Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Speaking as a much worse skier than Steve, we were in Val last week and the Face was considerably easier than Rhone Alpes, which was very hard (and slippery) towards the bottom. I ended up side-slipping a small section of the latter, which wasn't needed on Face.

Satisfying, yummy and interesting...

What a great day in the mountains. The sun shone and it was hot.

I had a really lovely middle aged lady in the morning who was not only very easy to teach but was a good laugh... I totally lost track of time and went well over the allotted time for the lesson. She was confident on blues but the reds were not her thing. It became apparent very quickly that choice of terrain would be the most thing in the lesson so we headed towards the Val glacier and it was glorious... the moraine red run really is a great run.

In the second lesson tomorrow I shall be working on flexion and extension and lateral separation to help improve control at the end of the turns. Im hoping we shall have more smiles and breakthroughs tomorrow.

I was more than a little hungry at lunchtime by the time I got to Le Chalet so I got stuck into this 'cardiac arrest on a plate' (aka a Tarte Beaufort):

...had a lovely salad with it too!

After lunch I headed back up the Solaise as I was booked onto the weekly Pisteurs chat - the so called 'behind the scenes tour.' It is one of those things you should do from time to time - see a totally different way of life in resort.

Amongst other things we studied the avalanche 'danger' map... aka a map of possible places where slides could take place and the extent to which a slide could move...

The trip into the CATEX cabin where they control the winched explosives along to their allocated drop points was fascinating...

I got back home about 2 hours ago and in that time I received a call saying that hopefully (fingers crossed) I will be the other half of the TDC team going to down to Bonneval on Friday and heli-lifting it back to Val d'Isere in the afternoon.... fingers crossed that comes off - very exciting.

Talking of helicopters, Chris Ski H from this forum and posts from time to time on this thread texted me this afternoon to say that when he was off-piste this morning (he is on a week long off piste course with a colleague of mine) in the Grand Vallon they witnessed a dramatic helicopter rescue of an injured skier... he is hoping to either email me the footage and I can upload or he will post it himself... could be interesting viewing.

The X-Games have started...

Another sunny day in the EK (groundhog day all over again). I had Nicky again this morning and we had another fun session up on the glacier... she really came on a lot today and it is great to see her enjoying it. She now has an action plan of things to get her teeth stuck into to make practice permanent.

I was a little more restrained at lunch today food wise but the chat was all about tying to sort out the logistics of a boneval heli trip as there seems to be LOADS of people wanting to do it. Phil my colleague has been trying to lease between the various people who want to do the drop, instructors to guide the trip (and our varying levels of availability (and those of us who are (or are not) signed up to work with SAF choppers)) and of course SAF heli company themselves. Anyway my allotted trip was going to be on Friday (late last night it was then), then this afternoon it moved to tomorrow and then we found out that SAF are fully booked tomorrow for the maximum of 5 Bonneval pick ups.... so as it stands at the moment Saturday will be the day... watch this space.

Talking of choppers, this is the video that Chris Ski H managed to get from the off piste rescue yesterday (I have edited it on his behalf) - thanks for submitting Chris.

http://youtube.com/v/iTpm0rWvUX8

After lunch I headed over to watch the X Games in Tignes.

There were LOADS of people (more than it looks like in this picture) watching the womens slopestyle final.

Val Claret was pretty hectic...

The tricks were awesome and the kickers MASSIVE... a great spectacle.

Congratulations to Woodsy for making it through to the Mens Final in the slopestyle - good luck to him.

Finally a question for everyone... what is it the makes people fall over then they ski (or snowboard)? There is only really one answer - they lose balance... why?. In general the reason is virtually ALWAYS the same and it all comes down to what is learnt (or not) in those first few lessons.... balancing on / finding the middle of the ski... and learning how to stay on it. Virtually every single person I saw ski / snowboard past me (member of the public that is) as I was watching the X-Games this afternoon was either not in the middle of their skis or not able to maintain it... quite incredible. Just goes to show that the BASICS are really what makes or breaks a ski or snowboard performance.

... I do like that quote in general but people seem to equate falling over with lack of ability. Finding the middle of the ski makes things so much easier.

Chris Ski H - in your case - as we have discussed (and you have been told this week) your technique is very strong - mileage and getting yourself into new situations such as the Spring snow you have found this week is one of the best ways you will improve. However doing things like ski with boots undone makes you find the middle of your skis as well as moguls!!!!!

