Rude awakening but it got better

With the need to get the kids to ski club this morning but not skiing myself (Clare was working this afternoon - well had supposed to be anyway!) I knew I would not get a proper lie in but as I think I might have mentioned before on here we are having issues with our electricity supply on the new house. Basically the electrical 'bandwidth' is throttled and since we had the place refurbed with things like UF heating we keep exceeding the limit of what we currently have (we are trying to get a lift in the amount we can use at the moment!). Anyway in short Clare turned the oven on when she first got up this morning and blew the circuit.... this is not a massive issue as I can reset it easily enough but I was fast asleep when Clare came up to tell me and knowing what a rush it was going to be this morning I jumped out of bed and went straight to reset the system. Its outside too so a nasty wake up call if ever there was one.

In trying frantically to allow Clare to get the breakfast sorted yet keep some heat going I managed to disconnect one of the thermostats which didnt help matters. Argghhh it was a manic start to the day as all the sockets in the lounge for some reason kept tripping too afterwards. Blimey what have I done. I then had to get Ben to club for his skiing meanwhile Olivia had a fitness day.

So by the time I got back about 0930 I still had not eaten breakfast and my todo list of the day was longer than when I went to bed last night! Doh!

Luckily I have now managed to sort the thermostat out / sockets and everything seems to be sorted now thankfully. Phew.

The other big jobs I got done today was connecting up the surround sound / sub etc system and did some work on my dads broken chair.

Kids coming and going from skiing and sport was the other action for the day.

Meanwhile outside the snowstorm raged all day long with high winds and thick snow falling. It is due to continue for the next 24 hours and what an early Xmas present it is as it just keeps on coming. By the end of tomorrow we could have a LOT of snow and a HIGH avalanche risk! Hmmm we shall see!

Another week and another week of not too many lessons, xmas and final few jobs to sort out here.

I think by this time next week just as peak, peak season starts ill be able to sit back and realise that the Winter has properly arrived!

Cold and windy

The temps have really dropped and coupled with the wind it was a very cold start to the day. Brrr.

In a way it was a bit of a bonus as my am lesson took one look out the window and decided it wasnt for them so it opened up the day for me nicely! With Ben starting at 1000 and Olivia making her own way up there I took Ben up.... boy it was quite a blizzard going on. On a morning like this you get people splitting into a few camps.... 1) hopelessly blind and / or optimistic that things will open on time 2) press the snooze button and dont bother or 3) just get some skiing in anywhere you can find it... so as usual the numbers of people around the meeting area were huge.

Anyway it was pretty cold and chilly but I was pleased when Ben got off with his group and I could attempt to get back to the warmth at home and crack on with jobs. However...

We had had a good 50cm of fresh snow and 70cm in places and with the wind and more to come during the day it was action stations around town to get the place cleared up. When there is that much snow the diggers and snowploughs are working overtime and there are mounds of snow etc everywhere. It didnt help that there was broken down car that had obviously been there overnight right on the roundabout by the big Intersport. Anyway 6 buses went up into town whilst I was standing at the Artic Cafe stop waiting to head back to La Daille before one turned up and you can imagine how rammed that one bus was - doh! So ultimately it was late morning before I got home and out of my Winter clothes!

I got some bits and pieces done before Olivia got back from skiing and she had the afternoon off. Ben was out with club all day and Clare working too. So Olivia and I watched some TV (ski race from Alta Badia), she did some homework and I got some other things done before gearing up again for Ben pick up this afternoon - ah yes it all takes time!

It has been a pretty lazy day all in all really but tomorrow will be busier thats for sure and the sun is supposed to shine tomorrow - yay!

@Steve Angus, Went for option 2 today Very Happy
Excuse was food prep and christmas wrapping had to be finished.

The bus situation in town has been dreadful the past few days, it took 4 buses before we managed to crush on one today, ice spikes on Mr Muppets crutches eventually had to be used !!

muppet - good excuse but hope Mr Muppet was up on time doing his rehab physio!!!! Yea re the bus situation - really dont think they thought about how it was going to work having the 'extra' stop over the road from you there now this year. TBH its all a bit chaotic that new bus station. Clare was saying that on Saturday about 90% of the bus was taken up with tourists and their luggage etc.... meant the bus took ages at stops and there was nowhere for the masses to go. Perhaps they'll see the light and increase the frequency of the buses!

