I starting asking my French other half about the tax system, got to the end of the first sentence and said "Never mind..."
Glad you got it sorted anyway.
So excited that the season is nearly here! Steve I bet you're looking forward to your first guests and lessons.
ajc2260626, yes it will be with Mark Warner, the Moris opens this weekend. I've been there twice now and I'm planning a third visit next March. It's a smelly old dump that probably needed doing up 30 years ago but you have the BEST time.

Steve - love the updates! Very excited about the season. I think I will head out mid-Dec to open things up and have a couple of days getting the legs back before the family holiday over NY. Snow conditions looking good, certainly more snow at this time than previous two seasons. Hopefully we will also get the Dec storms to really set things up.

bezthespaniard,
Where are you flying to?
If it's Geneva, take a train to the city centre from the airport (5 minute ride) and have a wander round the old town. It's nice for a walk out and there are some nice bars for a swift half (or two).

TOMORROW!!! UCPA VAL HERE I COME

Another nice day in Val d'Isere!
I had a rather pleasant day all in all. Nearly finished my accounts off.... went for a lovely stroll into town, hot chocolate at Chevallot, chat with the estate agent about selling out apartment here that we live in. Plug for that in a second! Then went to see the midwife and heard the babies heartbeat again (WONDERFUL and then completed compiling the stuff needed to get this place on the market.
It was relatively warm today and certainly sunny. Looking up the manchet valley it is interesting so see that there is already avalanche activity on east and west's facing slopes..... some sluff and some slabs.... obviously this is several days old but it means that there is enough out there for things to be careful of when we get going on Saturday!
So anyway, yes the plug I mentioned above. 25m2 one bed ground floor south facing apartment for sale, central Val, renovated to high standard with all mod-cons. PM me if you or anyone else is interested!
Looking forward to tomorrow evening as there are about 40 people all heading out for dinner to celebrate one of our colleagues birthdays....... at the time of writing the Lodge is not supposed to be open tomorrow evening but we are hoping that Ben and Kieran who seem to spend most of the season in there will be able to persuade the owners to open specially... if not then goodness knows where we will end up.

Wow, an apartment in Val would be my dream! Sadly not be a reality unless I win the lottery haha.
Exciting times preparing to be a dad
Steve, a few pages back you posted a photo of a piste during the summer and asked us to guess what it was but never told us the answer. Which one was it? I reckon it was something like Foret.

nemesys, I'd agree with Joseray. Looks like bottom of Loyes Express chair above it. I also think it was a trick question enticing us to say FACE, but we know better !

Nice apartment Steve, good luck with the sale.
Ahh Joseray! I think I've only skied it once. Thanks for confirming.

that's a shame - I can imagine that made things more difficult, when you can't really commit yourself in the way that you'd like. Hope it's a bit brighter tomorrow.

WONDERFUL
It was really special up there today. Not too busy but not quiet either - it really was a good number of people for the first weekend of the season!
Anyway we woke to a clear and relatively cold day in town with not a cloud in sight!
This morning had a great ski around with holidayloverxx and I was really impressed with how she applied herself on the road back from injury..... pretty impressive stuff all-round!
In fact she made photo of the day!
Pretty content on pretty empty slopes ehhh!!!
I had a quick lunch in town and then it was onto the afternoon session with our chalet guests. Again I was suitably impressed as the girl had only done a week of skiing yet she was flying around the green triangle with ease - well done!
Took a trip up to the top of the Tommeuse - it is so different up there now - loads of space - brilliant. Did not get the chance to head down to Tignes but hopefully sometime this week.
So Clare and I did a FaceTime chat with Gav and his wife (thanks for those who picked me up on that - I really must proof what I type sometimes!) this evening - they have their own private hotel room as Lou will be in there for 5 nights. It was wonderful seeing the three of them! Anyway Clare and I are heading down to Bourg tomorrow afternoon to visit them.
Not much else to report this end really.
More sun is forecast for the next few days but the freezing level is supposed to go up a little so we shall see what happens with the snow quality which is stunning at the moment!

Had a great weekend on the snow. Just got back. Managed an extra day in the sun today as well. Nice!! Only had a quick look at Les Arcs as spent the weekend in Tignes and Val d'Isere for the opening of the lifts and 'Ski and Snowboard free Test weekend at Val d'Isere'. Managed to test 10 snowboards and a few skis, but mostly snowboards this year. I did find a couple of snowboards I really liked so after ten years with my K2 Eldorado maybe it is time to get a new board. I really liked the new Rossignol Soul 7 as well. A great all round ski.
With over a dozen ski and snowboard companies represented this was a great way of testing loads of kit for free. Well done Val d'Isere. I think Les Arcs should have something like this. A really good way to get people out on the mountain for the first weekend of the season.
Friday was a bit of a mix with some sun and clouds, but cold with good snow in the Tignes area where I spent the day.
Saturday was a powder day with poor vis most of the time. But with loads of fresh snow on the piste and off piste, it was great fun even if the vis was poor for most of the day. Started off on the Fornet Glacier, then around Signal and then plenty runs down through the Fornet forest area where the vis was much better. I did manage to finish with a run down the 'Spatula' off piste area to La Dialle in mostly un-tracked powder with good vis before visiting La Folie Douce and heading home.
Sunday was a blue sky powder day. Great for testing all the skis and snowboards. Being based at the bottom of the Solaise lift you had 'The Face' side and the 'Solaise area' to play and still get back every hour/hour and half to change what you were testing. The best thing was they did not mind where you took the skis or snowboards (within reason) so even though I was testing stuff I had some great off piste runs all day.
Today I went for a big cruise covering most of the Espace Killy area that was open. Still good snow to be found and not many people around. A fun weekend and hope to be out again next weekend somewhere for more fun in the snow.
For anyone interested in seeing the photos of the last few days. Take a look on my Les Arcs Winter page in the 'Pre-Season' photo album later. Enjoy.

