Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

That is horrible - only yesterday I was discussing it with someone on the chair and saying I would never do it again as it scared me to death on the traverse. Hoping that it turns out well.

At 17.10 (French time) which it is now, I should doubt there are any. It's pretty much dark, and the chairs are off the Lanches lift (see webcam!)

Try checking mid morning and you'll see they're all open (save for a couple).

MORNING FOLKS

Sorry about the late posting of yesterdays blog......

Firstly the lift statuses....... yes pretty much all the lifts will be open during ski hours - fear not. As chocksaway says those links are the most accurate. To be honest the piste conditions really are very good so there is enough to keep everyone entertained but of course we could always (even in the most snowy season) do with a top up! Of piste however is still a little hit and miss and you have to know where to go to get good snow although there is still some dry pow out there!

Anyway yesterday was a relaxing day..... I am teaching loads today and over the weekend so had some down time yesterday and not to much on the lesson / skiing front. However it was in the afternoon that we did a different mix of things...... Clare, her mum and I all headed to the leisure centre for a swim and some relaxation time. If you have never been there before it is right under the bottom of the face and a weeks lift pass bought (directly or via tour op) will get you one free entrance to the poole (sauna etc is extra!) during the week. There is also a massive double roomed gym in there, squash courts, basketball courts, golf simulator and 'wellness' area e.g. sauna! WONDERFUL facility!

Anyway after an hour or two in there we went to Blue Note for some apres and catch up with some friends..... then we took a wander through 'nuit rouge' which is basically the weekly pedestrian night on the main road, took in the sights and sounds and then headed to dinner at the Pedrix Blanche!!!!! I have never been a fan of that restaurant after, over the years, some upset stomachs and 'lost' bookings when I had previously seen them write it into their bookings book! Anyway they certainly re-deemed themselves and we had a wonderful meal......

After a couple more glasses of red wine it was home and we all went straight to bed.......

Anyway some nice pictures from yesterday afternoon / evening!

Couple of other pieces of local news.
1) Matt and Lou the owners of Blue Note had a rather stressful day yesterday after the owner of the hotel next door accused (via the police) one of their patrons of steeling one of the massive planters from outside her hotel (Ormeulene) on the way back from the BN late at night...... Matt and Lou pointed out that another un-named bar just around the corner had a rather large student event on that went on into the early hours and that there was only about 6 (regulars) people left in their bar in the early hours when the theft allegedly took place...... anyway the police ended up believing Matt and Lou, found the planter in an Irish students apartment and told the lady to stop pointing the finger without knowing more facts!!!!!

2)The person who fell down the cliff on Wednesday..... turns out he IS alive, just, with A LOT of broken things, is still in hospital, he is BRITISH (age not-known) and there is confusion as to whether he fell or intentionally jumped - sure it MUST have been a fall! Anyway you can check out the news report here.

Variable visibility was the theme of the day.

I had a very nice lady this morning who was very nervous with a couple of weeks experience behind her. It was nearly 100% physiological the lesson in terms of content along with some tactics thrown in..... she had good technique just lacked confidence! Anyway after a couple of hours with her she completed her goal for the week of skiing the Madelaine run and she did really well. By the end of the second descent I was trying to get more than one turn ahead of her so that she was learning to make decisions for herself as to where and when to turn!

Meanwhile Clare and her mother headed towards Brev for lunch at the Armailly and they had a lovely day skiing together as well as a yummy lunch down there!

The weather varied from quite sunny to almost a white out at times of the day.... however the Solaise side where I was this morning was better than the Bellevarde side.

I had a pretty productive afternoon sorting a few things out at home and then have just taken Clares mum to the station in Bourg.

Not to much else to report... I am teaching in Tignes tomorrow so will have to leave Val sharpish in the morning to get over there.

Our chalet guests are staying for two weeks hence it is quite nice to be able to pick up some weekend work which does not normally happen! Clare will be doing a mid stay clean in there tomorrow and changing the sheets but she is starting to get quite big with the bump now so is not as agile as she was only a few weeks back!!!!!!!! For those driving to / from the EK tomorrow then the roads should be fine!

RobbyG - EXCELLENT - glad you enjoyed it.... better be careful what I write now!
Neville - that's great - not sure we are actually going to be able to meet though as I have a very full week of lessons over here in Val...... just texted Big Jon to tell him that.... is he crying with disappointment!!!!!! Have a great week with the big fella!

First in the Val Funi this morning as I headed over towards Tignes to teach a couple of scallywags there!