Cold and sunny

Today was the first real test with both Clare and I teaching AND both the kids needing to be gotten to ski club so it was all systems go once again from 0630 when the alarm went off.... the room thermo once again showed it was COLD. Brrr!

Anyway everything seemed to go according to plan and I was at the meeting area dealing with Olivia getting her skis from the store and Ben been seen off and watching the expectant hordes appear. The queues were horrendous and with a slightly delayed opening the queues got bigger and bigger!

There had been two avalanches yesterday - the worst whereby a father and his two teen boys got caught on the spatule yesterday lunchtime (what were they doing in such a place at that time of day on an av 4 day I dont know!) but all got out OK thankfully and the other on the Super S!

Alas the pisteurs still had some clearance to do today and they heli bombed some of the inaccessible peaks with some great results.... check out the pisteurs video feed of one coming down near Fornet this morning - all planned of course!

Anyway my lesson was part of a 3 instructor booking and as it had come in electronically direct to the school you always know it is going to be a bit of carnage and today was no exception! The actual 3 people I had ended up being about 30 mins late which was unfortunate as when we finally got going we hit the back of the ESF lessons all starting and since we needed to be up Bellevarde and without Loyes running it was a long wait so we finally got going about 1015 in the end. Anyway it was a slow and steady lesson but achieving much was tricky but hopefully they got something out of it. I have them again later in the week.

I was at home for lunch and Olivia was back too before heading off for a swim with her friend.

After doing some laundry I headed off to do some sorting out of my car which has been a dumping ground as usual the last few weeks and no sooner had cleared it out but refilled it with more things from muppet garage who has thankfully let us store stuff there the last few months... so we are self sufficient in these 4 walls (and car) now totally - yay!

This evening has been a family meal (maybe not too festive but we all love Fajitas!) and a move (Home Alone) for the kids whilst ive enjoyed a couple of beers and a soak in the bath!

Tomorrow im hoping its not too early a start from the kids but ill probably be sorely disappointed! It will be a chilled family day, phone calls to family and of course chrimbo lunch! Then back to work on Thursday.

Anyway I finally also got around to snapping some photos of the 'finished (but not totally - mainly the snagging list) article' for our place today too... so for those who followed the build from back in May it has been quite some transformation eh!

Merry Christmas one and all

Father Christmas here ended up falling asleep in front of the TV last night so it was extremely late when I finally crawled into bed. Making sure the presents were in the correct places and stockings filled etc and of course the beer / mince pie eaten. Game on.

It was after 0700 before we had a little visitor into our bedroom which was a good result and then (as parents of younger children will know) it has been 100000 % full steam ahead all day. There has been some TV wathching, lots of calling family, a lot of chocolate and snacks eating, some time outside and a mammoth xmas dinner. And when not doing all those things taking bins out, filling them up again, washing up, emptying the dishwasher, filling it again, emptying it again - oh yes no wonder Xmas day is knackering.

Anyway it was a nice day and the kids are in bed now sleeping happy. I will be joining them before too long as tomorrow it is back to the day job.

Weather and snow wise it will now be the same day in day out for a while - fresh but not too cold but most importantly the sun shining. The amount of fresh snow we had over the weekend means we are certainly set up nicely now for the New Year period but the avalanche risk will remain high for a few more days yet.

I didnt snap a photo today im afraid so will use Radio Val's photo instead.

Cheers.

Always nice to experience it

One of the nice things about this job is sharing someones goals and ambitions with them and help them get there and today was no exception!

It was back to the grindstone this morning especially with the alarm going off at 0630 but getting the kids out the door was not too bad and since I was starting in La Daille this morning I had more time than normal - yay!

