Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Last update of the 'Summer'..... back to Val next week...... YIPPEE

Yes the 'Summer' season is over and the big pack up has already started. Excited about heading back home.

So yes we get back to Val next Thursday and straight (well almost anyway) back into teaching.... Clare is Eurotest training (very last part of her ISTD) from the 12th November and on the 17th November we welcome our first chalet guests of the Winter who will be coming out for some pre-season training (we'll drive over to Tignes each morning). Not long after that it will be the official season opening weekend, then the World Cup..... and so it starts again.

All my new kit for this Winter has been arriving..... new Head ski boots (liners are being sent direct to Val so will need to get that sorted before the 17th November!), have a new (Ortovox S1+) transceiver this Winter too along with thermals etc. The really expensive year (new skis, snowboard, bindings etc etc etc) happens (next) ever other year... but still lots of goodies to get excited about.

A couple of people asked what happens to the gondola (from the wedding) now..... well I am about to 'winterise' it, i.e. wrap it up in plastic, and whack it in a shed at Clares parents house for the Winter..... I suspect it will either a) stay there until we have a garden off our own and it can become a kiddies playhouse or something like that / smoking shed!!!!!! b) someone offers to buy it (we are interested in any offers to buy the gondola - see photos above..... so please spread the word) or c) I have a few contacts in the business who have indicated that they may be able to use it at a ski show in the future!

We shall see.

As far as the table centres are concerned..... they can stay with the gondola (bar a couple that we are taking for decoration).... sure someone will come up with a good idea at some point in the future (or they could be sold / rented out with the gondola I suppose!).

So this month ill start by talking about Val d'Isere and the Espace Killy and give my other news at the end.

From this...

to this....

in only a few short weeks.... WINTER IS HERE.

There have been the normal small town events and activities but really being the Winter season everyone is getting their final little bit of downtime before the season and the chaos really starts!

In case the snow doesn't arrive until late on (like last Winter) then they have been busy making a solid base - here the snow being laid onto the Glacier Express run... the best blue run in town!

The animals grab the last of the goods before being moved indoors / down the mountain for the Winter months...

Meanwhile the training up on the Grand Motte glacier over in Tignes continues apace.... it is such a great time of the year to ski up there as you see some AWESOME skiers and riders busy training away.... here Anémone Marmottan (a Val d'Isere Club des Sports graduate) gets ready for life on the World Cup this Winter!

So the main message from Val d'Isere (thank as always to www.radiovaldisere.com) is that snow has arrived and we are on track for a great season; hopefully!

Personally I have had a busy month.....my birthday last week was fun as Clare and I went to a show in the west end and had a lovely lunch and day out (thanks Clare) and I have been extra busy at the Snow Centre in Hemel teaching away.... a few more sessions to go and that is me for another Summer there.

I also helped take a boat from Gibraltar to the Canaries as Clares' parents have decided to sail around the world and needed to move the yacht to the Canaries in order to start the 18 month expedition..... a great 10 days (5 non stop at sea) and some lovely (if slightly too calm to sail properly) weather.... a great final piece of R+R before the Winter kicks off...... a selection of photos below.

Leaving Gib....

.... the typical view for days on end at sea.... the Atlantic looking a little less fearsome than its reputation.... still a mile of water below us!

A lovely (one of three we had in total) pod of about 100 dolphins came alongside to ride the waves with us for a few hours.

The multi purpose is HUGE!

Arriving at Gran Canairia we realised that it was a MASSIVE cruise destination!

One of my big jobs when we got there was to spend about 3.5 hours up the main mast cleaning, polishing and doing minor repairs...... awesome views up there...

FINALLY you will all be pleased to hear that I have finally managed to get my UK registered iphone totally unlocked so should be able to not only take pics this Winter easily on it but then upload them so that the photos here on my blog will look sharper than ever before...... I know some of you will be happy to hear that.

So next time you hear from me Ill be starting my daily blog on here again..... probably Monday 19th November I should think...... until then.

Sorry rob@rar, but this thread showed last season that it was much better to have a Val d'Isere thread and a different Tignes thread in the same way as we have a Les Arcs thread and a La Plagne thread for the paradiski. The conditions in Tignes can be completely different on the same day to those in Val d'Isere. There are some big mountains between the two places. It was great last season to have two threads so you could read about the area you were visiting. Often when someone goes to Val d'Isere they do not go to Tignes on the same day and vis versa. Look at how many hits this thread had last season. Very Happy

Like I said, time to have a new thread for Val d'Isere 2012 / 2013 and make both places different threads. But it does need someone that is in val d'Isere to be willing to post stuff.

There are about 11 threads for Paradiski - I think even different ones for 1950 and 2000!

Best to have all the EK stuff in one place IMV but perhaps that's asking for cats to be herded

Not planning to start a new thread.... the whole point is that this is not a report on snow conditions per se but just me reporting on a daily basis what my experiences are in the EK (whether that is Tignes or Val (or both) on a particular day)........... people have said that it is nice being able to view the thread as a sort of daily diary...... and of course if others chip in with their photos and experiences then that is fine. Again if someone wants a specific Val / Tignes thread then fire away but I plan to keep posting a daily diary on here (probably starting Monday 19th November)..... I have been doing the monthly roundups over the Summer to reflect that it is a reflection on the 'view from Val and Tignes......' - take it how you like!

Steve Angus, thats fine by me as well if you are going to keep this going as it was very useful last season to see what the conditions were like before we came up your way. I am just wondering about the number of pages. Some good stuff tends to become very hard to find with so many pages. That's the main reason why we start a new thread for each season in Les Arcs.