One particular drill people can do to find the middle of their ski - or see whether they are in the middle of the ski is a drill called braquage... essentially link side-slips with 180 rotations of the feet (i.e. turn one way and then next). The skill lies in whether the feet move straight down the fall line or whether they (and the skier / skis) drift across the slope. The skis must be kept flat as possible too. You can pole plant if you like. The more 'plum' the feet move down the slope the more the skier is balanced over the middle of the ski on that slope.... the steeper the slope the harder. Some momentum is allowed but it is harder (and more skilful) at slow speed where friction is greater. Even tougher - try and do it down moguls (have to be well spaced and rounded moguls!). There are lots of other ways of seeing whether someone is centred or not... but i'd be doing myself out of a job if I gave all the answers here - haa haa

4th - nearly but not quite.

Woodsy did well but not quite good enough for a medal in the Mens Slopestyle this afternoon... 4th. Good on you son.

It was another lovely sunny day but they are forecasting some snow to come in over the weekend and into next week (fingers crossed)...

Only had one lesson today... 4 nice Irish people from Dublin. They had only skied a little so it was lower intermediate lesson but boy did they improve loads in 3 hours. However with people at that level they don't yet appreciate how much they still have to learn therefore sometimes people expect a bit of a miracle in 3 hours. Anyway technically they came on in leaps and bounds in those three hours.

As I was sitting on the bus this afternoon (nice reflection of my Whitedots in the window by the way I thought) we pulled in opposite the UCPA building. Thinking back to the horrors that happened here in 1970 and seeing that big concrete wall makes you think of the powers of nature and the lengths humans will go to to tame mother nature!

Bit of cafe culture in Snow Square in the afternoon - I love this time of year.

Not much else to report today... looks like the heli trip is definitely on for Saturday... hopefully the weather will be kind and it all goes according to plan.

Where do you start?

Another glorious day...

...although they are still forecasting the snow to come in and the temperatures to drop from tomorrow afternoon onwards - we shall see!

I had a young couple this morning and the booking notes basically said they were happy on reds and blacks. When I met them they divulged that one had skied for most of her life and the guy had never had a lesson in his 2 weeks worth of experience. 'This will be interesting I thought.... where do I start?' It had been an awfully long time since the girl had had a lesson too.

Anyway (as I regularly see) technically the girl was reasonable but just cautious and the guy used a large amount of brute force etc to get down. Anyway it was like running two completely different lessons all in one as I was not only saying one thing to one and other stuff to the other but their level of understanding etc was quite different too. The runs we should have been doing to get the most out of them respectively was quite different too.

Anyway, cutting a long story short we battled through and she was happy with her improvements and he made some changes (which I doubt will stick as there is hardly enough time to cover it all) but it was certainly interesting to say the least.

I caught the bus back home at lunchtime and I was thinking how lucky we are to have a free, efficient and regular bus service, which, at this time of the day and season, is totally empty.

Clare passed her EMS Off Piste Assessment exam in La Grave today so she is currently en-route home so I am getting this done early as hopefully we will head out for a drink later.

I have been busy planning the day tomorrow and really hoping the weather does not crap out on us as we head to Bonneval for heliday which is better than I normally do on a Saturday as once again our incoming guests are self drivers therefore I do not need to go anywhere at all on the roads tomorrow - YAY.

Looking forward to some slightly cooler and snowier weather next week as we still have another 6 weeks or so of the season to go.... and a little while before Easter hols start and chaos reigns once again.

Im hoping I have some good photos tomorrow to show everyone and then maybe get a little video edit going for you all aswell that will whet the appetite - it will most definitely be Spring as opposed to Wintery snow tomorrow so I am not expecting face shots or anything like that!

Disappointment

I woke to see a veil of cloud over the resort out the window.... uhhh ohh I thought this will not be an easy choice (if we have a choice at all). I met with some of my colleagues at 8.30am at the Sun Bar and called SAF helicopter people to check in with them and see what they were thinking about the weather. They were not confident as the weather was closing in fast. With the melt freeze cycle we go through at this time of year the snow would still be crusty from last nights freeze and without the early morning sun it would be rigid indefinitely. The decision was made to cancel the trip to Bonneval... even if we braved the snow we could be stuck over there and facing a 6 hour taxi journey back!

The process is that as we get to the top of the T-Bar at the top of the Val d'Isere glacier we call the chopper to firm the final details up.... I took the guests out in the deteriorating conditions and we did way out wide in the Cugnai first up and found some nice snow... then we headed up to do the Col Pers. As we arrived at the top of the glacier at around 11am the conditions were AWFUL and there was no way I would have received positive news if I had been calling the chopper people to firm the uplift.