Anyway I met my am session and today rather than the wife it was the teenage son taking the lesson and he was dead keen to ski the Face for the first time. Since the rest of the family were neither able nor willing to ski it it was down to me to get him down it.... so we worked on some technique for about an hour before taking the plunge and heading down the Face. I must say it was pretty busy up there today so I was little worried taking on the Face after 1000. Anyway it turned out to be good timing and he skied it really well indeed! Bravo. Yes it was slightly icy in places and the remnants of the world cup 'ice' was apparent in some places but certainly the fresh snowfall over the weekend totally changed the conditions for the better!

Ultimately it was a great ski and we continued working on technique and later in the session we skied the Yohan Clarey piste more than once. Brilliant work!

I rushed home at lunchtime and got lunch ready for Olivia and myself and got her sorted out after her morning of training on the Orange and then turned her around for the afternoons skiing! I managed to fit in my weekly recording of the snow report before Snowtrax and Mrs Snowtrax popped around for a cuppa and a catch up.

The timing worked really well as no sooner had they left but Clare and the kids got back home and so the evenings routine started and has just finished!

Looking at the weather forecast it will be a case of sun and more sun for the next week or so -eeek!

At the moment im only teaching tomorrow morning but there is a good chance that things could change for the afternoon - we shall see. On Saturday I think im on kid duty all day and after that I cant remember!

Anyway TTFN

I see that right now only 190/300k is open. That is quite number for this time of the year actually. Is it expected that more will open the comming days, or is there just not enough snow to open the remaining slopes?

@holidayloverxx, He has torn his ACL along with some MCL damage and add in some shoulder damage.
It happened on day 5 of the season Sad
Surgery is scheduled for the end of January and meanwhile he’s swapped his season ski pass for a season gym pass. He seems to have met a group of similarly broken people at the gym and now recognises most of the local dogs while out and about.
Luckily his threat to start baking chalet cakes hasn’t come to pass yet.

joeyvanrijn - firstly welcome to Snowheads! To answer your query - 'for this time of year' I dont think its massively different from an average as at this time of year more and more slopes open almost on a daily basis. So I do expect more to open over the coming days and believe a couple more things opened today. In some cases there is not enough snow cover lower down to open some runs but for the most part things are pretty decent out there.
muppet - what a nightmare for you all. Yea I bet he's seeing a different side to the resort at the moment! Any chance he'll get the skis back on again this season I wonder?
adithorp - haha very good! Thanks re the building works. Pretty pleased with it.

Warm but busy

I dont know whether it was where I went with my lesson (mainly the usual drag over to Tignes and back!) or something else but it seems so incredibly ramed on the slopes today.... just a lot of trashy slope users left right and centre totally inept at knowing how to ski or snowboard and just all seem to be copying really bad habits or what they think is 'the way to do it'.... all in all carnage left, right and centre. Since when did this sport just throw all the norms out the window and self combust!

Anyway before I go off on a rant back to what happened today... well firstly it was getting both the kids out the door (before I forget Ben passed both his little race assessment today and his technical assessment - thats my boy) and then myself. Clare dropped them at the appropriate place so I was able to head straight for my lesson and it was the same dad and sons as earlier in the week. They were a little late but luckily the lift queue was not too bad when we got going and off we went towards Tignes (see above) working on carving and dabling in a little general technique.

Anyway before I knew it it was midday and time to get off the mountain and back home. I did not get booked for the pm session but needed to get home to make lunch ready for Olivia and get her turned around for her pm session. However it was gone 1300 before she got home so it was the worlds fastest lunch ever for her before she headed out again - phew what a rush! Luckily Clare was home at 1300 so between us we got it all sorted!

This afternoon I did some more fixing work on my chair - its getting there slowly but surely. I also did some sorting out of my room and more boxes that are needing sorting out and finally went to collect Ben from club. Its been another pretty busy day all in all.

Tomorrow I am not teaching at all but instead on kid duty for the most part so expect a day of running around!

The slopes today were in decent nick but of course being busy the slopes are already getting scrapped right down to ice unfortunately and until we get a fresh dump day by day it will get more and more scrapped. The off piste remains pretty interesting with a mix of some great snow but also some crust - its rather weird mix for this time of the year out there.

