A long day

I was woken in the middle of the night by the pitter-patter of little feet next to my bed. Oh yes, the little boy could not sleep. So after much deciding what to do to try and allow Claire to sleep, I ended up sleeping in his bed whilst he took my place. But still, I didn't get a great night's sleep, unfortunately.

Despite that, it was still an early start as Olivia headed off to Thien for her first day skiing, therefore we were all up early getting ready and getting her out the door in all her ski gear. It was pretty snowy out there, so she went off with a big smile on her face, expecting a powder morning.

Olivia was to have a fantastic morning skiing the powder on amazingly affected pistes over in Tignes with all her friends. She had a whale of a time for three hours. Meanwhile back at home we had a pretty lazy morning watching the snow falling outside and in total another 10 centimetres of snow on top of the half a metre or so we've had of recent. It means it's looking awfully good out there.

Mid-morning, Clare, Ben, and myself headed up to the school. The new massive wall mural that's spent three years in the planning and painting by the kids around the school and some parents, finally has been finished and was inaugurated this morning with the mayor and other dignitaries there. It was pretty cool seeing all the photos of the construction of it and all the background to the works, and also meeting up with some other parents and enjoying a few free nibbles that the town council laid on. And luckily it wasn't too cold, and in fact the sun was trying its best to come out. A nice morning.

This afternoon Clare took Ben down to see the speech and language therapist down in Bourg and Olivia after a fantastic morning skiing was back home and took a well-deserved chill out because she's been pretty busy at school the last few weeks. She decided, much to my surprise, that she wanted to do some baking, mainly so she could surprise Ben and Clare when they got back from Bourge. So she decided to make these strangely coloured pink cookies but it didn't help that we couldn't find half the ingredients needed in the recipe but luckily they seem to have come out very nice.

No sooner had Clare come in with Ben and we unloaded a large Super U food shop than I had to head out to do another avalanche safety talk, this time at YSE. It was nice going up to YSE and seeing my friends Murray and Christina up there and catching up with them and their little boy Leon, but it didn't help that the TV wouldn't work which meant I had 50 seasonal staff crowding around my laptop, but hey we got there in the end.

So in local news the weather should be fairly settled for the next couple of days before more weather may be moving in over opening weekend and talking about opening it does look as if all ski areas and the vast majority of ski runs will open in their entirety this weekend for opening weekend. The talk of the town is that this is the best start to a ski season since 2012 and things are looking absolutely fantastic with virtually everything open including some good off-piste to be had.

Lucky thing getting to ski powder with her friends this morning!

An interesting mix of weather out there today.

The wall mural is pretty nice actually.

The cookies were quite nice actually!

Glorious weather and getting excited

I slept much better last night but one thing's for sure it's a lot colder out there so I made sure the heated blanket was on full whack all night long. Woke up early this morning as Olivia has to get up really early in order to get the school bus down to Bourg on Monday and Thursday morning so the day started much earlier than normal but it means the day gets going once the kids are out the door a little bit earlier too.

I realised how cold it was as I drew the short straw to take Ben down to the school bus this morning and like complete nutters they all run around like crazy things having a snowball fight and jumping in the snow rather than trying to stay warm and dry as they wait for the bus to arrive but hey rather them than me. But the temperature was about minus 16 minus 17 first thing this morning so I was quite glad when the bus arrived and off they went so I could come back inside for another cup of tea.

I got some admin done, caught up some emails and watched a couple of programs on TV whilst I looked out the window and saw all the snow cannons, as if there wasn't enough snow, going full tilt. So we really are gearing up for a very, very good opening and as you can see in the photo below, Val are officially saying that they're going to have a very large amount of ski runs open. So it really is promising to be an excellent opening weekend.

By mid-morning and about the warmest it's going to get all day before the sun goes behind the mountain, I went up into town to Snowberry and collected my uniform. Those that know TDC well will know that we've been skiing with Planks clothing as our uniform supplier for many many many years now. Going back about 10 or 12 years we've had Plank's but unfortunately due to their sad demise we have had to change and I'm pleased to say we are in Norona gear and it seems fantastically technical, good quality stuff. Once again due to the (lack of) colour options we are in all black but the gear seems very good. So I collected my uniform, caught up with a few people I haven't seen all summer and now they're back for winter and then I treated myself to a sandwich from Chevallot and then enjoyed the sun as I walked back down to La Daille.

