I arrive on 21st!!

I generally find at this time of year the rumours are far worse than actual conditions in resort! The resort piste teams do a fantastic job with conditions presented to them!

We have visited LDA the week before Christmas for the last 4 years. There has been some trips with no snow in resort on arrival. Still had an excellent time up the mountain!

6 days and counting!

Have been in Val since Saturday with the family - the upper pistes (Solaise, Bellevarde etc) are lovely. No worse than this time last year in my view. No queues, half empty slopes and lots of sunshine.

I think I know what the issue might be with all this warm air and melting snow. Just checked the Bellevarde webcam and it would appear there are volcanos.

You're lucky to have picked this week. Outside of half term, next two weeks are busiest of the season. Unless some serious snow in next week or so the upper pistes will be like Piccadilly circus and there will certainly be queues and there will be no half empty slopes.

First day in Val. Instructor (ESF) found us plenty of decent snow, even some gentle off piste. Pleasantly surprised by conditions. Not sure how it will hold up if it warms up and there's no new snow. Lucky enough to be here next week so hopefully can avoid Picadilly! Instructor was concerned that Les Arcs etc may be bussing people to EK next week.

Was in val d'isere for the weekend, we had a great time. Only gripe really was that fairly rubbish chair lift (mont blanc) that we seemed to have to take every time we wanted to get back to Bellevarde. That was the case for everyone i think so the piste down from it ended up being a mess of stones, terrified beginners, ski's, ski school snakes, pisteurs with rescue sleds etc. Lovely snow over the Tignes side, and generally very empty pistes where a proper blast was no problem. Brilliant job to have so much of it open given the limited neige. Just sad that my off piste forays left me with a gouge of fairly nasty proportions in my loverly newish skis. Grragghh . Embarassed

Warm but pleasant skiing

It is definitely feeling more like 'normal' season now as private schools have broken up and all the tour ops have people in town.

It DID snow in town last night and of course up the mountain... in fact there was a nice cushion in places but basically nothing new open. There was only a few cm's but it all helps.

It is barely dropping below zero even at night and I cant see things changing or any real snow falling yet! However up high it really is pretty good still and although you have to be mindful of black and yellow poles etc showing where there are obsticles (rocks) AND of course the fact that you cant really ski lower down the mountain e.g. the Face / to La Daille / Fornet it is holding up well.

If we don't get any more snow then I should think the lift queues could be pretty big next week as everyone flocks to the Espace Killy to get their turns and of course the normal visitor numbers at this time of the year - we shall see!

So anyway back to today. Myself and my colleague Nicko met at the chalet in the old town at just before 9am this morning - between us we have 8 kids ranging from 10 to 16 and all really nice kids. I took the older and slightly more proficient ones and we had a good time doing the Solaise sector and as usual I threw in some tricks that teen kids love - e.g. ollies etc.

Anyway lunchtime came and most of us headed to Sun Bar which has been extensively refurbished (under new ownership - no more grumpy old shouty man - some of you will know what I mean) and is like an American diner in there. Anyway the plans for the afternoon was to head out for some team skiing (about 50% of us could make it today). Anyway both Clare and I were up there and we got some great video and photos which can be used for promotional purposes. It was a relaxed and chilled afternoon ski around and great to be out with colleagues for a bit of a blast!

Anyway we stopped at the end and enjoyed a drink on the house at the Signal restaurant which was nice of them!

Some boring paperwork to sort now so will sign off.

Someones back garden in the old town that spends much of the year under snow!

It is really lovely (especially with a little fresh snow on the ground) in the old town!

WE HAVE SNOW

It was a pleasant surprise to see about 5cm of snow down here in town this morning when we woke up. It was not particularly cold that was the only problem but we'll take anything to be honest at the moment!

After a quick trip to the post office before work we met the clients as per yesterday morning and unfortunately hit a large queue to get up the Bellevarde side. With a little bit of snow like this everyone is buzzing to get up there so it was a queue to get the day started.

Anyway the problem today was that the cloud level was hanging around about 2500 - 3000m which as you will know covers most of the skiable altitude in the Espace Killy so for that reason we spent most of the day in clouds.