Having fun 'way out wide' in the Cugnai... we found some nice soft snow on strictly north facing aspects.

So we entered the Col Pers which at the moment requires a little bit of a rope in over some dodgy rocks and slippy snow. Anyway we made it in there by hook or by crook and the conditions were now so bad that as we set off we could hardly see any further than about 50m ahead and the light was VERY flat indeed.

Little bit of rock scrambling to get into the Col Pers.... in ever decreasing visibility (not that the picture does it justice but it was snowy, windy and flat light)

Anyway we made it down and headed left as I did not trust the Gorge de Malpassat re-freeze at the lower altitude last night, and headed to the lower Vallonnets before crossing the Pont St Charles and back down the road into Le Fornet.

SHOCK-HORROR as we headed into town for some lunch at the Brussels (lovely lunch guys thanks very much) the weather was actually brightening up.... SURELY NOT... how could it. But yes, we were able to sit on the terrace of the Brussels and eat our lunch with sunglasses on. We had a couple of drinks as we had done a long morning and by the time I left at about 3pm it was bright sunshine with hardly a cloud in the sky. The weather is supposed to close back in tonight.

The law of the sod was ours / mine today!

Anyway it gives something to look forward to next time the guys are back out.

My quest to get a heli-drop in continues this season!

Good games of rugby to watch this evening and well done to Wales.... and well done to England too!

Taking our guests out for their freebie lesson tomorrow am.... not sure what else tomorrow has in store - we shall see.

Piccadilly Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy I KNOW Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy She loved La Grave - but not the first time she has been.

Getting gloomier and turning to SNOW.

It felt a little like a normal Sunday today with the normal freebie 1/2 day lesson. I took 8 year old Morgan out and he was a real chatterbox. The conditions were not exactly ideal and the light turned pretty flat near the end.

The Folie was not exactly rocking today... but the conditions were far from perfect!

Morgan loved the Actimel course and going over the little jumps and through the tunnel... I reckon he would happily have lapped around there all morning / day / week if he had the chance.

Anyway I came home at lunchtime and stopped at Spar and they had some lovely steaks that were on knock down price so I went for it and had the most amazing home made steak sandwich for lunch - YUMMY!

This lady was cruising along and happened to look my way as I snapped away and thought I was some sort of a weirdo!

It is snowing very hard now, yippee. It is supposed to carry on all night and into tomorrow so hopefully it should freshen things up nicely.

Not much else to report apart from to say...

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

Some fresh snow and it keeps going.

One moment people are talking about the end of the season and the next the slopes look like the middle of Winter again yippee.

Anyway this was taken last night as the snow arrived...

... and by this morning when I was up top there were some fresh tracks being put down...

... and by late this afternoon it had really socked in again and was snowing very hard (it has eased off a little now - story of the week really, bit of sun, bit of snow, bit of cloud (bit of everything really) forecast)...

So I had a nice lady from Brighton this morning... she was really lovely and given the poor light did really well to pick her confidence back up again after being scared being taken down a tough run yesterday afternoon by a well meaning husband.

After lunch I went for a ski with Clare but the light was getting worse by the moment and snow was getting harder therefore we only stayed out for an hour or so before coming home. Clare made a really nice lemon drizzle cake yesterday so we had (more than one) cup of tea and cake this afternoon.

Clare is in Les Menuires daily from tomorrow preparing for the Eurotest next Friday so she is now sharpening her skis (in total since she bought those skis she must have edged and waxed them some 100 times I estimate) and waxing them.... they were running mighty quickly today so hopefully she will prepare well on what is known as one of the tougher places to do a Eurotest. Fingers crossed.

With only 5 weeks to go of teaching this season we have another fairly quiet week this week... however I am back on my snowboard again tomorrow teaching a regular of mine - have to say I am looking forward to it since it has been a couple of weeks since I was last on it. Maybe some basic freestyle tomorrow or some off piste - not sure we shall see.

Talking of snowboarding... look at this amazing photo taken last week in the X-Games over in Tignes. Great shot.

Road update: After the rock fall the other week they are still working on the repairs to the rock face and the road is currently down to one lane with traffic lights... so bar a few minutes wait the road is moving fine all the time.

They have pretty much all got 100% coverage so no worries that side of things.

As it has generally been hot it has gotten pretty slushy later on in the day but nothing too drastic.

Now we have had another cold snap with fresh snow is will not only provide some cover but being cooler the snow should settle and compact down so give even more season out of the snow.

