Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Well apologies I totally forgot to post yesterday on what was my first transfer day of the Winter..... it was a pretty uneventful and quiet day BUT BOY what have they done at Geneva Airport - the arrivals parking is closed for the whole of the Winter - it is going to be CHAOS (it was chaos already and the Winter season has not even started yet) - anyway we shall see.

I got back to town and Clare had cooked up a storm for dinner..... a lovely roast. We had a half dozen of some friends around and it was great to actually see people and have a chat and a drink..... by the time we got to bed I was well and truly knackered............ the 'transfer' and Winter season has really arrived.

Anyway apologies for not posting yesterday.

LOVELY first day back up on the glacier this season...... blue skies (a little overcast at times but hardly bad) and temperatures were good. Being a Sunday not too many race lanes were set up but still a fair few. Lift queues were minimal and you can ski all the way down (as we did) on the Double M back into Val Claret... a mix of real and artificial snow - with surprisingly few stones so very good conditions all round.

Inspiring seeing the freestyle moguls guys rip around in the rut line - pulling back flip iron crosses and the like and then continue their bumps run with ease!... May try and get a photo of one of them inverted at some stage over the next few days.

The guys I was teaching did really well as I think the altitude took its toll on them physically and by the end of the day they were pretty tired...... over the next week I am teaching them for I am sure they will adjust. We worked on the fundamentals today..... planes of balance, rot sep etc etc etc..... some good movements and a solid platform for us to work on tomorrow as we develop short turns!

The weather outlook is more of the same until mid week and then there may be a change in the weather - we shall see.

The only thing really to note is the changes in the Panoramic Restaurant at the top of the Funiculaire..... they have spruced it up a little (just a little) but the bar is much better (you have to pay for the toilets now which is a kick in the teeth). The prices for food have gone higher.... it always was the most expensive restaurant in the whole of Tignes (I think) anyway..... so my small salad (basically a side plate plus some), coke zero and a roll (without butter) cost €15 which I think really is way OTT............ but there you go.

Anyway im tired after my first day back on skis so an early night for me...... apologies once again for forgetting to post yesterday...... still getting back into the daily blogness! Very Happy Very Happy

Hi Steve,
Here we go again, I wonder how many pages you will be up to by the end of the season?
The I phone 5 photos look much better by the way.
15 Euros for a salad, roll and coke that's got to be over a 1000% profit, the Columbians will be green with envy with profit margins like that.
Enjoy the snow.

GLORIOUS

It really is some of the best Autumn conditions I have seen for a long time - the snow (for general skiing purposes) is just PERFECT.... grippy and great coverage all the way down to Val Claret.

Dominic and Rachel skied really well again today as we worked on short turns... some good stuff going on.

One of the great things as far as I am concerned about the Autumn is that you catch up with just about everyone in the industry on this side of the Channel.... whether it be national team members, colleagues in other ski schools / other resorts or just people that you meet along the journey through this wonderful industry / life.... today as no exception... good to see Del, Mike, Phil, Jaz, Rupes, Stu, Lee..... the list goes on.

It is quite puzzling but the Autumn this year is not really that busy at all up there.... I do remember in previous years that the queues could be 20-30mins long for each t-bar ride (well it was when I was doing Eurotest training all those years ago). Anyway there does not seem to be that many people around this Autumn!

When we got over to Val Claret this morning we got geared up and just as we arrived at the bottom of the Les Lanches chairs it ground to a halt... no surprises in that. However it soon became apparent that there was no power anywhere at all. The people were being turfed out the waiting area for the Funi.... there was a COMPLETE power cut everywhere in Val Claret........ after a quick bottle of coke (the coffee machine was not working in La Carline - shock horror, because of the power cut) the power came back on and we were able to get up..... but it was a case of crisis averted.

On the way back to Val from Tignes we saw (and I am scanning Radio Val website for more info but haven't got anything yet) what I think was the emergency services PRACTICING a rescue from the side of the dam.... looked pretty epic....... however further up the road towards Val there was a BIG smash up.... not sure what was happening!

Anyway more sun forecast for tomorrow.... see you then.

Chris ski H its an Apple 3GS not a 5 (or even a 4) but glad you like the pics. Lunch today minus the coke (tap water instead) was a much more manageable €10. You would have loved it - the pisteurs were practicing a crevasse rescue up there today.
Pedantica Yep planning on coming over for a drink at the PSB at some stage - several people planning to meet that week. We shall see.

Not my pic but from Radio Val.... conditions looking good for opening in 10 days time up on the Bellevarde... there really is great coverage up high.... just from the resort level it looks not so rosy.

Carving was the topic today (even though Dominic felt a little under the weather and didnt ski after lunch) and some great improvements were made. Dominic had never tried carving before and looked pretty good at it after only a short period of time.