I don't have any avalanche safety talks today but the one for YSE last night went well despite a few technical problems and not being able to get the television to work. It was good and if I've educated them just that little bit then I've done my job. The next avalanche talk is tomorrow for Mountain Rooms but this evening I'm going to settle down to watch the first men's super g race from the USA on television and it won't be long until the luxury of being able to do a bit of admin and catch up on television will be a distant memory as we move into the belly of the season. And right now as the sun goes down or starts to go down, coming up to three o'clock in the afternoon behind the mountain, I can feel the chill coming on so it's about time to have a cup of tea and get warm before the evening draws in.

TTFN

P.S. It doesn't look like on the lift and piste opening statuses in the picture below that they're going to be opening much that comes down to the valley floor from up top by the looks of it anyway such as the runs down from the top of Solaise or indeed things like Santons or the runs down to the Daille now. Either they just haven't mentioned the opening but more likely than not they're just a little bit worried that even though the snow coverage is excellent they need a little bit more time for the snow to bed down for it to have full coverage so I suspect that it might be touch and go as to whether we are going to be able to ski down to the valley floor this weekend so keep eyes open for official signs and information boards around town and at the top of those areas before you descend. You've been warned! You can always download in Val!

Simply stunning out there - but very cold

Its set!

Its been the calm before the storm today. The last of the cranes etc have come down, the builders have been frantically clearing up and meantime the first of the skiers have started arriving for opening weekend! I always find opening weekend quite funny as there is a buzz around town and second homeowners and 'relative' locals e.g. from Annecy etc flood in for a couple of days skiing! This year with plenty open it should be better than normal.

The other group of people that have arrived in town are the British Army. Those who come to Val often at this time of the year will know that the British Army do a multi week course here. They normally come about the second week of the season and stay for something like 8 weeks but this year they are coming for the very start of the season and doing 8 weeks out here but taking Xmas away back at home. Lucky things all in all! Anyway they were about getting ski hire and all sorts of ski kit sorted. Carnage ensues on the mountain with them tomorrow!

Meanwhile I had a pretty chilled morning and ticked off the last of the bits like getting my avalanche bag out and checking that all works, changing the batteries on my transceiver etc etc etc. This afternoon I was in town to deliver another avalanche talk, this time to Mountain Rooms and Chalets seasonnaires! Luckily when I finished the train rouge was right there so got home in good time.

After putting the car in the UG parking for the season start we then had a family curry (Olivia back from school in Bourg and starting race training tomorrow) and now the kids are in bed!

Tomorrow we have a TDC season 'launch' day on snow which is basically a ski about and do some transceiver searches and of course a team lunch out. Clare is skiing with Ben and Olivia as I say race training with club.

Well that was one of the best opening days ever!

Its not often we get 'snow', sun and the first day all in alignment but today was that day!

It was a hectic start to the day... trying to get all 4 of us out the door in ski boots on time! Olivia was having a day with Club (she collected this years kit at the day end and its somewhat interesting colours - a lot of white - that might get dirty quickly eh!). Ben was skiing with Clare (and lunch on the mountain) and I had our launch day! At least the sun was shining and it was not too cold.

So headed up on the Train Rouge and it is nice when the season starts that the Train Rouge is so frequent. I got up there in good time, bumped into lots of people always at this time of year bumping into people you haven't seen for six months so lots of chats to be had and then watched the carnage of the people queuing to get their lift passes sorted and a quick walk around the ski test area. There was certainly a carnival atmosphere going on bearing in mind that so many people were here over and above what they would normally be for opening weekend. Lots of people taking skis out to test so very big buzz going on at the snow front meeting area at the bottom of the main lifts.

I did notice how busy it was. The people had come far and wide. I noticed one ski club that had come as far as the Chamonix Valley. So people had come far and wide, and the word obviously spread about how good the snow was here for opening weekend. Of course, most of the clubs from the Tarentaise Valley were there as well, as well as all the Val d'Isere club kids as well. So lots and lots and lots of people from all walks of life, maybe not international travellers yet as well, were in town to enjoy the opening festivities, bands and music playing, and head up to get those first turns of the season in.

After one of our number had a slight problem with their lift pass, we did finally get going at about 10.15, but with the sun beating down and it being relatively warm to be honest with you, it wasn't too much of a hassle to wait until everybody was ready to go. We started off by doing some transceiver searching, which from a sort of internal policy point of view is something we insist we get done before we start teaching off-piste each year, to make sure we're all capable of finding two buried transceivers within eight minutes. So we all managed to tick that off and cross-check each other's abilities on that front, and then after that it was time to have some fun and go and ski some powder. And there was some nice snow up there, admittedly a little bit thin in some places, and certainly at lower altitudes, but hey for the first weekend of the season, very very nice indeed.