I headed up the Motte and we found some great snow up there and even a little bit of pow on the piste. We broke through one layer of cloud and the vis improved.

However on the way down you get a close up view of the crevasses that are all around the pistes up there. I am often asked how they know there is no crevasses on the pistes.... well the answer is that there are... but they make sure the snow bridges are well filled in and deep enough and the piste bashers carry equipment that tests for this.

The pistes apart from up on the glacier were busy and the snow average at best but the main problem was that there was a few technical issues with lifts and pistes being open (or not as the case may be). So getting back from Tignes took a while longer than planned so we got back a little late.

In there afternoon we had another ski school session but today we practiced our transceiver searches and off piste safety stuff. We did this up the Solaise / Fornet in zero vis for the most part and worked through a few scenarios and it is good to practice these things.

It was good to see an old colleague from The Snow Centre Chris G up the hill today and looking fighting fit to ski.

So Clare is out at the seasonnaires sign up TDC night at The Blue Note this evening so I have been on babysitting duties.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is once again pretty grotty but we will make the most of things.

Red sky in the morning....

I will be quick this evening as it has been a long day and I am really tired. Sorry!

So the weather was threatening right from the off but we made the most of the morning up on the Fornet side of things. It was quite chilly but not too bad.

By lunchtime it really was closing in and the boys had had a fun morning with some nice snow around up high as well as some carving work.

In the afternoon there was 5 of us from TDC working on a VIP Staff promo session and after a tricky start trying to get the groups sorted we had a really fun afternoon. The weather was really closed in and it was snowing hard all the way down into town - hooray! We just lapped around on the Glacier Express and they loved the tricks I taught them!

It was a very rushed couple of hours when we finished as getting hoe, changing, picking Olivia up, bathing her and getting her into bed took two hours before our friend Dave C came around for dinner. Clare made a lovely meal of pork loin, roast potatoes and then home made cookies which was awesome and all washed down with some red wine - fantastic!

Clare has to be up very early in the morning (5.30) as they want everyone up the mountain to work the World Cup Womens DH for 7am! The way my schedule has worked out I will not be on any of the duties until January probably!

So the snow has now stopped falling but there must have been about 10cm of fresh out there which will cushion things nicely but unfortunately not enough to totally bury the stones out there!

mooney058 - I ski on Head ispeeds from last year and most of my colleagues on either Head or Dynastar skis but then again we own several pairs (most of us)... so sort of performance piste skis for the most part.

The Snow has arrived but temps going up

We woke to about 10-15cm in town. Clare was up and out early to get to the top of the Olympic for 7am (being French they were 15 mins late opening the lift to let them up!). Anyway the pressure was on for my to get myself and Olivia ready, to the creche in time and then to my lesson on time so it was go go go. It all worked out just fine in the end and it was fun having Olivia on the sledge in the snow.

Promise I won't pollute this thread with too many pictures of Olivia for now on in!

We had hoped that weatherise it was going to clear up as the temperature was rising slowly after a chilly start. With my boys I lapped around the Bellevarde area and we found some lovely fresh snow up there.... perhaps a little wind affected or heavy in places but great to get the first few pow turns of the season under the belt.

With the fresh snow that had fallen it took the course workers an awful long time to get it cleared and given that the clouds were rolling in and out they never got a DH training run done in the end... but at least things should be set up better for tomorrow as Clare and the other course workers have to be up the mountain for 5am!

By lunchtime we started to hear that there had been an avalanche over in Tignes in the Grattulu sector. Don't really know many details but it sounds like everyone is OK (i.e. not dead) but not totally sure the details of it! Talking of avalanches at the end of the session I was finishing my lesson before downloading on the Olympic lift and there were some kids playing in the bank of snow that goes up skiers right as you exit the top of the Olympic lift.... anyway as they were scrambling around in the snow a large slab about 20cm deep and pretty much the whole width of the face there released.... it was minor but just goes to show that there is already localised instabilities out there!

After lunch I was on session with Dave C who is on the way back from injury and working towards his BASI 3 so we battled through a) a lack of terrain b) no visibility and c) afternoon uneven terrain on the Glacier Express blue run. I gave him some tricky drills to do which he did very well with. There was plenty of technical chat too and we covered a lot of ground in the end - well done Dave.

