What sort of parent sends a 4-yo bairn out for ski lesson on a day like today?!?

My just gone 7 year old had "the best lesson ever" today with Rab from TDC. He learnt to ski powder and is absolutely delighted with himself, even though he did whinge a bit on the uphill climb home, until Rab popped him back up on his shoulder along with his skis and carried him home. What a day! I just hope we can get down the mountain in the morning...

Spoke to my sister tonight, she's out of there at 4am tomorrow morning, says it's been chaos today, coach crash near Ste Foy etc, unfortunately with a one road in, one road out situation with tens of 1000's all going up and down the same road it's always going to be a nightmare when bad weather arrives, c'est la vie.......

Any idea of the amount of snow that has fallen?

@Raven, plenty I think 30cm or so in town, roads are bad apparently. Loads of lifts closed today.

Hopefully the travel chaos will sort itself out today and everyone will arrive safely in resort. In 25 years of travelling to the Alps i can't remember ever hearing of travel conditions like this. Looking forward to hearing how great the snow is from you guys in resort !!

Got the lurgy so super quick update on my finely iPhone keypad.
Am.... Lesson started fine then came down with something so quickly I had to cancel rest of session.... Sorry folks.
Spent rest of am away from family and colleagues to stop it spreading but apparently couple colleagues under the weather a tad too.... Anyway by pm felt bit better (not now though) so continued with a very long standing client booking and we pottered around.
Can't work out how to post photos from here so no pic this eve.... However it was COLD, occasionally flurries, cloudy and miserable day on the hill..... We have about 90% open now and about 50cm of fresh that was heavily wind affected but pisted to perfection.
The people who had shocker days yesterday.... I feel for you... PM clients slept in out of service train in BSM last night with 3 youngish kids.... Anyway thanks to my wife for doing it all today / this eve.
Cold and sunny tomorrow.

@Steve Angus, sorry to hear that you're not well, I hope that you get better soon and are back to 100%. We're all keen to hear what you are up to this week.
Re yesterday, like @harvsurrey, we were worried about vis first thing so after we waved skian and his mrs off onto Ben's bus (they got back to Geneva without a problem which was a relief), we went for a coffee waiting for the weather to clear (which meteoblue had promised). Ended up Belvarde side at about 11am and in fact the vis was good as we appeared to be above the cloud.
Opting for an easy day, we did Diebold a few times which was excellent then moved onto to a few laps of Grand Pre accessed by the blue to the left of Verte as Genepy was closed at the time. Grand pre was dead and had excellent snow conditions, in my view this is one of the best green's in EK. We thought we saw @Steve Angus, just offpiste with a little girl there but it was one of his colleagues.
Then back up to the top of the Olympic to ski OK down to La Daille, the very top had a couple of icy patches, but was mainly in excellent condition the only exception being the bit just before the Folie which was a combination of moguls and ice patches. Then below the Folie, we hit cloud and it started to snow! Just shows that sometimes you can have snow on the lower slopes and get none on the up slopes.
In summary, great snow, good vis, and the slopes were dead (well until 2:30ish when we retired for the day)
Let's see what today brings when all those poor souls stuck down the mountain yesterday will be skiing with avengence!

@trainee snowboard jedi, sounds like a similar day to us , started on dieebold then back up and down ok to follie , we the headed across to val claret , up tichot and acros and down into le lac , as you said vis then dropped so we headed down vertr and then ok into la daille but that was about 2.45 .......
today may be manic but being here for 2 weeks means not having to ski first lift to last

@trainee snowboard jedi, how are the young 'uns getting on, very jealous of your extended jaunt this season! Now we've seen the last of the relo's off after Christmas, can start prepping for next week - this time next week we'll be on the first lift, or at least aiming for it! @Steve Angus, get well soon!

Be thankful you are coming next week, this week looks like carnage. This was the queue for the Olympic when I walked past at 10:15 this morning, excuse the iPhone photo, the queue goes down the ramp and weaves around the back of the Solaise Express.
The wife and I are doing an off piste camp this afternoon hence taking it easy this morning and hoping we miss most of this.
Re kids, my 5 year old is doing really well and now needs a ski pass as she's skiing Madeleine. My 3.5 year old is struggling a little, the ESF ski garden is rammed and they are not getting much individual attention. We managed to get a couple of 1-2-1 lessons for him with Steve last week which has helped.
Enjoy your trip next week, the snow is great, next week will be dead, and they are currently forecasting more snow on Sunday but we shall see.

my god !! ok after yeeeeeeears of skiing the states this is my first new year week in Val , lift queues are just unbelieveable not only fron how busy but muppets standing on your skis , once today i had a guy completely across the back of my skis as i went to get to the lift gate , totally oblivious to the fact i could not move forwards , i will admit i did get slightly shirty .....
we went up on the glacier above fornet and queues were fine ,and we scooted around the resort avoiding the worst bits , but bloody hell it was cold ..... i have skiied in minus 30 in the states and dispite only seeing -16 on the top of the olympic i was completely frozen today feet fingers the lot .
ski's finally in for a service tonight as last week left the bases not looking pretty , so tomorrow should be better .

@harvsurrey, I know what you mean about the cold. Its a totally different cold in europe than the states - ive been to colorado in -20C and quite happy in just a jumper whereas in europe I would be a human popsickle by then!!
Please do lots of shouting at the skiers and get them sorted before I arrive in a few days time!

@harvsurrey, I share your pain on the lift queue muppetery, we went up Solaise Express at 2pm and although the queue had gone down by then, lots of pushing and shoving still taking place. In fairness to the lifties they were lining people up in 4s so that there were no empty seats.
I did an intro to offpiste this afternoon up by Glacier (the blue run not the glacier) and was standing under the lift on a small patch off offpiste between runs when a ski fell off someone on the lift above and I kid you not, it missed me by less than a metre. Shocked to say the least, but it could have been worse. I picked the ski up and boarded to the side of the piste where I met a French instructor who was very apologetic and 'couldn't understand how it happened'. Lucky all round.
I have to say that as someone who normally skis from 9am to around 3pm, it was interesting to be on the mountain after 3pm. At this point, we had Glacier almost to ourselves until the lift closed at 4pm, then all we had for company as we headed down the mountain were the Espace Killy staff making sure the pistes were empty - it was great, although the light went at about 4:45.
lesson 2 offpiste tomorrow, this time I won't be standing under a lift!

 You know it makes sense.

we are used to regimented efficiency of the usa , and we hate to admit our fave resort has a snowboard ban too which helps some lif queue issues (do not worry i board on water in the summer when not sailing a skiff )
as long as i dont get my skis pinned down then i will be happy , but god i hope tomorrow is warmer

I am alive folks but trying to do my share of home duties and still not 100% meant I was in bed early again last night... Thanks for all your well wishes... Battling through and feeling better bit by bit. Will give a full update later on and some replies to the comments above with some photos as still not booted up my laptop for this update.... It has been clear and very very cold as reported and pretty darn busy too. Thanks for the well wishes and hopefully back in the straight and narrow to give a proper update with pics tonight.

@PaulC1984, @stevew, snow is forecast this weekend, but that could all change in a heartbeat
They often close the cable car up to Grand Motte in high wind, so no surprise there, for me the best bit (snow condition wise) of Double M is from the top of the funicular anyway.