It's not often that we all get together with that sun and the snow early season so as has happened in the past we took the opportunity with a professional video and photographer videographer to capture some great photos and videos of our skiing about for use in advertising purposes and videos and social media and it is fantastic to see yourself and get some nice material at the same time!

We're headed to the Folie Deuce for lunch and boy oh boy it has changed inside there. The old gondola lift station has finally been converted into a usable area for the Folly. And this is now where the self-eat area is going to be. And it's a massive room, several hundred metres in size. The only problem was that the organisation for the self-service queue was rather hectic. But as usual the food was really nice in there. It was nice to see how they've rearranged the layout of the building. So onwards and upwards for that. And it was just very nice enjoying a casual lunch with your colleagues.

We finished the ski day with a quiet social drink all together at the Rosé Blanche and then some of us went into town to have a further drink at the Blue Note and enjoy the first nibbles of the season there, which is very nice. I swung by on the way up there to pick up Ben and he had finished skiing with Clare for the day and we had a lovely time up there. Luckily one of my colleagues brought his children along and Ben was able to play some pool and some bobby foot and we had a lovely couple of hours up there.

Meanwhile Clare was at a start of season meeting with the Club de Sport and then caught up with Olivia who was at a friend's birthday party and finally they got back much later this evening and after a quick dinner and then two very very tired children are now in bed and that will be closely followed by Clare and I. First day of the season ticked off but boy oh boy pretty tiring but a very wonderful opening day of the season for the 25-26 season that's for sure.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?
Well that was nice

This morning was similar to yesterday morning in that all 4 of us were out skiing but for slightly different reasons and plans! I must say before I tell you that that I slept so very well. I invested in these fancy in ear ear buds the other day... they can either play soothing sounds to get you to sleep or in my case I listen to a bit of Classic FM. Then when you fall asleep they play white noise to block out any other sounds outside (snowploughs!). Finally they ease you into the day with a gentle awakening set of sounds - amazing.

So anyway it was a nice gentle start to the day and being a Sunday it was eggs on toast to start the day - yum my favourite breakie of the week! Olivia was out the door to get to club and then Ben, Clare and I all skied together and took one of Bens friends with him. Like yesterday it was actually quite warm out there (not Spring warm) but enough to be pleasant and with nothing more than a gentle breeze under a sunny sky it was glorious! Also for some reason it seemed much quieter today than yesterday up there - not sure it was but it felt like it.

We skied the usual suspects up Bellevarde and enjoyed a hot choc at Marmottes. But it was a pleasant and easy going morning thats for sure.

We all rendezvoused back home for lunch and then settled into a pretty chilled afternoon with some homework going on, playing some games, watching the ski racing, calling family back home etc. Of course a little cabin fever kicked in in the evening but the kids are now bathed and settled in bed! Phew! Our friend who is chef for one of the chalet companies had a massive Tartiflette left over so he dropped that off with us for dinner which was super yummy! Thank you.

So tomorrow Olivia is off to school of course but she has training for much of this week. As part of her 'ski etude' training program she gets these extended periods as part of her school timetable where she gets to ski with Club! So this week she has Wednesday to Sunday inclusive of race training coming up! If you look at December as a whole she has 22 days Club des Sports contact time and over the whole season about 100 days... so pretty amazing 100 days or so of ski race training just in this Winter alone! If a typical holiday maker has 6 days of skiing in their weeks holiday it means she has about 13 or 14 weeks of ski race training this season alone! No wonder these kids get so good so quickly eh!

Meanwhile Ben is at school here and Clare and I sort of have that mix match moment in the early season when we are still not teaching too much but have work related snow stuff on - that comes in the form of 3 avalanche talks in a row tomorrow afternoon into the evening around the resort! So it might be quite a late update tomorrow night!

Yea exactly - when it starts there is no let up until the end of the season. I liken it to standing on the diving board at the end of the swimming pool and know that you have to swim the full length under the water and cant come up for breath until your fingers touch the far end.... Youre kicking for dear life and the end seems ever so far away! When you get there you need lots of rest and R&R and then its time to repeat 6 months later! In the time you have been under the water the whole world has moved on. Thats what this job feels like in many ways!