Haha.

Annoying

It was a slightly later start this morning as I was not needing to get into ski gear which always makes things a little quicker! Yay.

Clare got sorted for her meeting of her usual NY week clients at the chalet and I headed into town with the kids for 0900 for the start of club! All went according to plan and then I thought I was being clever collecting a picnic lunch at Chevallot for us all but the queue in there was huge so a bit of a waste of time but either way got lots of yummy things before heading back to La Daille. I caught up with a little of the ski racing (did anyone see even the best make mistakes on the first run of the ladies GS - whoops poor girl!) and then Olivia messaged me to say her friend had invited her to hers for lunch... the friends mum just happens to own Empriente Avalin restaurant at the bottom of the Grand Pre so not a bad place to head for lunch eh! Mucked up the picnic plans a little though.

Anyway before I knew it I was heading back into town to get Ben but not before waiting forever for a bus which was annoying and made me a couple of minutes late! Anyway the sun was shining so not the end of the world!

When I arrived it was a little strange as one of Olivias friend had handed Ben one of Olivias ski poles which i could not understand... it turned out there had been a mix up with the poles with some kids using each others in the morning so Olivia had one of her friends poles and it was a bit of a mess.

Ben and I had a lovely picnic lunch up at at the Lounge and watched some of the ski racing on my phone and it was nice to spend some time with the little man too. He is pretty tired having been skiing all week so we mainly chilled.

I dropped Ben back at club and Olivia having initially not been aware of the pole issue now insisted I rush to La Daille where they were running gates on the Raye to give her her real pole back! All a little annoying especially when I got there and she had just loaded on the gondola for another lap again - grrrr! Anyway finally about 1445 I got home which was just about enough time to have a cup of tea before getting my jacket back on once again to head into town to collect Ben from club.

So basically i have spent all my day up and down from the meeting point and sorting the kids out.

Not the most exciting day but its the sort of way it goes during the school holidays!

So thats about it for today. Not a very exciting update really.

Tomorrow I am working in the morning and then at the moment have not been booked for the afternoon but we shall see if that changes and then that opens the way for the week of full days starting on the Monday! eeek.

Another late client

There must be something about this season as I had yet another VERY late client this morning - nearly an hour late - doh!

This morning was a little more hectic than it had been as all 4 of us needed to get up and out the door - Olivia to ski club, Ben to kids club, me to my lesson and Clare to her chalet to start the day. Anyway all was sorted as the kids were on form and we were off. Clare did the dropping off and sorting as had a later start than me but as it turned out I ended waiting nearly an hour for my people to arrive.

Anyway when they arrived it turned out that they were near beginners having done a ski in a day product at an indoor slope in the UK but that was about it. All good so we headed up the Solaise and spent the first hour working on the small magic carpet and getting them up to speed before heading to the big carpet and moving things forward more. I did try and catch up some of the time but also new I needed to get home as Olivia was waiting for me at home to sort her lunch out before she too had to head back to club this afternoon.

Unfortunately they have only the one lesson booked so I told them that they probably should stay on the carpet for the foreseeable future which is a shame as could move them onwards quite a lot if had more lesson time with them this week - oh well sure they will have fun non the less!

So I got home, had lunch, sorted Olivia out and we had the ski racing on the tv. Anyway I got Olivia out the door and then started to work through my todo list for the afternoon.

Had a friend around to check out the finished appartment this evening for a short while, got the kids bathed and showered and in bed but apart from that not too much else.

Got one of my main clients of the season starting tomorrow - a week of full day privates and then there will be the same at Feb HT with them and again at Easter so about 20 days between 2 instructors - 3 kids but they are super nice so it will be nice to see them again!

Anyway weather and snow wise the temps are pretty warm but the snow is holding up nicely.

The life of a ski instructor - not all beer and skittles, is it? One session in a snowdome, and one private lesson - and people think they'll just take off! We do always nag a lot, on Snowheads, about lessons, but we're right! It sounds as if Christmas week in Val d'Isere was super rammed and busy. Why would complete beginners choose to start there? I'm also stunned that people turn up, up to an hour late, for a lesson and just expect the instructor to be standing around waiting for them. So rude!

