Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Agree on the above comments regarding the BBC interview..... I have heard that European Pubs Jack's Bar & Evolution in Meribel were shut owing to licence issues regarding complaints regarding noise and people jumping in the hotel pool next door when leaving the bar..... European Pubs have opened two new bars called Copina one in Meribel and one in Courchevel so not convinced of the comments regarding shutting Jack's and Evo owing to Brexit as they have opened two new bars ! Puzzled

There are good and bad bars everywhere - in a ski resort some target a particular demographic or nationality, but regardless if you get it wrong then your stuffed.

As we are all in/approaching our 50s, we dont frequent places like The Loop or The Marmot in Tignes (despite them being "brit" pubs) any more, more likely to be found in The Pigs Tail (brit) in Lavachet or the Embuscade (french) up top of Rue de La Poste or the sadly departed Alpaka.

There used to be a big popular skandi nightclub on Rue de La Poste which we frequented in our 30s - its now a supermarket, despite being super popular years ago.

Skier X'ed out

Well I'm totally wiped out this evening... it was just me and the 10 year old lad of the family I've been skiing with the last few days and all he wanted to do all day was work on carving but in particular he fancied trying his hand at skier cross so we went over to the Tignes course up in the Palet sector (I prefer the run there to the Val one) ... when I say he was addicted from the off set I really mean it. We / he lapped and lapped around... working on line, carving (with the odd trip up the Grattalu lift to work on the carving etc) and then we worked out a handicap time system between the two of us to make it more interesting... it was ABSOLUTELY KNACKERING as I basically was giving him a good 15 seconds and then racing flat out to catch up with him and then beating him (sometimes the handicap was not enough and he beat me) but it was great fun.

Shattered now though!

We stopped at the BRAND NEW 'The Corner' cafe in Val Claret which is next to the bottom of the Tuffs lift for lunch. The people behind it is one of the owners of Blue Note (well Lou has sold her share to her brother Matt now), her boyfriend and basically all the other people that were behind the food and serving side of the Planks Cafe in previous year (they have had a shake up there). Anyway awesome is all I can say.... tasty and cheap... pasty and chips and then I helped young C wash his lunch down by sharing a banoffee pie - so NOT French food but a yummy taste of home once in a while eh!

Being a Saturday the pistes were deserted

The best of luck to them!

Apart from that and now having a very stiff back, a nice family meal this evening there is not much else to report... Ben is slowing getting back to his normal self so hopefully he can go back to creche on Monday - fingers crossed! We shall see!

A freshen up

Im not sure I had a great nights sleep as I woke up feeling more tired than when I went to bed last night. I was more concerned though that my back was still rather tight and sore (all that racing yesterday).

Anyway as I write this evening I am pleased to say that it seems to have eased up nicely which is good news... tomorrow will be a full on day skiing with some off piste so I had better be fighting fit!

Alas it was not too early a start to the day thankfully as Clare and the kids were not going anywhere in particular. Ben seemed better too so I think one more night tonight and we will be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel - phew!

So we had about 15cm of fresh snow in town and about 20cm up high and it was still snowing but there was not too much wind... well relative little anyway! Up high it was quite windy though! So I met the same client as I have had the last few days (and have a few more times over the next week) and after dropping his kids of at the group lessons they are on we headed off to work on sagittal splits... a problem he was having with his long radius turns! So up top on the Bellevarde there was a punchy wind blowing but not strong enough to really affect the lift openings. With the fresh snow rather haphazardly spread out because of the wind effect some places were quite deep and others scoured. We hit the various easier pistes up top to do a series of exercises and finally we got some video footage and then watched it inside the exit area of the funi.

Clare took Olivia out for a ski when I got back and I had some luck as Ben had a mega sleep for about 2.5 hours... it meant I had a chill out time - a rare one at that during the Winter that is for sure. I even managed to properly watch the 2nd run of the mens slalom - yay. In fact Val d'Isere is a rather happy place this evening as Clement Noel who came 2nd today is a native of Val and is still part of the Club des Sports here.

Anyway it was a rather relaxing afternoon and after the kids were in bed it has been a relaxing evening too!

So the snow continues to fall intensely this evening and we must have had a good 30cm already in the last 24 hours down here in town and there could be a LOT more coming tonight into tomorrow. The temps have risen to a few degrees below 0 so it is not baltic anymore which is nice!

A full day including some off piste on the cards tomorrow before I head down the valley to do a food shop is the schedule for tomorrow which all in all means it will be a long day tomorrow. Better get some sleep then!

PBJ - it was and lots more tonight eh!
PeakyB - yup most certainly is. If you think about it its only 2 lift rides away from Val too! Bargain!

@swiftoid, it's a disgrace isn't it? I saw a quote from someone online the other day saying they like going skiing in Meribel "because it has a great British vibe". FFS.

For me, part of the pleasure of going skiing in France is enjoying the French food and culture (and same for Austria). I cannot stand the British attitude of going abroad and expecting everyone to speak English and serve pie and chips, and being offended when they don't.