I attended the very first EOSB back in 2005. I started skiing in 1997 and had skiied 111 days total by the time I went out to Bourg St Maurice. PG lived in BSM and was helping out with things, including asking his daughter's ski club to organise a race for us, for which his daughter acted as forerunner. I seem to recall she was about 12 or so at the time. We worked out that she'd skiied more days that season than I'd skiied in total. I did not post a competitive time.

EDIT - Ooops, I started skiing in 1997 not 1977

What a day - dry mouth!

After another decent nights sleep being a Monday morning it was all systems go. Firstly to get Olivia out the door and onto the school bus Bourg bound and then Ben! The normal school bus for Olivia had obviously broken down so they had a pretty beat up old banger of a thing with not any storage space so watching them all get on the bus carrying their overnight bags was somewhat interesting!

Anyway with that sorted I did a handful of bits around the house but mainly rested as I knew that it would be a very long afternoon and evening! So it proved to be. Even though the sun was shining and I could probably have gone up the mountain I decided not to.

I took an early lunch and then headed into town for the first of 3, yea 3 tour operator seasonnaires avalanche safety talks today... its just the way it worked out today / this week. First up was a double talk with Build My Ski. The way they do their training is they have all their resort staff in the one resort for training (thats Val, Tignes and Val Thorens). Anyway the room is not big enough for all the staff to do the training in one sitting therefore the first 20 or so staff up first were the chefs etc and then immediately after that it was the same talk but for the chalet hosts etc (about 30 of them). Blimey I was tired after just that!

So as soon as I finished there I rushed into town to get in the right area for the next talk. However I needed to get some food so popped into Flash Pizza for a pizza in a rush and it was really lovely as usual. Burp!!!! A quick dinner.

Then it was onto Snowberry to delivery the same talk to their first season seasonnaires.

So by the time I finished there and got him I have been on my feet for 4.5 hours talking alone today. Blimey im shattered!

So I got home and saw Ben just before his bedtime and now im catching up on some TV before bed.

TTFN

P.S. not sure what im going to do tomorrow - need to have a good sleep first but Clare is teaching tomorrow (her first lesson of the season).

It looks pretty lovely up there still.

Not as planned

So last night I put 'rain sound' on my headphones to drift off too... that pitter patter of rain is southing I think. Anyway I slept really well BUT I forgot to put a timer on the headphones to switch off after 2 hours. So this morning I woke to the alarm going off BUT crucially the first thing otherwise I heard was the rain sound still... got a hell of a shock thinking that there was a hole in the roof or something. Anyway panic over after 2 seconds and on with my day.

It was a mild morning and night out there so taking Ben to the school bus was pretty simple this morning. With that out the way Clare was out teaching for the first day of her teaching season so I had the house to myself! I managed to get loads of bits and pieces done so that was quite useful.

In local news with the good early season snow and the upcoming skiing world cup the French mens slalom World Cup boys are in town and they will be training on the Legettaz stade and also on the Face over the coming week or so in the run up to the race. To that end they have been injecting not only the Face but also the Legettaz stade so that will be interesting for the kids to race train on when the time comes eh! Not only are the French men going / are here but also the Norwegian and the Swiss too. So there will be a lot of famous male ski racers about the place for the next week or so and of course as soon as they move on the women speed racers will all arrive BUT I doubt Michaela Shiffrin will be coming as I dont think she is going to be racing SG / DH this Winter again! Not sure. If she doesnt come then Olivia will be gutted thats for sure!

When I was in town middle of the day I spotted Victor Muffet Jeandet as well as Clement Noel and Paco Rassat... oh and Steven Amiez is a lot shorter than I thought he would be too! Haha!

Timings meant that as soon as Clare was walking in the door I was heading out. I had a mission this afternoon (it was not to go according to plan). So I have a friend of a friend who comes every Winter. He actually is American and lives in Florida. Bit of a lose connection but anyway again this Winter (well run up to the Winter anyway) he asked me to take his clobber that he leaves in Val each Summer to his new apartment he is renting! He seems to move from place to place as he finds accommodation or not from season to season! However this year it was more complicated as he is arriving later and his stuff for various reasons has been moved from pillar to post and split up into different locations around town. I needed someone else I know to get me access to the various places and with codes and keys etc and moving to the various locations it took a lot longer than planned. It was also the second attempt to move his stuff but the first time a couple weeks back one of his stores was not accessible as a new tenant had moved into his old place and moved his stuff elsewhere.