It was a lovely day in the EK....... better temperatures, nice piste snow and NO-ONE AROUND - felt like the first weekend of the season when the slopes are empty!

Anyway I spent the morning with Gary and Rob working on a whole host of bits and bobs and (as I said to them) it was nice to ski with strong skiers. We worked on early application of pressure and steering in short turns - mainly on lovely grippy snow on Trolles..... after that we bashed the Tommeuse bumps - well Gary got a bash or two from them on one particular occasion but everyone was safe! With legs feeling it we topped it off with working on influencing the arc in long radius / carving turns. A good morning.

Lunch was a leisurely affair and I notice that most of the student coaches had left town from the car park so it should be a quieter week from that point of view.

Anyway I spent the afternoon working out some logistics for a corporate booking later in the season, trying to contact one of the 18 people I have (out of 100+ seasonnaires that have booked onto the TDC Val program for this Winter) and doing some accounts. Clare and I will have a very quiet evening in front of the TV and then I am teaching all day everyday for the remainder of this week.

Could not help but notice that there is still avalanche activity going off around the resort - this N-E facing slope - same aspect as Mickeys Ears for example. With the heavy snow that is still forecast for Monday and Tuesday and the temps starting to come lower - more normal for this time of they year we could once again look like a top bet ski place for the January sliders amongst you!

Must dash Clare is getting angry as wants to serve food and eat / watch something on Sky+.

LATE again - sorry

What a hectic day it was yesterday..... I totally ran out of time to post last night so this morning it is.

So I was on the board yesterday morning with a long standing client and SH... it is always a 'warm up' first day especially on their new boards! After their kids had been checked into the creche we were off and did some good runs and reminders of technique up on the Solaise side. J and his wife S were pleasantly surprised with the conditions on piste which remain pretty darn good. It was a glorious sunny day in the EK.

Being a Sunday it was pretty quiet too which was nice.

By lunchtime it was time to change into my ski gear and grab some lunch..... I am using Snowberry to change kit at lunchtimes this week as they will be a bit quieter therefore have space for me to leave ski / board gear and then change at lunchtime - always grateful to them for that as it makes the cold boot syndrome almost disappear - yippee!

Anyway I arrived at our meeting point a good 15 mins early and just as I was arriving so to was my afternoon lesson - non other than our very on SH RichardB..... great to meet you.

We had a very successful session working on piste technique - essentially standing on the outside ski earlier in the turn and a few tweaks to posture..... then we moved onto 'handling' moguls. This was always going to be the tiring part of the session and so it proved so - especially when Richard took a spectacular fall in the Tommeuse bumps..... full credit to him he got himself up, skis back on and back on it again - well done.

He seemed to get a lot from the session by what he was saying so hopefully you will have a great week now Richard!

No sooner had I gotten down the mountain and back home than I had to get on the phone and start calling 18 seasonnaires that I will be taking in 3 separate groups this Winter on our seasonnaire program that starts this week. Chatting re levels and expectations etc as well as collect payment details took a LONG time but it needed to get done as the first group goes out tomorrow afternoon. I ended up leaving a lot of messages so I am sure call backs will be ample this evening!

As soon as that was done it was time to shower and change as friends arrived..... firstly an instructor colleague from the Hemel Snow Centre who is here for a few weeks of Level 3 BASI training (good luck Dave).... he brought round, THANK YOU, some hot cross buns for Clare (she is in heaven) and some Hellmans Mayo for me..... ah the simple things that put a smile on our face when we are out here for the whole Winter! A quick cuppa and cake and then about 5 mins after they left our dinner guests turned up..... JP and Ingrid from Bourg (just got engaged - congrats guys) and then Jake from next door and Becky from our office.

Clare put on a massive feast of roast pork and all the trimmings..... thank you!

We had a lovely evening and by the time the washing up was over and done with it was nearly midnight and I hit the sack knackered.

The big news in town is that it is due to SNOW hard this evening and into tomorrow - watch this space.

Also I thought I would post a few things form the internet of interest for you all.

Firstly this photo was NOT taken in Val d'Isere but instead in Italy yesterday (no-one as far as I know was injured) - don't ever think that tracked out off piste next to the piste is 100% safe!

Also interesting little time lapse video of Val (not all of it is obviously taken in Val):

...and finally video taken yesterday I do believe up at the Fornet by these pro skiers who are in town - pretty awesome:

I recall a 3m crown on a slope off the bellcotte glacier in March 99.... it was about 300 metres wide and about a 1000 deep. Day before I skied it with a group and it was lovely chalky and 100% flat... day later at night with no skier trigger, the whole slope went in a MASSIVE slab avalanche. Imagine the weight of that. Like about 50 football pitches in size.