After picking Olivia up from creche and having dinner I am now truly shattered and it will be another early start tomorrow.

Weatherise it will be warm tonight and into tomorrow and there is not sign of a drop in temperature and anything other than sun now for a fair few days so lets hope this snow is packed down hard tonight.

Lovely snow up Bellevarde today.

A stunning day in the mountains

The day did not start how I imagined... Clare was up to get ready for the World Cup at 3.30.... however the next thing I new when my alarm went off was that she was still at home at 6am!!! To cut a long story short Clare and my other colleagues that were on the World Cup today (Paul and Giles) didn't get the message from the club de sport saying that they were needed at 7am rather than 5am today.... so after turning up at 5am with no-one there they turned around and went home for a couple of hours (well Clare could but Paul and Giles are down in Seez down the valley so crashed in the car for a couple of hours).

All morning I was getting updates from Clare and annoyed updates they were. So they finally got up the mountain about 7.15 and since there had been a very hard freeze overnight there was no slipping work needed. So as it turned out she only slid the course once in total over the whole day - so by the time she got home this afternoon she was cold and fed up.

My day (like yesterday) started with a chaotic couple of hours getting Olivia ready and to the creche before getting to work myself. Like yesterday there was snow on the ground but there had been a hard freeze overnight after the humid and warmer conditions yesterday afternoon / evening and some melting of the snow down in town (a little). It was quite like Spring melt-freeze cycle actually!

I did manage to get a nice picture as the sun was about to rise...

I headed to meet at the chalet for the last time this season and then headed up the Fornet direction. It was always going to be a busy day as everyone wants out on the hill when the sun comes out after some fresh snow (and a couple of days of less than perfect light and weather!). However I knew that the Fornet would have the best snow and the smallest lift queues!

A great morning was spent lapping around up there and the boys learnt a fair bit technique wise so it was a good morning. They even learnt a couple of grabs too which is always a pleaser for teens!

Whilst I was up there I spotted (and was latterly discussing with Henry from HAT) the rare sight of seeing two differing types of avalanche (natural) - point release and slab. This indicates the complicated conditions that are forming in that the warm temperatures are giving way to point releases like you get in the Spring from warm rocks but there also exists on (mainly southerly lips) wind slab... keep your focus people for when the big snow arrives! Talking of avalanches there was someone caught in the Tignes slide yesterday and they were under for 10 mins but were dug out alive! They were taken to hospital and that is all that I know!

Point and slab avalanches next to one another.

I popped home for lunch and a chill out for an hour before Clare got home... after picking Olivia up from creche we went to the Blue Note for a beer and catch up with friends (happy birthday Lauder). I had some parcels to collect from the post office but left rather annoyed when I found out that one of my parcels could not be delivered yesterday so I need to go to the depot tomorrow (only time I can do it in the next few weeks) in Aigueblanche which is just past Moutiers an HOUR AWAY - grrrrrrr!

Clare and I enjoyed a takeaway pizza for dinner and then she crashed and I will be shortly after her.

I am glad that I don't have to go to Geneva tomorrow but a trip to Aigueblanche and Super U in Bourg will mean that it could be a busy morning. The rest of tomorrow will be a family day!

On a slightly different note I know that although the snow is not great in general, we here in the Espace Killy are in a lucky position in general. I bumped into an old friend teaching up on the Val glacier this morning who has come over from the Portes du Soleil with his client as they have not been able to open there yet. I also read in the French press that only 25% of French resorts (the larger and higher ones in general only) are going to be able to open for Christmas week which is pretty sad state of affairs!

Ill sign off for today with this great picture (hope he does not mind me using it) that Dave C whom I taught yesterday took from the top of the Val glacier first thing this morning - stunning!. (He also managed to get a selfie with Lindsey Vonn today too but I won't be posting that!)

Cars - arghhhhhhhh!

Well today felt like a good old fashioned (from back in my good old days - only a year ago) transfer day.

A short lie in until 7.30am and then it was up and off down the valley!

