Although at the moment, resort level just looks rather wet and rainy...

Well yes it has indeed carried on snowing all day and yes it was rather slushy earlier on in the day.... the ground was too warm for it to settle properly in places but as the sun started going down a few hours ago it has really started to layer up nicely.... and not too windy out there.
I reckon about 10cm of snow almost is now outside the front door which is a good sign.
It is supposed to carry on like this all night and through tomorrow before clearing up tomorrow evening sometime we shall see!
A very boring day for me today..... admin, for the time being, is over.
Quite looking forward to getting teaching for real from Sunday onwards.... the season really will have started by then as the lifts start rolling across the whole Espace Killy from Saturday onwards... lets hope that this recent snow is enough to make the majority of runs and lifts useable!
Talking of skiing.... I am hoping to get my hands on my new uniform in the next day or so.... here modelled by my colleague Giles Lewis.
.
Until tomorrow.....

Will be in Val in just over five weeks. Sitting here in Australia seeing such things is making the completion of my final university assignment ever, all the tougher to focus on.

VD website reports 25cm at village level, 40cm higher up.
With the cold temps and possible top-up to come this week it's a start at least.
Will be interesting to see what gets opened over the next week or so

feef, you'd hope so - I reckon they'll be running them all week as it's forecast to be cold and they'll be keen to get a decent base down and open up plenty of runs in order to pull in the paying punters

Looking stunning this morning! The Val Claret cam is making want to be there soooo badly! Lots of people heading up on the Lanches chair, and a glimpse of the sun shining through the clouds. Gorgeous.
Val town centre is suddenly looking rather Christmassy

Thats what I call a good looking ski resort! (Thanks as always to Radio Val d'Isere website).
It has continued to snow for most of the day.... not too heavily but snow non the less..... and it continues this evening a little. They reckon up to 60cm has fallen up higher and it REALLY feels like Winter now.
The temperature outside has dropped to -6 deg C so it should be perfect for maintaining the quality of that which has fallen as well as allowing further snow making so that by the time the lifts open in a little over 36hours there should be more than enough to keep people going for the first week or two of the season!
The sun did come through it you went high enough today but in general it snowed everywhere lower down.
So it looks like the weather will be cold but clear for the next few days and tomorrow is all systems go as the final few building works are tied up for the Winter months and various cranes get pulled down.
Incidentally i tried laying this morning outside my front door a really cool product called 'Enviro-Snow' which is basically environmentally friendly and highly efficient grit..... it works a treat so shall be laying that outside the front door regularly to make entry easier for the remainder of the season!

They have announced what they are planning on opening from tomorrow - in a nutshell, everything high and the link to Tignes..... lower slopes like to La Daille and the Plan M down the front of Solaise, Santons etc etc etc will all remain closed...... but for opening weekend there is TONNES to ski - probably across the whole EK about 200km I would guess!
|
It sure looks purrdy in the sunshine!
Isn't Santons a crucial (if usually horrid!) link between Tignes (via Bellevarde) & the rest of the Val D'Isere area? If Santons is closed, can you still ski from one area to the other without taking 'Face' which is beyond most people's abilities? I suppose you could download in the gondola and take a lift up to Solaise...?
|

Red Leon, I'm guessing that download is the way. Here in Tignes the Aeroski is opening for that reason. They are trying to keep people on the higher slopes. Many cannons going. STGM have announced that, in addition to the lifts to and on the Glacier, Tichot and Grattalu will open on the Palet sector. On t'other side of the hill Aeroski, Tufs, Bollin (to get you to Tufs) and Tommeuses to bring you home.
Steve Is face closed for race prep?

Well that is transfer day done and dusted.... only another 'don't want to count' before the end of the season.
Fairly straightforward day all in all really. Made it to the airport in under three hours.... their flight was delayed by 30 mins but I knew that all the way there as the rather cool GVA airport app kept updating me all day as to the status of their flight.
Anyway I would have had a long time at the airport chilling we it not for my car alarm refusing to go off in the car park (rather embarrassing). Anyway worked it out one way or another.
Whilst I was waiting there were rather a large number of Snowheads coming through the arrivals door (which by the way has been improved (see picture) and is much more open plan).
Whilst I was in Bourg I stopped at Super U to pick up a few provisions.... managed to get a little xmas tree as each year (I always forget until its too late) Clare takes the tree we have here up to the chalet for the guests... anyway the little one I bought in Super U I managed to leave on the check out - woops!..... BUT I did manage to pick up an advent calendar for Clare (and I) which was a nice 3 month wedding gift.... she was chuffed when I gave it to her when I got back!
Anyway am off to bed shortly as have an early start.... the Winter of teaching really starts now!

Well WELCOME BACK WINTER!
I arrived early at the chalet to take the guests to Snowberry to get their kit rental and then lift passes..... the new puppy is mighty friendly!
Anyway down in town it looked moderately snowy, cloudy and windy up top...... I choose to go up Bellevarde as I really wanted to ride the new Fontaine Froid chairlift BUT as you can see in the picture not only was it REALLY windy up there (no chance of FF opening) but it was driving snow and the engineers were still doing some work on the lift.
Anyway you could hardly see anything and the guests, through their own admission, were most definitely only fair weather skiers. We battled a couple of runs down the top part of Verte before heading to the Folie Douce (along with everyone else in the resort it would seem) for a hot chocolate break. We only managed one more run after that before the guests decided enough was enough (it did not help that one of them did not have goggles therefore could not see a thing) and we headed down.
So here I am back on the sofa at home watching some crap daytime TV and catching up on a few things.
The weather forecast for the next few days is snow, snow and more snow!
BTW Kieran skied past just as I took this picture this morning (seriously) - I think our new uniform looks rather good - even in driving snow conditions!

No transfer day at the giant fridge in Hemel. Just ashame about the views, lack of off piste and only being a hundred and fifty meters long. The photos look great, absolutely gagging to get out there. How's Clare getting on with Euro training?

fair weather skiers indeed! I went to Tignes in October and found on arrival that I'd left my goggles behind on the bed, when I'd been dithering about how best to pack them. Luckily a fellow skier with Inside Out very kindly lent me his spare pair.
The weather looks like getting very wild this coming week; your fair weather skiers are going to have to MTFU or stay snuggled up in the warm!
Please keep up the info on what's going on at Geneva.