So anyway finally everything was loaded and off I headed to La Daille to unload. But this is where it really started to go wrong. The tenants who had been in the flat over the Summer had left a couple of weeks back, the place was cleaned and it should have been empty but unbeknown to me and my mate (still in Florida) the owner was in for a couple of days... so there I was standing at his door talking to the actual flat owner and I could see behind him that he was only staying temporarily as all his stuff was stacked up in there... further to that he had 3, maybe 4, huge large dogs! There was NO WAY I was going to get anything in. Doh! So I found myself repacking the car better as Clare needs the car tomorrow to take Ben to Bourg and also collect a food shop and now our car is parked up full of my friends stuff - doh! Hope to get it emptied on Thursday.

Tomorrow I am skiing with Ben in the morning and then in the afternoon I have a staff promo lesson for Le Ski I am running so it will be my first full day on the mountain of the season! The weather should be decent hopefully although there is some weather coming our way over the weekend!

So today I was told by the YSE chalet girls about the legend that is Steve ! Can't think who they were talking about who gave their Avalanche talk ....

I then read this from my apartment this week in La Daille , next door we chatted to the owner the other day , nice chap , 3 dogs from Normandy , getting his place ready for an American chap LOL

They say 3 degrees of separation!

Its been a fantastic week so far ...

I am sure i will bump into Mr A at some point .... popped into Tov this morning to say hi to Magalie , and out for drinks with the Greek Neilson staff at some point .

Val , fantastic as ever and Vallon bubble a welcome Fornet addition .

harvsurrey shhhh you'll make me blush! Oh and yes I know who the American chap is - how funny! It sounds like you are having a wonderful week - long may that continue! Im sure we might bump into each other for sure! Would be apt.

Even though there's no school today, Olivia had to be up and out the door, early doors, for race training and Claire was on the second day of her booking. I slept well, even though it seems to be unseizably warm the last few days going forward. I felt refreshed, which is always a good start to the day. The weather was set to be promising this morning, although there was a bit of a breeze about, and clouding over, as it has done, leading to some snow this evening, but nothing in huge quantities.

So the plan was that I would go skiing with Ben even though he was a little bit reluctant this morning as he's skied quite a lot over the weekend and has had a couple of full days at school but nevertheless we got going and got out the door and enjoyed some lovely laps from the folly down to La Daille.

We headed into town as I was meeting my afternoon lesson up there, which gave Ben the opportunity to pop into Bricoval, the hardware store, because he was desperate, being Ben the boy he is, to look at some of the shovels and digging apparatus, which amuses him so much in the shop.

Somehow I managed to drag him out there without spending anything. So we retreated to the Sun Bar, Hot Chocolate, and played a game. Before his sister, who had finished race training, came and accompanied him back to La Daille for lunch, before Clare came back herself a little while later. It is nice that kids getting to the age they are now that they can take the Tran Rouge and other buses by themselves a bit more and generally pop around town seeing friends on an ad hoc basis pretty much in a safe environment.

I was back to my usual haunt personally for my lunch and that is under the sun bar but in a change from what I have been doing I've invested in a nice thermos flask. This morning I managed to christen it with some yummy vegetable soup which was actually really delicious and I'm hoping that the changes in my lunchtime repertoire will make it a little bit more exciting packed lunches this season.

I did my first lesson of the season this afternoon, which was a group of seasonaires from the tour operator Le Ski. They were intermediate, but a really nice group of five, with various experiences from different corners of the world. We headed up Belvardde, and generally spent our time on the Green Triangle, working on the fundamentals, although the weather was creeping more and more in as the light went flatter and flatter.

Working on the fundamentals with this group really reminded me of how a few simple changes to posture, where your weight balance is, and how to actually turn the ski can have such fundamental and beneficial change to your skiing. So a little bit of input led to a great output and there were lots of smiling faces. The smiling faces certainly got bigger when I showed them how to do a bit of backward skiing and then they saw me do a kick turn, so that too, and there's some few laughs but some wonderful, wonderful, wonderful smiles. So I would say a very successful afternoon. It certainly clouded over and got a lot colder, so by the time we finished there were a few cold people about. Some had to head back to Tignes, others back to town, so we finished the lesson at the top of Belvardde and I was able to ski home, which is always a nice thing to do.