Some of the French junior team were up there doing a Super G today... pretty impressive speeds they were attaining.

The sun shone once again and we are hoping that we may have a little snow coming our way still but there really is no sign of it yet.

Not much to report today.... have a day off tomorrow and will be waiting in for a few parcels that are due.... a couple were due to be delivered today but in France I forgot they will not deliver unless they have a telephone number which I have just spent a couple of hours providing online to various companies. Most exciting (its a sad life) of the deliveries will be a new Sky+ HD box..... a new toy to play with!

Clare has a timed run in Eurotest training tomorrow so she has been working hard on her skis this evening.... good luck!

See you tomorrow.

Well quite an up and down day really...

It was nice and quiet in resort this morning first thing (just a few deliveries here and there taking place)...

Thanks everyone for their wishes towards Clare..... apparently she skied well but unfortunately there were some major problems with the timing system and no-one got any times all day..... oh well as long as that does not happen on the real thing that is OK!

The good news around town was that the Criterium de Premiere Neige World Cup show is coming to town for sure after FIS visited today and were happy with progress towards making the pistes ready therefore as long as the snow does not all melt it should be full system go in a few weeks time.... yippee..... and after all the disappointment of last years cancellation that will be very welcome.

The excitement for me as I said today was the arrival of my new Sky+ HD Box - have been waiting for ages to get around to getting sky+ (yes I know I am years behind the times) but it is very exciting for us non-the-less.

The BAD news today was that after dropping Rachel and Dominic over in Tignes for their 'free ski' practice day was that Rachel managed to take a huge crash. Cutting a long story short she seems to be OK (no broken bones or anything) just very shaken up and likely to miss the rest of skiing this holiday which is a real shame. Lets hope she has a restful nights sleep so that Dominic is OK leaving her to come skiing with me tomorrow!

Going over to Tignes to help bring her back and check-in the Centre Medical etc for a couple of hours reshaped my evening so I never got around to completing everything that I wanted. However Clare and I did manage to go to the Blue Note and see some friends who have just got back to town.... great to see Scott and Becki and Gav and Lou.... everyone was on fine form.

OK folks back to the sliding tomorrow.....

Finally a change in the weather - but it did not deliver the goods - YET. It was a weird mix of cloud, whiteout (a couple of times), and a little bit of blue sky (very occasionally) today. The FIS Super G race was cancelled (not surprising) as it was way too dangerous to run it.

Rachel had a good nights rest so Dominic came skiing and WOW he did well..... the topic was moguls and he worked very well on the drills I gave him and was able to link in the fall-line about 8 turns on the big moguls up on 3-5! WELL DONE DOMINIC.

The weather forecast may be for a little more snow but we shall see if anything comes of it.

Not much else to report really.... one more day with Dominic tomorrow then they are off home.

Dr John - thanks for letting me know - will keep my eyes open.

Finally some decent snow forecast.... there could be a lot of it.... even more than it states here if you look at meteox it is really promising - we shall see.

Anyway last day teaching today for a week or so..... WONDERFUL weather and VERY VERY quiet this afternoon - where did everyone go?

https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=393570654051619

Watched them film this on Wednesday - awesome to see but such a shame that there is not more (any) funding for UK skiing out there.

Anyway back to today.... Rachael had another (of course) day off... she feels much better but Dominic and I had a great time.... we even found a tiny little bit of powder in places and spent the whole day working on variables. He has done SOOOO well considering he has only done 4 weeks skiing... he is getting around the mountain very confidently now.... and starting to ski very skillfully whilst all the time his 'toolbox' of technique is increasing - very satisfying to see!

Not too early a start tomorrow but I shall be going a little earlier as I need to find out how they are going to be working the parking spaces at Geneva Airport since they are refurbishing arrivals parking and it will be chaos in a few weeks time.

The weather up there today was wonderful.....

Transfer day was pretty uneventful........ however by the time I got home last night Clare already had a few of our friends around so I didn't get chance to do blog last night. Another Strictly and X-Factor session with pizza all-round - the simple pleasures in life.

Yea the road was quiet and made it in less than 3 hours each way which is always a positive. I mentioned last week that Geneva Airport is gonna be chaos this Winter given that the main arrivals car park is out of action for 6 months (Grrrrr). It is ESPECIALLY problematic if your vehicle (as ours is) is over 2m high as non of the other car parks will cater for a 'high' vehicle. Any car with a roof box on it is pretty much over 2m high and being the Winter season you can imagine how many cars fall into that category now!