I look forward to seeing your pics of the new snow in val d'Isere. Very Happy

I'M BACK....

Have decided to start the blog a little earlier than planned as I am getting so excited by all this snow.

Have not been up on the hill yet but the last week has mainly been spent driving and unpacking and settling back in to life back here in Val.

There is a healthy amount of snow for this time of year and the peaks (as you can see) are starting to look good but it will take a few more days before we are able to get excited about snow coverage on the ground here in the Village.

Quite a few changes in town over the Summer period... mainly building works but ill talk about these as this week goes on.

Our first guests of the Winter arrive on Saturday therefore most of this week is an admin week whilst Clare is up on the Motte over in Tignes putting the finishing (hopefully) touches to her Eurotest preparations.... about a month to go til the big day so we shall see!

Hope everyone is happy by the new camera - my iphone... seems to take pretty good pictures even if I say so myself.

Another sunny day in Val... looks like it will stay that way all week with a reasonable freezing level height which should mean that the quality and amount of snow that has fallen up high should stay put whilst down here in the valley everyone runs around like crazy trying to finish the remainder of the external works that have to stop when the season starts on the 1st December.

Talking of building work.... there has indeed been a fair amount of it over the Summer. Perhaps the biggest single project is the collection (looks like it will be 7 when they are all finished) of chalets that are being built just opposite and down from the primary school on the back road. Le Graal nightclub will have new neighbours. Anyway as you can see from the picture there has, and continues to be, a huge amount of work that has gone into this plot of land. I would suspect that non of them will be ready for inhabitation this Winter but we shall see.... they look nice though don't they!

Other work in town is the complete refurbishment of the Toviere hotel in La Daille.... the whole front is under total refurb and looks like they have both extended in sideways and forwards a little..... still lots of work to do there!

The planning application has also been posted up on the side of Cygnaski building here in the centre of town..... writing is a little too small and messy and quite high up on the side of the building so had problems reading exactly what is says, but something about 19 apartments or something going in there..... over 1000 metres square of accommodation.... that will be interesting to see next Autumn when we get back!

Another sunny day in Val and the weather is still forecast to remain just about freezing during the day and well below at night (for this time of the year at any rate!). Sorted out (I think) my season pass today, and the one for the wife so that is another job done.

Our mains water finally came back on after 24 hours being without (it is amazing how basic amenities are missed when they are not there!).

I spotted a few more building works going on.... looks like a few more (see picture above) chalets going in behind the Barme de Lours Hotel (as you can see in the picture) and in the other pic below you can see some (not sure what it will be) works going on right at the bottom of the Face.

They were doing the final bit of testing of the Olympic lift ahead of the season and it was running for a while as the final few checks were carried out.

One final piece of sad news to report and that is of the death of a local who worked at the Tsanteleina Hotel in town.... his car left the road just after leaving town going towards the damn and apparently plunged down towards the dammed lake... some 30m or so! Hopefully 2012 and the number of deaths on that road will not be matched in 2013 or anytime after that!

Anyway thats all for now folks.... see you tomorrow.

Ha ha ha. Steve Angus, will be along shortly to explain proper like, but I believe it is how they spread the pressure of the snow over the concrete of the tennis courts to stop them cracking under the weight during the winter.

Status quo and not much new to report here in Val....

Lovely sunny but fresh weather continues and they are now hoping for a few flakes falling late Saturday into Monday... we shall see.

Back here the final few touches to the Fontaine Froide chairlift continue. In the picture below you will see the chopper lifting the chairs up to the top of the Bellevarde to be placed onto the cable (now presumably as the chairs have been sitting in the open air La Daille carpark for the past week since we arrived). I don't know why these can't be loaded into the funiculaire or Olympic lift or even driven up there to save on costs as it looks to me as if each chair is being air-lifted one by one.... but there you go. If lift pass prices shoot up by more than inflation next year then ill be having words!

The other thing I noticed today when I went out on errands was that the Cygnaski over the road which was run by Mark Warner as one of their Chalet Hotels here in Val for the past X years (as long as I can remember) and which (as widely reported here on SH's earlier this year) is not being run by them this year had loads of Brits (no branded uniforms or anything) unloading about 3 van loads of stuff into the basement creche area of the Cyg....... The curtains for the dining room are still all closed up.... it looks to me (spying on the what was coming out of those vans) that they may be trying to set up the bottom area as a kids area / cheche area????? I am puzzled... maybe they have made an arrangement with the owners to set up the creche only for this Winter in the building or something...... WEIRD.... will report more as I hear anything.

Thats all for today folks.

Took a walk to the Post Office this morning and came across this thing that has been built over the Summer.... some sort of a band stand.... but like the other works there is stuff still to do before the Winter starts and external work has to be finished! The only question I have is what are they going to do with the stalls from the markets that normally operate on this bit of ground (usually Monday's).... the market was overflowing at the seams anyway but god knows what they are going to do now! We shall see.

So first transfer of the Winter tomorrow.... not too early a start and the roads should be not only quiet but not too much traffic either.

Clare and I are inviting around several of our friends for a 'Strictly' and 'X-Factor' Saturday night do tomorrow night.... its something we always try and do at this time of the year.... looking forward to seeing people that I have not managed to catch up with yet a while this Winter.

Anyway not too much to report today.... blue skies and sunshine once again.... a couple more days and then we may get some cloud cover but no snow in store yet.