Val d'Isere is overrun with Brits, hopefully not all rude ones.

Steve Angus-hi Steve, do you know if STVI do a 'student discount' for large groups of students-I am looking to bring a school group of around 30 next December (week before Christmas so quite quiet) and wondered if it was worth contacting them independently? We've successfully asked for them before at other resorts during that week but never tried Val.

Cheers.

PBJ - great day you had there!
snowhound - yea as far as I know you can get something yes... drop them a bell. Good luck

Gonna be quick tonight

Well folks Ill start with an apology - I forgot to get photos today! Whoops!

Im going to be super quick tonight as I am REALLY REALLY shattered, have been down the mountain food shopping this evening and still have a quite a few things to do before going to bed.

Anyway the winds were raging at breakfast time and Radio Val were calling it a 4/5 av day. There was a good 20cm snow overnight but the problem was that it was nearer 1m in some places as it had drifted and nothing elsewhere?

Ben went back to creche today and Olivia was at school so with that all sorted I headed to town, collected some off piste gear for the same guy I've had the last few days and off we went. They actually managed to get things moving quite quickly and by 0930 Solaise was open and a few other lifts. The wind was coming from the north once again and was slowly dropping off (not that the visibility was improving though!).

It was the first time that 'A' had ever seen the off piste gear and worn it so after doing the safely chat we went looking for some snow for him... not only was the snow VERY variable from 'nice' (in places) to almost unskiable in others. The snow is VERY VERY unstable out there... with the sun coming out tomorrow there could be some interesting things happening for the worse out there - stay safe everyone.

Anyway a few laps and then finally when they got the lifts atop the Solaise open later in the morning some skiing up there before we headed for lunch. 'A' was very fatigued due to a few falls but for his first attempt at off piste he did well all things considering... the main thing being that the snow was tricky to say the least!

Lunch was take at the new Refuge restaurant atop the Solaise and boy is it swanky in there and very nice indeed. It has been totally refurbished from the old place and totally unrecognisable! Amazing food. Not cheap though!

Nice in Le Refuge with a lovely menu (albeit expensive - even by Val standards!!)

The afternoon we did some drills for off piste performance and finally as the pistes that were open got very churned up we finished with some moguls.

As I said above after I came off the slopes I headed to Bourg for some food shopping and a few other things down there and by the time I did that and got back and put it all away it has turned into a very long day indeed!

Sorry folks hoping to have a more interesting update tomorrow!

Stupidity galore

We awoke to clear skies and a cold start at that. I had to get to the office to get some off piste gear to take with a colleague to meet our lessons at the bottom of the Tommeuse... basically a SH and a group of his friends are meeting us at the bottom of the Tommeuse a few mornings this week and whilst for the first couple of days a couple of colleagues are off piste with a group each I am on piste with young 'E'

So after collecting the gear we were off up the Olympic to make our way to the Tommeuse for 0915. No sooner had I got out of the Olympic but I could not believe the reckless behaviour I saw... first thing a man without ANY off piste gear ON HIS OWN trekking into the Cairn and putting the first tracks in. Talk about stupid - beyond stupid. However as the day progressed it appeared that no major incidents had been reported.

Snapped a photo of the man walking on his own towards the Cairn!

However whilst the pisteurs here were still clearing much of the resort you should check out this video clip taken somewhere else in the Alps this morning - wow - just WOW - look how that propogates all along the ridge line for ever and ever!!!

https://www.facebook.com/100009387516743/videos/2254419968214232/

Anyway we had a lovely morning ('E' and I) and there were some great tweaks made... the main thing was that with the snow being soft lumps and bumps started forming immediately so we hunted out some nice terrain and some great snow to develop some better foundations before pushing the fold a little more tomorrow.

Yes endoman vegetarian section I know!
nemesys - no cheap no definitely not!
PBJ - thanks for posting the photo - nice to meet you in the lift line this morning briefly! Looks like you had a good day - id say that first photo was the pitch under the Datcha lift - I know the pitch well!

I took a quick lunch at the Sun Bar - yummy Croque Mr before heading out for a ski with 'A' again - lots of lesson time with him the last week or so! The plan for the afternoon was to work on his moguls and indeed we lapped around and around on the Tommeuse and BOY were the bumps nice and soft and fun to ski and BOY did he make some great improvements this pm!

This evening I have managed to plod through some more paperwork and jobs at home and of course have been glued to the TV with what is happening in Westminster - wow!

Nice morning views!

Rather nice on the pistes today!

Tomorrow I could be posting quite late as I am heading down the valley to Bourg to do an avalanche safety talk to the guys and girls of Coolbus so I won't be back until later on.

@Goliard, yes it is Grimentz and there are a couple of pistes below that slope too. It did snow Tuesday/Wednesday last week as well as the big dump at the weekend. Unfortunately we left on Saturday but friends still there tell me conditions are amazing. Interestingly the piste du chamois hasn't opened yet this season as there was evidence of a lot of avalanche activity in that combe even before this weekends snow.