Olivia had a friend around so it was pretty peaceful when I got back as those two were playing in Olivia's room and doing tick-tock dances and at the same time Claire was down the valley taking Ben to the speech and language therapist although when she got back up with a very large shop it was all action stations to get that put away to eat yummy dinner of tartiflette and then get the kids into bed.

Tomorrow I should be finally getting rid of all this stuff that's in my car from the false move yesterday. I was also supposed to be doing a few more promo lessons over the next couple of days but for various reasons those have been cancelled, which is some ways no bad thing as I'll be able to burn the midnight oil and watch some of the cricket tonight and see whether England can actually string together a few good sessions of sanity and get into a winning position before throwing it away again. Hopefully not.

Happy boy
The French team (and Norwegians and Swiss but here Clement Noel in the middle warming up with pole over head and in the other part of the picture Victor Muffet Jeandet in Orange helmet) warming up before race training on the Legettaz stade.
The weather moved in quite a lot this afternoon but I dont think it will produce much snow!

School boy error but the tech came good

So there I was last night tucking into a 'cosy' night on the sofa.... luckily its a very big sofa so as long as a single bed and very comfortable. The aim was to set the alarm early so I could get up and watch the toss and build up to the cricket starting and then of course watch it from the sofa (hopefully without falling asleep again). It all went according to plan and the tv was off early (last night) and all was set.... the alarm was set, oh yea.... but then whoops I forgot to actually turn it on.

Basically I woke having had a great nights sleep about 5 mins before my alarm would normally have gone off... having missed about 90% of the first session. WHAT A plonker! So basically I slept on the sofa for no reason. Anyway if I had set that alarm and woken up, after the first 5 minutes I would have probably have thought I was bad luck by the review of the first 5 minutes of the game!

Anyway all good it happens.... ill be doing the same tonight just remembering to turn the alarm actually on. Doh!

So anyway Ben was off to school, Clare was helping with Bens school sport this morning which was a session of ice skating so I pretended to do things but actually watched the cricket mainly! Go on Joe Root!

Meanwhile it was quite mild out there and slightly overcast. There had been about 5cm of fresh snow overnight. Quite a pleasant day all in all! I had some bookings to sort out so I sorted that too. At lunchtime Olivia was back from club and had an hour or so before sport this afternoon. Ben of course was at school. With Olivia out to do general sport (ie not skiing this afternoon but Badminton with her club friends) and Clare doing some bits at home I took the opportunity to head up the mountain. This was mainly to do the recording of my weekly snow report but also to try out my 'new' drone. I say new but its second hand to me from someone I know who really looked after it (obviously). Its a pretty decent DJI Mavic Pro. I had practiced with it a couple of times in the Summer but this was the first time in Winter. TBH it was ages since I last used it so had to read all the instructions again.

The actual rules and regs about using a drone on the mountain etc im not 100% sure about but one thing was sure I got away from people and made sure I was well away from any lift lines etc. Of course its all a steep learning curve but I got some footage. I was keeping my ears open for any helicopters but was pretty sure non would be about. I basically hung up near the top of the stade bonnivie which was perfect.... youre on an elevated position above the lift lines up there, nobody about as the Mont Blanc chair and stade drag and also the snowpark - non are running yet.... so basically an ideal place to be. Anyway I got some good footage so will try and do some editing together! Not sure how good it will be but cant be too bad! Haha.

After all that I headed home, Olivia was back from sport and doing some homework and that was closely followed by Ben. A family meal of spaghetti bolognaise and with the kids in bed it will be another night on the sofa!

Tomorrow nothing major planned but maybe ill try and edit some of the video together... I should say videos as have about 10 mins of footage from various angles over the Marmotes / Borsat sort of area.

Look forward to seeing the drone footage. I have the same drone, its really good! Top tip - make sure the home point is set before you do anything otherwise you may have a long trek to retrieve or could be a could also be a long wait until spring for you! I learnt the hard way.

Val d'isere website has some really good info on what you can and can't do and where. Looks like there are a few no fly zones particularly around the Grand Motte, Solaise and the Villages. Looks like where you were either has no restriction or just a height level for your size drone.

Not familiar with French guidance but there is a chance your drone falls under the weight limits anyway, in which case I think its just the no-fly stuff you need to be aware of.

therock - I posted a short CapCut AutoCut edited clip on Insta this pm... its about 15 secs long but it was auto edited of some of the footage. Its also been used on TDC insta so @SteveAngusSnow and / or @TDCski on Instagram stories for both and you will see it. Its not bad for a first attempt and letting AI on CapCut edit it for me and put it to music!