Leaving at 9am felt like a major lie in compared to the 4am starts of old!

Anyway I made good progress although was held up slightly in places, namely between Bourg and Moutiers due to an accident. I was heading to Aigeublanche hoping that I could pick up the parcel that had tried to be delivered the other day.... however frustratingly (they do not have a phone number or website (being French) to say opening times otherwise I would have checked in advance) they were closed.

So I headed back to Bourg and this took a lot longer than anticipated due to the accident which had now meant that the road was closed and a diversion was in place. Anyway I made it back for lunchtime. I spent a small fortune (honestly only a small amount really) on presents for Clare and Olivia in Intersport and then a trip to Weldom to pick up a couple of things. I then hit Super U at rush hour and left many hours later one €300 and 4 weeks worth of food shopping to the better / worse!?

So after unpacking it all and playing with Olivia for a while and having dinner I have finally sat down with a nice glass of red and shall hit the sack soon.... back to work tomorrow!

ARRGHH CARS!

With the fresh snow of recent they have finally been abel to open some more slopes in the Espace Killy including the nursery chair (The Village) here!

Not that i saw any of it but the World Cup racing (Womens DH) was in Val today and it sounds like a long day for my colleagues who were on it.

That is about all my news for now.... on the board tomorrow. Until tomorrow....

I am afraid the snow did not materialise. its been a blue bird day.
Having been coming or the last 10 year's or so, I have never seen it so thin at this time of the year. it's barely freezing so what we had in snow just didn't stick.
The forecast is that the high pressure will be here for at least till the middle of the week. I shall report again.

The World Cup comes and goes under blue skies

Thanks to Radio Val d'Isere for the photo above (it was not Lindsey Vonn's day but she is almost there as the leading World Cup winner of all time) and thanks to trainee snowboard jedi for taking up the gauntlet and posting photos from today after I forgot my camera!

So the day started peacefully as Olivia was still sleeping at nearly 8am after a couple of squawks (as is the norm) at 6am-7am and then went back to sleep but not normally for a further hour like this! Anyway as I was having my breakie she was up bleary eyed!

So yes as TSJ said above it was a lovely day in the Espace Killy and it was a chilly start (minus 10 in town but the temperature was to rise quickly). They had made some more snow overnight and they have managed to open a little more (especially over in Tignes) and then after the safety arrangements had been made they also managed to open the top part of the OK Orange but still runs like the Fontaine Froide are a long way from opening and I hear on the grapevine that they are going to try and open the Face tomorrow - we shall see.

I met TSJ and Mrs TSJ at the creche at the Rond Pont des Pistes and despite a little too-ing and fro-ing to collect missing items from their apartment just over the road from there we were off and up the mountain!

It was relatively quiet up there (for a Sunday and bearing in mind that we expect lots of people from other resorts to flood in from other closed resorts this week) but still there were busy patches! There was lots of kids race club groups up there which meant there were a couple of bad lift queues filled with pushing french kids but there you go. Again there were a few patches up the Bellevarde side pistes but all in all things are holding up well.

I really think that it will be pure numbers that will lead to deteriorating conditions on piste - people = scrapping of the pistes...

Thanks for your kind words trainee snowboard jedi - your doing great and we will get the held-boarding in sometime soon! Hope the kids had a fun morning and the Mrs TSJ felt better later on (and you sleep better tonight).

We mainly lapped around on the Grand Pre working on switch riding (bet many of you didn't know I snowboard too did you?) and it was a pleasant morning.

At lunchtime I had to quickly pop into town to do a couple of errands and managed to spend in Chevallot Clares World Cup lunch voucher from yesterday that she forgot to spend (supplies for dinner tonight actually).... then it was home to a wonderful family Sunday lunch that Clare had made. Olivia even managed to eat the potatoes and bits of chicken by herself without help from us as Clare and I tucked into roast chicken and the trimmings - yummy!

The afternoon was spent doing family bits and bobs, calling the grandparents on Skype and various other relaxing Sunday family things.

Thats all for now folks.... see you tomorrow.