@Origen, I never understood the negativity about learning in Val d'Isere. Both myself and Mrs Sno Trax learned here as complete beginners and as a result fell in love with skiing, the mountains and especially Val d'Isere. We had a great first week, still remember it well and have never looked back. Since then, the beginner zones and offerings have improved greatly. Would anywhere else have had the same impression on us? Who knows? Just glad it was here and would never swap that first experience.

We never did ski school though, but we have had plenty of private lessons over the years, including some with Steve.

Our only regret, coming to it later in life and the many missed seasons on snow.

I think that apart from the cost, that VdI is a super place to learn, in fact world class. The facilities up Solaise are first class and then you can move into the Green Triangle up Belvarde.

Even as an intermediate, warming up Borsat, Grand Pre, Fontaine, 1st lift, an hour before the crowds descend, is quite magical.

Yes I agree VDi has upped its game for beginners in recent years. Progression from about 2 weeks experience onwards still a bit more of a challenge than is manageable for most?

Agree it’s a mystery why people choose Christmas week though. Maybe no suitable alternative or else they just don’t ask on snowHeads first.

Val d'Isere is expensive and often much busier than some of the alternatives. Even if money was no object for me, as a beginner (or for that matter any other sort of skier) I'd be specially keen to avoid crowds and queues if possible. There are quite a few reports here of people who encountered very little queuing, last week in contrast to the conditions described by Steve.

If stuck with school holidays the decisions are difficult but I'd always go for Christmas over New Year.

^^^ certainly Xmas week is generally much quieter than NY week thats for sure! Secondly I think Val has great beginner facilities it really does BUT I think the run colouring is misleading and for example to get to some nice greens (Grand Pre) you have to take on some nasty forerunners etc. I think the offerings for the first week skier in Val is good but for early intermediate and early intermediates there are baptisms of fire galore. The reason these girls yesterday had to come this week was that they were all teachers! BTW whether its peak week or the lowest of low weeks I dont think many beginners and new skiers care too much about it in terms of how busy it is - any other slope use at all is a hinderance to their line and often confidence and there are very few times on the magic carpets for example when it is totally deserted!

Over layering

All systems go this morning getting everyone up and out the door and I was still rushing. Time just seemed to disappear this morning and I think (sorry boring comment here) that emptying the dishwasher took a lot longer than it should have but anyways it seemed a real rush this morning!

However the sun was shining and today was the first day long session of about 20 with my London family this season as I have the kids along with a couple of other instructors for a week in all 3 holidays this Winter. Last Winter I was already booked up for NY week and Easter week when they came to book me so this Winter the mum got her act together and made sure all 3 instructors on the booking are plugged and loaded for all 20 odd days they are here for this Winter... yes they own a chalet here so can come for that many days.

So we met at the Rond Pont des Pistes and sorted list passes for the kids out - made sense for the kids to get season passes, and then me and a colleague took the 3 bigger kids whilst the 3 youngest beginners went with a ESF instructor lady we know so she could access the Piou Piou pen with them.

It took a little while to get going on the Solaise magic carpet and a few teething issue but then we were off. It was nice getting the kids dialled into their skiing once again. A mid sessions hot choc break was welcomed by all and before lunch we did some work on skidding with the kids and they then wanted to have a go at a drag lift so we ended up downloading to the Savonettes for a half hour or so.

Lunch was at the Yule hotel and a nice lunch was had by all.... I had a really nice burger personally and with the sun shining it is not often you can eat outside at this time of year!

After lunch we swapped it all up a little and the 3 little kids and the ESF colleague accompanied all of us to head to the small magic carpet up top and the big kids enjoyed being our assistants as we got the little ones going a little more. It was a fun afternoon.

One thing is for sure was that I over did it in terms of clothes today thought as it was pretty hot!!!!!! Doh!

After work I collected Ben from kids club and headed home for a nice freshening shower - bliss!