Unless we get weeks on end of hot weather over the next two / three weeks (not forecast at this stage) then I see no reason why the pistes will not remain in good condition for this time of the year until well into April. The second half of April and after pro-longed periods of hot weather the general rule is get up early, ski high, ski long, late lunch and go home!

I have to say I have not been Brev way for a while so can't say exactly how it feels down there but from the road today it looked pretty damn good!

Hope that helps.

kitenski, As far as I could tell, it's as paulio suggests.

It was designed to get them to turn without having to think about it too much. Some of the kids (all 3 year olds) wandered a bit when there wasn't something to help guide them, but put something like this down and they all managed to turn pretty well.

Not so much to get them parallel, but more to get the idea in their heads that if they pressure their skis in a certain way, it's cause things like turning to happen.

Piccadilly Thanks - always trying to get as many photos up... must try and get around to getting a better camera so the quality will be even better.

bobmcstuff The Whotedot Ones' - loving them. Really nice all mountain sort of skis... pretty useless for carving and making 'active' turns that are not skidded but great for general skiing, moguls, freestyle, off-piste etc.

shoogly Nice photos, thanks for posting them... yes it was lovely and sunny wasn't it... bit cooler with some snow this week. Col Pers - snow in there at the moment is just perfect... but the entrance is meaty non the less. Sorry to hear about the back - what on earth happened? Hope it mends soon!

As far as the last picture is concerned. It partly gets the kids more parallel but gets them used to making round shaped turns without needing the visual queue of the instructor and having to follow them.... the instructors line has already been put down for them to follow and in general by having a visual stimulus kids of this sort of age will generally work out how to turn. With young kids very often the difficulty is getting them into snowplough initially.... once they are in the plough then turning comes relatively naturally and they learn how to press and rotate to achieve the turn... all the time the line (in this case) shows them where they should be going. When they leave the 'pen' they are much more skilled in being able to follow the instructors line (one hopes anyway).

A sad demise.

Another couple of cm's overnight BUT with some wind around. I was very glad I decided to go for 5 layers in total again today as the wind was getting into every nook and cranny!

Enough snow to create fresh tracks but not enough to stop the paved surface coming through - first thing this morning.

Mind you without the wind it was so lovely up there... although the weather was once again 'hanging' over Le Fornet - under those clouds it will be snowing (a little) again.

I took Jason and his wife up the Solaise and Jason was riding really well. Since I last saw him he has managed to fit in a few days of riding (which would have been more if he had not injured himself on the first day of his trip to Whistler this year (woops)) and he is riding well. We did some good technique practice and worked on dynamic shorter radius stuff... the snow was JUST PERFECT lovely and groomed with a layer of soft fresh on top.

We witnessed a chopper come in to treat someone who looked like they may have done a (very) small rock drop (some 2 foot) off the side of one of the blue runs that connects up the Madeleine and Datcha areas at the top of the Solaise... it hovered, landed and after a while it flew away with the casualty. The whole piste had to be closed.

Anyway after that we headed back down on the Solaise Express and that was when I witnessed something not very nice at all...

...in the bottom left'ish of the photo you will see a group of people in the middle of the piste (yea I know this photo was taken from a distance away)... top right a helicopter coming towards the scene of the incident.

As we came down on the Solaise Express over the top of the piste we saw the moments after the accident. It sounds like a 22yr old British seasonairre lost control and crashed. We witnessed from the lift as we pretty much went right over the top of it the pisteurs doing chest compressions on the young man... another pisteur in the intervals pumping air into the mans mouth / lungs.... i.e. we were witnessing CPR in the middle of the piste. The clothes top was open and I am assuming a defibrillator was about to be applied.

Cutting a long story short the man unfortunately died. How sad and harrowing. The whole piste was very crowded and a crowd was gathering and I felt pretty helpless as we passed overhead.

I am sure this will hit the UK press sooner or later! It is possible he was over from La Plagne for the day (think it was a he (it looked like it as we went overhead)) and that he also may have crashed into the snow cannon... not sure.

Anyway that was a sobering sight just before lunchtime.

The afternoon was spent tidying up at home. Just been out for a drink with some family friends.

Clare had a good day Eurotest race training over in Les Menuires and was somewhere around about a second off the pace (which is good since she has not really been in Eurotest training mode recently). She also did not wax her skis for the ideal conditions. So hopefully with the right wax and a few more days training she will be on the money.

Very sad news about the man above. Always sobering to hear about deaths in ski resorts, especially on piste. Very disrespectful of people to stand and watch as well, it's just like when there's a nasty crash on motorways. Must put a real downer on the day when you see something like that.

Quite a few deaths sadly reported in this thread, in fact.