YAY the boot heaters work!
So yes my DIY maintenance on my boots worked and my feet were nice and warm this morning.... not that I needed them on - just testing them out!
So it was the final session with holidayloverxx this morning and she skied very well... after her injury it won't be long until she is back to 100% of her former self.
It was a relatively warm day, very little wind so very nice conditions. In fact it seemed even quieter than it had done yesterday and certainly quieter than at the weekend. There are quite a lot of ENSA and DDJS groups around training at the moment so you have to keep your wits around you as suddenly a dozen of them will fly past doing longs or whatever.
So today the Face was fully closed off..... the injection has started ready for next week.... I doubt the Face will be open to the public again for at least another 2 weeks.... they have to allow time after the racing has finished for the snow to soften otherwise people will kill themselves!
This afternoon I have been trying to get the last of my dreaded accounts done as I have put it to one side for the best part of the last week..... arghhh but nearly there now. This electronic system (now that I have set it all up and learnt how to use it) will save me time in the future.
So tomorrow promises much of the same weather wise... I have a tour operator promo session (VIP Ski) tomorrow afternoon..... always good fun taking the new resort staff out each year and introducing them to what we do at TDC...... it is great PR for us around town. But apart from that it will be a quiet day at home.
Thats all for now folks - see you tomorrow.

Colder than it looked
Well this morning it was lovely and clear once again and once again when the sun got going it was a reasonably warm day.
I was one of 6 TDC Coaches on a VIP / Fish and Pips and other tour op promo lesson session this afternoon.... we had 25 odd chalet staff turn up and after we did the various verbal splits we set off. It is always difficult with 'friends' like this as they only have each other to bounce off as to what level they are at and there is always some minor arguing about what level they think they are and us trying to get approximately equal numbers in each group. Anyway I finally ended up with a small group of 3 girls and we had a blast.... took them all the way over to Val Claret and back and they improved technically rather a lot. I did my usual and taught a seasonnaires 'trick of the day' at the end of the session - always a crown pleaser...... we did 360's on the snow and they loved it as well as doing pretty we'll at mastering them. As a ski school the better our relationships are with tour operators and their staff the better, as you can imagine. This year as in previous years we are hoping for dozens and dozens of the staff to sign up for our seasonnaires program where we give them a series of lessons at cost price at quiet times of the week - in that way everyone wins! Anyway girls bravo!
The top of the new 'Toviere' lift on the horizon!
After skiing we headed to the Blue Note (which was packed as pretty much ever chalet staff member was in there) for a drink or two and my beloved BN nibbles (humous, olives, bread and salami).
I had to head off a little earlier than planned as I had the first of my new weekly French lessons I have signed up to this season - it was excellent and Kat (our teacher) was very good so I am looking forward to learning with her!
Looks like I am not teaching tomorrow so will try and go and see another estate agent about getting this place on their books for selling. I must also pick up our new uniforms which have arrived in the office - exciting!
That is about it for today folks.... the weather should be turning a little cooler from late tomorrow onwards which will be good for the snow as in places it was getting a little scrapped now! Actually talking about the weather it amazed me how little the chalet staff were wearing today.... I had 5 layers on and one of them only had 1 layer on...... they will learn won't they!
Good luck to our cricketers tonight!!!!!!

Getting colder again!
Well no skiing for me today..... it is looking pretty much non-stop for the next few weeks so I decided to make the most of the last full day off for a long while!!!! Skiing all day tomorrow, then transfer day and then there will be lessons more or less each day through until mid January now.
Anyway as the headline says it is getting colder again in town.... as forecast.
I saw another estate agent in town to get our place on the market and then Clare and I had a couple of hours with Gav and Lou and Mea..... she is rather cute.
Also picked up our new uniform - will try and get a photo of me in it tomorrow but it is good kit once again, orange trousers then a dark blue jacket. The mid layer puff is brilliant too. I am looking forward to wearing it tomorrow.
The plan tomorrow is for the lesson in the morning and then Clare and I are heading to Tignes Le Lac for a Tignes Cuisine lunch (yummy) - so that will be a nice day.
Only piece of news that I had forgotten was from yesterday.... a tow truck carrying a broken down cab on that back of it managed to shed its load on one of the corners...... it meant chaos on the road as they fished the truck back from the abyss over the side. A couple of hours later all was set.
Not much else to report at this end folks..... will try and see as much of the cricket tonight as possible without being too tired in the morning..... but I think the game is well balanced going into the second day!