Yes I need to relearn things like setting the home point etc. TBH where I was I was literally the only person within hundreds of metres and I stood out like a dot on a white background so I could visually see where I was using the camera. Anyway will re-learn thanks!

But again thanks re the link to the Val website - had no idea that was on there - will read up! Thank you.

Was it worth it?

Well I remembered to set the alarm to watch the cricket this morning.... pity the Root and Jof show did not go on much longer but hey ho. But then I thought Englands bowling was average at best... just not enough consistent line and length from anybody really and there as not much threat. When the chances came they didnt seize them! All in all Id say the whole day drifted too much and Australia played the upper hand the whole time. To be honest this whole series could be done and dusted in Australias favour by lunchtime tomorrow but if England have 2 good sessions then it could put England in a position where they could win the match (bearing in mind Australia will bat the 4th innings) but I dont hold that much hope yet a while. Im on the sofa again tonight to wake early.

So this morning once again Olivia was out training with club... it was a lot colder today mainly as there was a breeze and not much sun about (so im told) unless you went high! Olivia and plenty of others were up the Fornet to get high above the clouds. There was only about 1cm of fresh in town so it certainly was not a powder day.

Meanwhile Clare was finishing her week of lessons with her clients and Ben of course was at school.

I pretended to do stuff at home but really I was very lazy and watched the cricket. By lunchtime Olivia was home (she was cold) and Clare too. Olivia mixed up some homework with making some Xmas decorations. I caught up on some emails and did something that I thought was going to be a 2 min job but turned into a 2 hours job - changing the bladder and drinking pipe and insulating sleeve on my in sack water source. It took ages as was a lot more complicated getting the connecter changed. It did not help my hand slipped and I ended up with red claret everywhere so that took a while to clear up and stop bleeding - whoops!

Anyway this evening we enjoyed a family meal and everyone is having an early night... im just watching the Super G from Beaver Creek then off to sleep!.

Tomorrow is the last day of leisure before the season REALLY kicks off... starting with a 6 day booking with the Ski Club of GB and then after that its more or less back to back teaching all the way through until January! So forgive me for not being too talkative.

At least the weather is good!

Well the less said about the cricket the better! I have spent half the day on various WhatsApp groups im on moaning and lamenting so ill make this a cricket free zone! Lets hope the ski racing on TV is good later.

So yes it was all systems go from 0700 this am.... as Ben needed to get to his first day of the season with club and Olivia has a full day. Clare took them up as she needed to speak to Bens coach. Since I am starting a week with the SCGB tomorrow I took the opportunity to have my Sunday breakie treat of eggs on toast - yummy! It means the kids get their treat of nutella on toast (well baguette actually) as well which gets everyone in a good mood!

The weather outside was doing weird things this morning.... at 0700 I thought it was going to be lovely and sunny.... by the time everyone was heading out the door it was a snowstorm and then at 1000 it was back to wall to wall sunshine again! Doh!

Anyway I got ready for tomorrow with all my gear, packed my off piste pack and various other jobs and had one eye on the cricket. So much bits and bobs I needed to get done so it was a decent morning!

It was my turn to head to town and get Ben but with some luck I bumped into him and his group about the get the bus back from La Daille into town - so that was a quick and easy pick up. Yay! It had obviously been a cold's morning especially at altitude as I could spy from the window most of the club groups heading to the picnic room at the bottom of the La Daille gondola mid way through their sessions this am... this room would act as somewhere to warm up and have a snack too! Ben told me at lunchtime there was a decent amount of wind up there too.

So Olivia was back for lunch with a friend of hers before they were skiing again this afternoon. Ben was obviously back too and it was the usual couple of hectic hours serving lunch, washing up and getting the kids back out the door.

Ill enjoy the last couple of hours of peace then the evening routine will start before having an early night and so it starts properly tomorrow.

Yes stay high tomorrow and will be moist snow up high and rain from mid mountain down. I’m with SCGB off piste all week (or so my booking details suggests it’s off piste yes).

Hey, I’m heading to Val D’Isere this Friday, will ski sat-Tuesday 4 full days before heading home. Anyone out there to report on the snow? Some worryingly warm temps this week, but snow in the forecast possibly, along with a cool air return on Thursday - Friday. Cheers
