early in which case hit runs like Fontaine Froid at about 10am after a short period of time of melting in the sun but before it turns into a waterslide!

... I suppose not. But that is in terms of lessons and next week looks like being busy only / mainly because of the private school holidays. (I know there are some school off but the vast majority aren't I don't think). Either way the lift systems is pretty darn good here therefore doubt you will notice to much of a issue in the lift lines or on the slopes themselves.... so fear not. Getting slushy early in the day now as the melt freeze cycle digs in hard.

Another sunny and pretty warm day but the wind dropped off a little which was nice.

The problem is that as the snow transform more and more it is firm underfoot for the first hour or two and then gets really soft after lunch. The warm weather is supposed to carry on. Even a little cloud cover would cool things down a little and help maintain the snow quality. Having said that I am not worried about the snow 'all melting' or anything like that and we will have plenty of cover through to May... even if up on the glacier will be the best place to go!

What do you think? The following photo is of the guy I taught this morning (no lessons this afternoon). We are on the Face de Bellevarde here. What level do you think he described himself at, at the beginning of the lesson? What terrain do you think would be his comfort zone in terms of terrain to work on his technique... green, blues, reds?

Back on the board tomorrow and then Saturday it will be back to the normal Geneva run as we have run out of self driving guests - ho hum!

... don't put yourself down so much Chris Ski H. (It was not fear BTW).

But everything else you have said... bingo. In fact I did tip turns with him on reds and blues amongst other things. He described himself as pretty advanced but it was more of a case of getting down as opposed to skiing it properly on the tougher runs. His 'red run technique' was reasonable but to really improve he needed to spend hours on blue runs but that was never gonna happen... comes back to what I was saying yesterday here 'what they need or what they want'. In this case he wanted to ski reds and blacks as that was where he thought his challenge and skill level lay but there was little point in doing that as there were too many errors in his skiing all at once if that was to happen but you have to balance it up in a lesson don't you! In all fairness he made pretty good progress and the Face at the end of the session was just the end of session 'challenge.'

We did talk about the necessity to work on easier terrain in the session as a means to improve at the higher end.. if anyone is wondering why I am publicly talking about my client so none of this should be of a surprise if he ever read this.

Steve Angus, shoogly, you're sick wink give me slick hardpack anytime... That's the beauty of Spring skiing - you get all conditions, every day

I had a HUGE fright at the bottom of Epaule de Doodah - €38 for the plat du jour at that restaurant you come to at the bottom. Shocked

Loved the skiing in VD... My fave combo was 'M', Rhone Alpes & Combe Martin from Solaise back to town.

You do see some sights in EK - one 'dude' (possibly Whitegold but I can't be sure), dressed in full Park Rat clone-zone stylee of dressing-gown length ski coat comedy hat and iridium googles, came straight off Tommasuesses (sp) chair, down the short red that runs along the ridge and then hung a left straight down the red that runs along by the drag (Combe Allone??) and headed off at high speed towards Trolles carving long GS turns - and all of this backwards on his too-kool-4-skool twintips. He was also 'sick'

So much easy off piste - although all skied out natch. I got completely lost in the Vallee Perdue and had a big moment on the Grand Motte.

Tignes Lac is more ugly than anywhere else I've been but as it's sort of dumped there in that bland valley it doesn't seem to matter too much.

Great food on the mountain - only the place on the glacier was a bit average

Having been an EK virgin I am now well and truly a devotee and I think a few days there every year will be essential

A nice little bit of apres after another fun day on the slopes.

Im not going to bother talking about the weather anymore as it is the same everyday at the moment - sunny and warm.

South and west facing slopes are stripped bare of snow now as we head into late March...

Jason and Sal had fun on the board today learning some basic freestyle tricks... 360 spins on the ground (clock and anti-clockwise), Ollies and then 180 jumps (frontside off the heel) in regular and then switch! I think Jason was particularly amazed at the progress he made in such a short period of time!

We took a nice trip over to Tignes and of course all signs of the X-Games have now disappeared...

...and it was pretty quiet (the quiet before the storm) on the slopes.

The afternoon was spent having a nice long bath and then heading out for some apres with colleagues. Its not often (what with family and other commitments etc) that we all manage to grab a beer together.

Just polished off a nice pizza between the two of us... will be taking an early night as its back on the road again tomorrow.!!!!!

Hopefully I will be back at a sensible time tomorrow in order to post my report but the pick up is pretty late therefore not sure... we shall see.

Until then....

A pleasant (really am I saying that word in relation to....) transfer day...