A lovely sunny day

Well what a day it has been... another chilly start to the day after a clear night but the sun soon came through and it got warmer pretty quickly. It was certainly busier up the hill today and there was the odd little bit of snow rage witnessed. They managed to open the Face for the first time this season too so we really are getting back in business now.

The same set up today as yesterday on the board in the morning... however (more on this later) Clare and I had the afternoon off as we were taking Olivia to meet Father Christmas. We worked on switch riding all morning and there was some serious progress from the point of view of consistency and confidence in doing it.... turns are linking together nicely and it looks intentional now as opposed to looking like a complete beginner.... keep it going trainee snowboard jedi and Mrs TSJ!

It was always going to be a beautiful day in the mountains!

trainee snowboard jedi poses for the camera

One of the craziest things I saw up there this morning (and there were a few of them) was a MASSIVE *** (un-named French ski school) ski split going on. For those that don't know what a 'split' is.... essentially you ski down one at a time (if it is being done inefficiently (and there are MUCH more efficient ways of doing it) and an instructor puts you in groups at the bottom when you arrive). I bet there are plenty of readers who have been involved in a ski split. Anyway in the particular example I saw on the Madelaine piste there must have been 3/4 *** instructors from said ski school (one at the top setting them off and the rest at the bottom splitting them) involved and literally about 60 people to split and they were coming down one at a time... it must have taken HOURS to get the split done - what a waste of time. There are more efficient and quicker ways of doing it I am sure.

The split area where people were being split up one by one at the bottom and the view down the piste where the ski off was taking place.

Anyway the queue for the Lac lift to get back down the hill was surprisingly long (and we are not even in New Year week yet!). I did get to ride down the Plan M Red down the front of the Solaise and it was already pretty cut up for that time on a Monday lunchtime and more woringly quite icy lower down!

A few odd jobs and popping into town to the post office and then it was the main event. The new Rise Coffee Bar in town had all the expat families in (including us) for a meet Father Christmas activity. Yes he was really there and he had a sack full of pressies and Olivia was a very lucky girl as she got a pair of lovely purple mittens from him. The bar was buzzing with dozens of families and kids of ages from 3 months to about 5 years.... it was great. However the whole afternoon overwhelmed Olivia so she was too tired for a bath this evening so had an early night instead.

The Rise Coffee Bar is under the Portillo building as you come into Val d'Isere on the left.... very family friendly and run by a lovely expat couple.... great coffee and snacks and even has a license too.... perfect little venue!

Tomorrow more sunshine is forecast so it will be dejavu but after that the weather may change and we are hoping this storm may develop into some serious snow by the end of the week.... perhaps.... just perhaps!

P.S. Hi to whomever it was who pulled me aside briefly as I was just about to get on the Solaise Express lift this morning .... sorry could not chat but I am glad you like this blog!

Well that's another nationality to add to the list....

It was dejavu once again weather wise today. I met at the usual point with the board although there had been some kid issues (tantrums) so we were a little tardy starting but we got there and headed up the Bellevarde side. I made sure we lapped around as quickly as possible before the lift queues got too big and we got some great turns in on groomed pistes. Once again I was a little dismayed about how poorly organised the lift queues can be and how rude some people can be.... if all the seats were just filled up on each chair then there would hardly be any lift queues at all.... just a gripe of mine. At the end of the day you are only going to be away from your friends and family for a few minutes aren't you!

Anyway it was a successful morning and some great progress on switch riding was done.

Lunchtime was a swap around from snowboard to ski gear (thanks to our new office in Snowberry it is a good and warm place to swap gear over).

Anyway the afternoon was an interesting one as I had a lady who is originally from Ethiopia but is now married to a guy from Abu Dhabi (Sp?) where they live with there young daughter. She was petrified and most certainly not used to the cold (in fact she had never seen snow until today) even though it is far from cold at the moment. We made average progress for a first lesson but the main thing was that she had a smile on her face at the end of it and is keen to keep learning so it will be more of the same tomorrow on the Savonettes lift. They really have done wonders in getting that lift open so bravo to the powers that be in getting that open!

Clare is out babysitting this evening and so I have control of the remote control - quick better make the most of this!

There is a possible change in the weather coming through tomorrow so you never know I may have something else to report tomorrow evening!