But yes everyone ITS SNOWING

Today the weather built and built up inch by inch.

Early this morning you could just about see most of Mt Blanc.... by mid morning there was no hope of that.

It took a couple of false starts to get going this morning with a missing lift pass and then a few adjustments to snowboard bindings but we had a good session this morning again....... they nailed their switch riding so the slow start did not matter too much in the end.

By lunchtime there was a few flakes around and there was a stiff wind blowing for sure! It certainly felt like the long awaited return of Winter!

This afternoon I was back on the board again with a client whom I have not taught for several years so it was nice seeing them back in Val!

Some nice changes were made to their riding and they thoroughly loved learning how to carve the board.

Since I got back in this evening I have watched the snow falling outside - YAY but I have once again spent hours trying to call around seasonnaires and I really do not know where the evening has gone.

Sorry folks not to much more to report this end.

POWDER DAY

Yes it was a wonderful day in the mountains...... visibility was good enough for most of the time - occasionally it was a white out but generally we could see what we were doing! It did however snow all day and continues.... in fact it looks as if apart from tomorrow when it will be sunny that we could have a LOT of snow coming our way over the next few days......... I have an 'Off Piste Adventure' group next week so it could be good / interesting / taxing avalanche danger wise - time will tell!

Anyway as mentioned earlier there was about 10-15cm of new snow in town and a little more up top.

Unsurprisingly it was all about teaching lessons today to cope with powder..... and pistes that get bumpy as a result of the fresh snow. It is interesting to see people struggle when fresh snow has fallen on the pistes..... simply people are often over confident when the pistes are groomed and errors in technique do not show up!

Anyway the conditions ranged from:

to

(my nice tracks just off the side of the piste!)

Anyway we had a great time in the powder BUT my videoing skills let me down. I got some good shots of Jason (below) but then his wife Sally..... sorry Sally again.... I managed to press the wrong button first time and then second time of trying my arm slipped and realised almost too late that I was filming the lift pillion and not her - wooops!

This evening I've had a nice long chat to my parents and had a nice meal.

So this snow storm is set to continue all night long, the sun to come out tomorrow before more snow coming in at the weekend.

Anyway folks not much else to report this end apart from this interesting photo of the gazex's above the Trolles piste into Tignes Le Lac - wonder how many times these will be triggered over the next few days!

Rishie - yup I got it in the planner - not long to go!
NE1 - yep they are remotely operated avalanche triggers that can be set of to avalanche a slope. Generally put in places on slopes that need to be 'cleared' early doors. In fact the very first booms you hear in the morning are normally these going off. So they can set them off nice and early in the day so the pisteurs etc can then head up the hill to do clearance elsewhere as they cost a lot to put in. So places like Trolles that will get skier action right from the first lift running in the am. By putting them in they can 'blast' before first light in the morning which all helps gets the main lifts open at 9am!

EXCELLENT DAY ON THE HILL

So we woke to nice clear skies but it was certainly chilly out there. There was a lot of anticipation as everyone wanted a piece of the action.

Anyway I had the same team as the rest of this week and they LOVED the powder all round. (I have made these videos this time public!)

So this morning really was a special morning with GREAT light powder - about 20-30cm all over the place. The pistes were in awesome condition too!

We came down a little early to see how their young daughter was getting on in the kiddie garden with the ESF and she looked like she was loving it and making great progress!

After a quick change at lunchtime it was off for a ski lesson with a delightful London couple. After some general technique work we went into some little powder and they had a ball. We finished at the Folie and I quickly headed home before going up into town for a ski school meeting that took way longer than I thought it would so I ended up going straight to my French lesson still in my ski gear - arghhhhhh.

On the way back I caught the ponies for the Polo all being paraded through the centre of town which was pretty cool to see.

Glorious day up there.

Sally loving the powder.

Bad photo - sorry - of the polo horses coming through the centre of town before the competition starts tomorrow.

In other news there was a head on (non-fatal or anything) crash down near Bourg this morning which closed the road up and down the valley but they got it cleared up pretty quickly.

So Clare and I are off to Albertville tomorrow for our 20 week (late by 3 weeks) scan tomorrow afternoon which will be exciting.

More snow is forecast on and off for the next few days and the weather fronts are very complicated so who knows how much snow will actually arrive and when!

Anyway must dash folks!