As I thought by the time I got back into town last night, put the car away and had dinner it was late so thought id write my report this morning.

It was lovely morning as I left town and I couldn't help but wonder how quiet it would have been on the slopes yesterday!

The trip to the airport was fairly nice (and warm)... I took all the back roads as even in Bourg it was pretty busy as I was leaving a little later than normal.

Some beautiful scenery along the back routes between Bourg and Moutiers.

Despite being overly keen to take even more short cuts (an extra one that I thought existed) and ending up in a dead-end, it was fairly painless day on the road.

I arrived at Geneva to collect Clares mother and assorted other relatives and then we hit the road home.

After a stop in Bourg it was dark by the time we got into Val...

... and that was about all I have to report on yesterday - quite boring really - sorry!

Today should be a lot more exciting... watch this space.

Piccadilly hope you made it OK.

What a fun day that was...

I had a really great day yesterday... the video uploaded below took me a while to edit last night hence not posting (again) until this morning (sorry).

Chalet Nanouk - one of my favourite looking chalets in Val d'Isere - still looking pretty wintery!

I took 9 year old Robin (Clares neice) out for a free lesson in the morning (she is part of Clares family that are staying in our chalet this week). She had only ever done 1 hour in her whole life before yesterday. She is a sporty little girl and dead keen and after Clare had skied with her a little bit in the afternoon too she was comfortably coming from the top of the Village lift on the steep part. There are some adults that I have taught in my life that have taken 2 or perhaps more weeks of lessons in order to get to that level. She did very very well and loved every second of it. We could not get her off the hill at the end of the day but we sensed she was tired.

She is booked (TDC do not do kids group lessons) into kids group lessons with Oxygene this week so we are sure she will do very well.

The afternoon was great fun. As TDC coaches (half of us on our day off hence not all in uniform) several of us had a 'practice our freestyle and share some drills and tips' session. So Joe, Lena, Giles, Ben and I hit the park and worked on (amongst other things) some airborne rotations, a drill for learning rail / box slides, some new types of grabs etc etc.... it was a great session (thanks Joe for leading - he is our main freestyle specialist). Yours truly was i/c the videoing as we edit (ill do it this afternoon perhaps) some of the footage together to make some official TDC Online Tips etc, so I only appear a couple of times - but you can't have it every way.

http://youtube.com/v/NB76NCK-jx4

Went around to the chalet to have Spag Bol in the evening with Clares family which was really nice and then had an early night after editing the video.

Hopefully back on track with the daily reports from this afternoon.

Not a normal Monday morning...

Apologies as once again I seem to be writing this the night after I should have been.... got involved in editing yet another video and going out for dinner with Clares family and before I knew it is was time for bed. Anyway today fingers crossed I will be back on track I promise.

I took a young couple from London out for a lower intermediate lesson in the morning... they were only on their second day of skiing but they both did very well (friends had taken her 'up' the mountain yesterday and scared her half to death so had to remedy confidence pretty quickly) and I managed to get them both up the Solaise by the end of the session and onto the Lac chairlift - well done folks.

Although it is now school holidays it was not too busy on the slopes or in the lift queues yesterday which was good to see. The little ones here with Oxygene ski school about to line up to load the Village lift one by one!

The snow is still in great shape even though it does get somewhat soft later in the day (by mid morning on south facing slopes). The snow is holding up well all the way into town and I still can't foresee any problems snow cover wise all the way until the end of the season at the start of May!

I met up with Clares family for a nice picnic on the piste in the baking hot sun and then we had a family ski altogether - I took the opportunity to put together a little video of young Robin (here following Clare down the slopes) - this is only her 3rd day ever of skiing and is now coming down the Madeleine Express green run at the top of Solaise pretty confidently as you can see.

http://youtube.com/v/kdXKu3Fs-q4&feature=results_video&lr=1&ob=0

After all that excitement we headed to the market...

...before grabbing a few yummy pizzas to share around and having a few beers and hitting the sack (after editing this video).

BTW Robin was a pretty dab hand at both babyfoot and pool in Blue Note at apres time too - she kicked all our *&^%$ (even if a little cheating went on!).

Getting ready for a trip home...

Had a pretty chilled day with a couple of ladies who are parents of season workers.... we pottered around blues and a red and the few tips I gave them they got stuck into implementing and really loved the knew feelings they were getting. They wanted 'something' they could take back to their kids with that would 'impress' them... so after a little bit of persuasion they were skiing backwards (and they loved it)... in fact Linda would still be going backwards if she had the chance!

