Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Arghh how I dream of a hot tub and sauna....

... and back to reality. The coldest day of the season so far for sure.

Not many people keen to eat outdoors at the sun... (whats that then?) ...bar today.

We had a nice sprinkle of new snow overnight and I went for the 8 layers option and glad I did... however a certain colleague of mine forgot to dry his boots out last night and then forgot his boot warmers today... he must have been in MAJOR pain today.

Started with a really nice group (yay I have a male in my group - that makes a change from the norm at the moment) this morning and we did loads of good technique work on reds and black this morning... for those who know me and my teaching I did chariots a fair bit today so that got the blood pumping I can tell you. Tomorrow I am doing a moguls sessions with them and then off piste on Thursday.

The afternoon I was back on my board and Andy did an awesome job of learning 180 jumps, switch riding as well as dynamic short turns - all in one afternoon - still in early practice phase but still he did a great job in only 3 hours.

A view of cold and snowy Val this afternoon... it is supposed to get even colder over the next few days - can I make it up to 9 layers tomorrow - don't think they'll fit! Notice the skier in the bottom left of the picture on this red run down to La Daille (the Orange) showing fantastic posture (not) - way too flexed in the knee and not much else to keep him (or her) centred on the ski... result - sitting way back.

Off to the gym now... and then I may really treat myself to that sauna.

Where do I start folks.... well it went from about 30 degrees in the leisure centre (sorry for the photo - reflection of the chandeliers in the glass sorry); it is very nice... to a current outside temperature without any sort of windchill of -14 degree c and DROPPING fast. I reckon by the morning it will be about -20 out there. brrr chilly.

No pam w and others that guy had no backpack or anything - just cr*p posture... yes quads of iron no doubt.

Ha ha phillip33 very funny. I actually met Clare when I gave her a snowboard lesson when she was a chalet girl - little bit of a cliche but hey ho! Re lessons - I have PM'ed you - yes is the answer - have a few spots left but only in the afternoons that week - in fact no-one in our school has any mornings left that week.

10 layers!!!!! That's mental. Is this because you stand around a lot teaching?

I've skied in -20 before and never felt the need for more than 2 base layers, a mid layer and insulated jacket.

What base layers do you use Steve?

Swimming pool looks great! Will pay that a visit when we're over.

Is there a Speedo rule?

The guy with the posture... is it possible he's like that due to being on a run that's too difficult for him, he's bricking it and is in self survival mode?

Yes shoogly you do stand around rather a lot teaching. If i'm also honest then the more you ski the more efficient you become at not only saving energy but minimising inefficient movements which means you burn less calories (hence I need to go to the gym to stay in shape). All in all you need a lot of insulation when teaching.

My layering system is....... ummmm..... unconventional. I just whack on several t-shirts on a day like this and then some thermals over the top... before mid-layers and then finally the wind-proof shell ski school jacket over the top (I don't like thick jackets anyway).

The leisure centre is lovely - yes. NO there is no speedo rule (only in the good?!? old days!)

Yes the guy is most probably in self survival mode... but some people ski like that way too much anyway. Brute force gets people down some runs and as they get older they cannot understand why they lose the edge!

Tony Ellwood you'll be fine - wrap up extra well and get a face mask if you are going to be moving at speed!

Todays update to follow.

that's why I like to keep taking some lessons; ski smarter, not harder.

When it's so cold, it's time to do lots of energetic stuff, rather than whizzing along at top speed, I reckon.

Or - a more radical solution, do some cross country skiing. Keeps you warm, I can tell you, especially when you're not very good at it. I'm sure our instructor was nothing like as warm as I was this morning.

Not as bad as it should have been ...

The effect of the sun can be amazing as although it was VERY VERY cold (as mentioned this am) first up it was bearable.

My weather station gives me the good news. The top temp is the sensor JUST outside the front door where the latent heat warmed it up to a balmy -14... the middle one is the temp in my front room this am - loss of heat through the window and door is quite large. The bottom reading is the biggie: -20.9... I took this as I had noticed the temp was creeping up slightly as the sun rose... 10 mins earlier it was -22.

Anyway I thought I was paranoid about getting frozen today until I got to the SunBar for morning coffee before starting work...

Kieran proudly showing off his 3 puffer jackets he was wearing today.

Anyway we made the most of the weather and FANTASTIC snow and I did a moguls lesson. Well I would have if Tommeuse had not been out of order... so some quick re-thinking and decided to do moguls drills on the piste instead before we could get around to the Epaule de Charvet and finally the S bumps.

My great team on the lift this morning - I did not keep my gloves off for very long I can tell you that!

I just realised that I had not uploaded much video recently... so here is todays edit.

http://youtube.com/v/LGuqjRSMEWI

Talking of lifts not working I bumped into a colleague who works for EV2 over in Tignes. He was looking rather stressed as we queued to get on the Funival this am. He explained that he had planned to do the Familial to warm his off piste clients up. When he got to the base of the Tommeuse he found out that the lift was not working.... 'oh no' he thought as he had a heli-pick up scheduled for the Lac de Chevril for 12.30 (this was at 10.40am). So now (with paying clients) he had to 1) take the Funi, 2) ski to the Borsat lift, 3) take the Borsat, 4) ski to Val Claret, 5) take Les Tuffs lift, 6) hike the ridge, 7) make it to the heli..... all in 1.50mins with clients - he was going to have to move. He had choice words to say about the lifties I can tell you.

Fantastic view over to Marmottes Couloirs and Super S Colouirs (on the left end of the photo) from the Epaule de Charvet this am.... that is why Val d'Isere is known as having the most accessible off piste (possibly) in the world. The whole of this face is easily accessible via a traverse and pole from the top of Manchet or Solaise Express Chairs.