Anyway after some research and asking around I found out that car park P26 is the place to go that is VERY near the airport - 5 mins walk (mostly undercover) and no roads to cross, but will accommodate larger vehicles easily.... the car park is under the 'Arena' exhibition hall place right next to the airport.... PERFECT. See the photo below for the really great rates for parking - BONUS! There were plenty of spaces so I am sure that even in the depths of Winter parking should not be too much of a problem - PHEW. The only downside was that the elevator up to street level was not working which will be a pain when guests have lots of bags BUT I hope it will be fixed soon!

On the nice walk through the terminal I cam across (picture at top) a random model railway exhibition thing.... quite different to see that in an airport but still quite fun.... I know my Dad will love to see the picture as he is a model train enthusiast.

Rachel and Dominic left us the nicest present - really really nice jar of jam and another of nutella type chocolate spread from the 'naughty but nice' shop in town...... just been gorging ourselves on it for brunch this morning.

They are still forecasting a jolly large dump of snow over the next few days (coming off the back of this bad weather the UK is experiencing at the moment). Up to 50cm of snow forecast which will be PERFECT timing before the resort opens next weekend!!!! That snow will also come in time for them to pack it down to make sure that when the World Cup arrives in town in a couple of weeks time the conditions will be perfect!

Anyway the cricket is far too exciting so will finish off here now. See you all later!

Steve Angus, very useful information on the Gva car parking, thanks. What a pain. I have often seen P26 showing "complet" signs. Could be a fair amount of chaos. I am doing my first (of quite a few) airport pickup on 23 December and might explore options on the French side. The departures car park will become impossible too, I imagine, as it's the obvious first option for arrivals. Might have to direct fit folks without stupid amounts of luggage down the road to the big supermarket.

Well this has been the general view of sunny skies around town today..... the ice-rink does not look quite ready though does it. However as I start writing this it has just started to spit with a very slushy form of snow which is a step in the right direction. It has been threatening for a couple of hours now therefore lets hope that this is the start of the 'big' one!

Have had a pretty lazy day - catching up on some emails and watching tv.... but a busy week of admin coming up... boring but necssary!

Getting greyer and greyer out there. As you can see the weather is certainly moving in... over in Tignes is was apparently blowing a gale all day and up on the Motte was snowing lightly all day. There are a few flakes in the air this evening so it looks like this storm has finally arrived.... lets hope that tomorrows photos will show lots of the white stuff - we shall see.

The pisteurs and STVI were all crowding around their 3 brand new piste bashers that arrived yesterday (see the picture above)..... they are parked up near the bottom of the Solaise Express and as you can see there is no snow on the ground there yet for them to actually do anything yet a while!

Now that the World Cup has been confirmed it looks like they have put the grandstands and corporate tents up in double time (before the snow arrives) at the bottom of Le Face..... always a good sign that FIS and the authorities have faith in the arrival of lots of snow!

I often get asked on here by people about recommendations for accommodation here in Val.... well of course the first choice would be our place that Clare and I run, Fresh Chalets (www.freshchalets.co.uk - unashamed advertising!). Of course we only offer self catered (well usually only self catered) these days BUT by the time you include the free private transfer from Geneva and the 1/2 day private lesson (on/off piste on skis or board).... or simply a resort tour) we think we have a pretty good offering.

HOWEVER if we are full (about 2/3 full for this season already) then we recommend Peak Services (James and Ali are lovely guys) for self catering arrangements or possibly Mountain Rooms (google them - they are out there). Failing that or you want CATERED chalet breaks then I think the best Val d'Isere and traditional chalet company out there would be YSE....... as you probably know they ONLY do Val and have a very good reputation.... indeed Clare started her Val career some 7 years ago as one of their chalet girls! In terms of value for money, friendly, flexible hotel options then Le Toviere down on La Daille (just completing a MAJOR refurbishment at the moment) would be our choice. Another flexible option could be Project Ski.

So those are our recommendations for the record..... I am sure others have opinions but I am hoping we don't end up having a debate here about the pro's and con's and everyone chips in their opinions as it is just an opinion and I know all the companies I have mentioned above and can vouch for them. Nuff said.

OK back to crossing fingers for lots of snow please!

Hmmm im sure someone said it was gonna dump all day..... well perhaps it did at the tops of the mountains but there has been sweet f a down here in town. It looked very grim up top all day.... even when I popped out earlier it was pretty windy and miserable down here in town.

Anyway as you can see in the picture the clouds are up there hopefully depositing lots of nice snow.

I spent most of the day doing the dreaded annual Fresh Chalets accounts - boring but its gotta be done.... nearly there..... a few more hours on it tomorrow morning and we should be OK!

Clares massage bed arrived with the courier today... takes up most of the living room.... will need to do some swapping around tomorrow to find somewhere to put it but it can't stay where it is now... in the middle of the living room.