I spent the afternoon clearing out some emails and packing my bag as I am back to the UK tomorrow for 48 hours as it is my fathers 90th birthday on Thursday... so there will be no report tomorrow or Thursday!

I forgot to say that there are loads hundreds of students in town this week for an international European student event so there are literally hundreds of them drinking and partying around the clock... the slopes are quite quiet though.

Anyway not much else to report from Val d'Isere today... seems the way at the moment.

Just finished a week skiing in Espace Killy, and now relaxing with a pint and Wifi connection in Scottys Bar in Le Lavachet.

What a week it has been. Blisteringly hot lower down all week which has meant going higher up in the afternoon such as the glacier and Double M in Tignes and the glacier in Val D'Isere which are all holding out well until late in the day. Trolles back into Tignes is the best return piste into town at the end of the day as it doesn't get the sun until late. Some of the main motorway pistes have been a nightmare later in the day such as Plan M in Val, Piste H in Tignes and Carline in Tignes, all of which are full of mogully slush by mid afternoon.

Lower runs early in the morning such as down to Les Brevieres have been surprisingly good, icy of course early doors which is when we have tended to do them. The Face in Val is in good shape mid mornings but looks slushy later on.

The Bollin/Fresse chairlift in Tignes has had a few mechanical problems this week, closed for periods both Wednesday and Thursday for at least an hour. We sat and watched it moving about 50 metres at a time from the cafe near the Lanches chair and decided to change our route rather than risk getting stuck on it. Might be one to avoid unless things improve.

All in all, surprisingly good snow for the time of year (we usually go earlier) and it is all holding up well despite the scorching weather. The pisteurs are working wonders overnight.

Great holiday, sorry to be going back home tomorrow. If you are coming out in the next few weeks, there is still plenty of snow to enjoy, but stay high if you can in the afternoon.

I posted this on the Resort Reviews and Trip reports section:
I heard this when in Tignes recently. The main Aeroski gondola from Tignes le Lac (2100) is becoming less reliable now it's over 25 years old. Apparently there's a possibility it will be taken out and replaced with a chairlift.
Any other Snowheads know anything about this? It would be a retrograde step to have a chairlift I think. It could do with a new jumbo gondola, similar to the Olympique from Val D'Isere.

Back in the driving seat...

Im back - seems like only a couple of minutes since my last post but in fact it has been several days...

Firstly, yes, the death was very sad. It was on the lower skiers right of the East Face of the Charvet apparently... but apart from that I do not know any of the details... I am sure others know more so ill hunt through the threads elsewhere on here.

Secondly intermediate the Aeroski is unreliable for sure and does break down from time to time.... if its not breaking down then it is often badly wind affected. The town plan is for the Paquis Chair which is the chair that runs half way up the mountain on that side AND the Aeroski to both be pulled out and a new lift (type of lift not really sure about could possibly be a large 8/10 seater chairlift) installed.... the negotiations have been ongoing for a long time and I am not sure exactly whereabouts they stand. However im not sure whether a large chair is a step backwards or not if the upload capacity is greater (and many people prefer not to have to take skis off every time they want to mount a lift).

Anyway I got back late last night and headed straight out for a family dinner with Clares family so it was all systems go. I had a lovely time back at home for the two days and ate far to much food - really must get back on that diet as there was a lot of birthday cake to be eaten!

Today was transfer day and I had to leave town at 5.30 this am therefore it has been another long and tiring day to and from Geneva but it was glorious day (not the best to spend in a car but thats the way it goes sometimes).

I had a frustrating sessions trying to fix my car headlights as I was told that one of the headlights had blown.... after much fafffing around I got the bulb out and noticed that it looked totally fine... so I played with the connected and found out that it was that that was dodgy.... grrr. I put the bulb back in its slot and in doing so managed to drop it inside the lower engine compartment which then took me a further 30 mins trying to dig it back out.... anyway I got there in the end and its all sorted now.

After I had greeted our new guests I took the following photo and realised that it was exactly 3 months previously that I had taken the same photo (below it) but the conditions then we somewhat snowier (and less sunny) - although the road was more passable!

Back to normal teaching tomorrow therefore should be on normal report writing duties too!

intermediate, it is certainly becoming less reliable - broke down a number of times for up to an hour or so each time when I was there a couple of weeks ago.

Totally agree with that. I defo prefer chairs if the uplift is about the same. It's a real pain taking skis off and seems to break up the flow of the day. I'm pretty sure a lot of colds and flu about spread like wild fire when your all packed in like sardines. I allways seem to have someone pressed up against me coughing and spluttering and unfortunately they never look like Carmen Electra.