Had a fun afternoon with the seasonaiires - they did well in the moguls. Again it is a group of 6 girls though - back to the women only status again then!

We have a date for our TV debut. 'The Wedding Proposal' will be on Channel 4 at 9pm (UK time) on Sunday 12th February... scary stuff as we will not see the cut (as far as I know) before it goes out. Fingers crossed!

Thank goodness the sun came out otherwise it would have been hell out there.

...as I write this the temperature this evening has already fallen to -17 and the thermometer continues to fall. It is expected to drop to -23 tonight... and some.

Anyway I had a great day on the hill. As instructors we always say (sorry to make you all jealous) 'a bad day on the hill is better than a good day in the office!'

First up was the off piste session with Kirsty and Bob... we did the Col de Madeleine (long version), then Steves shoulder (my secret stash that rarely disappoints (and to be honest is not very secret at all)). Then we did a couple of sweeps off the side of the Glacier Express before tackling the Super S Couloir.

Start of the Col de Madeleine... Kirsty puts some turns in - no-one in sight at all.

It was quite 'moody' down there but SUPERB snow.... a few fresh tracks to be had.

The start of the Super S Couloir number 1.

It gets a little tight through the middle of the couloir so Kirsty and Bob did a little bit of side-slipping for 10 metres or so... then opened it up and let rip - good on you folks - they were KNACKERED by the end though - 3 days of being put through their paces!

The afternoon was quite fun too but why do some people want to learn how to carve, do moguls, short radius turns and off-piste all in three hours........ it takes a little longer than that to 'learn' those... so goal negotiation was definitely needed... they had fun (I think) and certainly improved their short radius turns.

It is mighty cold out here as you know and I am finding that the cold is sapping all my energy so I am really tired this evening.

Just trying to catch up with a few things at this end but more importantly giving Clare some positive vibes and encouragement this evening as she finds out tomorrow if she has passed her BASI ISTD Level 4 Technical and tomorrow is the last day she can impress / make the grade. In fine Steve style (also so Clare does not have to cook this evening) I have ordered a takeaway pizza - a yummy 'Canibal' from Val Pizza... 10 mins til its here... CANT WAIT.

Right off to wrap up warm on the sofa and catch Channel 5 in 45 mins time as Henry (from Henrys Avalanche Talk) is part of a documentary about dare devils who outrun avalanches (or something along those lines) so keen to see that.

A personal view of the snow is pretty good on piste and very variable off piste, with significant areas affected by the wind and well scoured. Temperatures are cool but but not really cold and no wind now.

Not the result we were hoping for...

Unfortunately good was not good enough for Clare this time... next time.

I had REALLY REALLY good skiers this morning - some of the best skiers I have ever taught who were not instructors already.

5 guys who had done countless hundred of weeks skiing between them and knew Val and Tignes very well. I was quite impressed with what we managed to achieve in 3 hours...

We skied short turns down black runs, we skied (for me the first time this season actually) the black Sache Piste and the wonderful moguls down there - they came on well with that... We fitted in some freestyle training... they were pulling 360's already so I did some backwards carving with them and then we did some (normal forwards) carving development... lots of tips and tidying their skiing up here and there..... I was knackered by lunchtime.

Great views down towards Les Brevieres - I love making trips there.

The afternoon was punctuated with update texts from Clare as I had a ski with a couple of colleagues (cheers JSH and Rodders). When the result came through I came home... quick change and then it was time to go out and bury the bad news... a few drinks later and we were at Le Lodge for a FANTASTIC steak for dinner... the night was quite fun in the end.

I did manage to get frost nip on a couple of my toes yesterday as it was BITTERLY cold so I will need to keep an eye on that to make sure it does not happen again... my toe was purple / going on black in places and it has been a couple of years since that last happened - ekkk!

COLD beyond belief

I really did NOT enjoy leaving the house at 6am this morning... it was -25.3 on the thermo.

Anyway we hit the road and it become immediately apparent that although the road was (generally) pretty clear of snow it was black ice that was the issue today. Most cars (including me) were in 1st gear all the way down... not touching the brakes and carefully turning corners. We saw a few cars slide into the banks on the side of the road... it was VERY slow going but we got down in the end. Due to the extreme cold there were NUMEROUS cars all the way to Geneva that simply broke down... I must have counted 50 breakdowns in total... would not want to be the French AA today!

As we got closer to Geneva the ice issue became less but the amount of snow on the road increased and to be honest the roads near Geneva were worse than around Val (weird)... however the main issue was the wind - it was blowing a GALE in Geneva and the car was getting buffeted... so ice, snow and wind made for quite an intense journey.

Lake Annecy looked lovely, but intimidatingly cold today.

Geneva was even more chaotic than normal but I found our new guests and we hit the road home again... it was a pleasant and easy journey back.

Enjoying a nice beer in front of the rugby now (come on England) and then I think I shall have an early night.

Tomorrow I am not skiing (can't say I too fussed) as it will cold once again... I am doing my tri-annual first aid course tomorrow (yawn) but at least I will be indoors with tea and biscuits on tap!

Not much else to report folks....... oh one more thing. I was sorry to hear about the British holidaymaker who had a heart attack on the Olympic Gondola on Thursday... by the time the pisteurs got the defiberator (sp?) it was too late and by the time the doctor had been airlifted in she was pronounced dead at the scene... all very sad but there you go!

Looking forward to temperatures increasing a little this week.... woopee but there is no snow forecase - booooooo!

TTFN. Steve