Whilst waiting for the minibus to come and collect them all from the meet point at Bananas I was standing chatting to the other instructors and kids when a voice said hello! It was an old client I dont think I have seen since before covid.... the daughter is now in her last year of university and the son doing his GCSE's and about 6ft tall! Blimey! It is always soooooo nice when that sort of thing happens. This jobs is really about the people that you meet and the relationships you have rather than the 'turn left, turn right' and having taught this family so many times over they years it was nice seeing them again and hearing all their news!

Also whilst we were waiting for the minibus (it was about 15 mins late) there was a random bloke repacking his ABS airbag and I heard him talking to his mate describing how he had been caught in a slide this afternoon and taken about 20 - 30m in a slide... the interesting thing I noticed was that he didnt seem to have any other equipment and (dare I say it) he didnt look in terms of the kids he was carrying / the way he carried his ski gear as if he had any idea about safety and off piste - doh - what a plonker!

Anyway tomorrow will be very similar to today in terms of weather as well as what and whom I am teaching.

I liked this last picture - 'the astronauts go skiing at sunrise' - we had a giggle today

Colder

Today was a funny one as I didnt sleep too well once again - has been the story of my week really - not sure why but I wake up way before my alarm each morning at the moment although tomorrow hopefully will be different - Olivia isnt skiing tomorrow, Ben doesnt have to get to kids club until whenever we / he feel like and amazingly both Clare and I clients have both decided that they do not want to start until 1030 so we dont really need to set an alarm - yay!

Now dont get any ideas New Years is NOT my favourite day of the year thats for sure... in fact i actually like New Years Day as the end of the first batch of school holidays is on the horizon it means - haha!

Anyway so as usual NYE this year will be a beer in front of the TV (and as usual that will send me to sleep about 2200 and ill wake up about 0100 - bah humbug!).

Back to today... we all set off with the girls and between the 3 of us instructors we had the 6 kids so we all headed up the Solaise and then I mainly skied with the bigger ones today and spent most of the time on the Madeleine working on stuff - jolly good work! Although as usual I was watching the carnage of idiots galore out there. I swear this industry is tearing itself apart with dumb messaging and imagery whereby all the wrong emphasis is out there and over time as the next generation is dumbed down in terms of skill and knowledge it becomes more and more a race to the bottom. Ive said it before and perhaps im just getting old but I dont see 'good' skiers very much on the mountain - lots of OK skiers but generally good skiers actually know their own limits and abilities and understand how much more there is to learn to get better... the usual spectrum of beginner to expert means that most of us, me included fall into the good category but far from 'expert' There was some guy today who could not lean further back and could basically only death wedge down the fall line up there today and trying to teach himself with a great big grim to his mates of 'yea im getting this sport'.... erm no you're not and I doubt you'll survive the week or anyone you come into contact with - oblivious doesnt cover it!

Anyway apart from the hot choc stop at Datcha we skied a decent amount all morning before heading towards the Grand Cocor down in snow square at lunchtime. We had a wonderful kids and instructors only (today) lunch there and boy the little kids wolfed down the nuggets today! Got through dozens of them - haha. Good value kids menu at €15 for a main and ice cream for pudding!

We had planned to ski again after lunch but we headed over to the Savonnette area and the nanny / housekeeper / dog sitter that that family bring over from the UK for the week was already there with the kids shoes for the kids to change into so they can go sledging so that was the end of my teaching day.

I headed home and changed and sorted a few jobs out before heading back into town for a beer at Blue Note. Tonight there was the torchlit descent so TDC and lots of other instructors were in the Blue Note for a pre descent beer so I joined them even though I was not taking part (I do my Vie Val d'Is workers association English avalanche talks for my season pass!) and Olivia who had had the afternoon off snow too came and joined me!

After collecting Ben from kids club I headed home and we have had a very chilled evening and now the countdown to NY is on.

Tomorrow we will have one more sunny day and then things will start changing on Thursday as it gets colder and snowier but im not convinced it is going to be mega snowy but I could be wrong!

Happy New Year folks.

HNY, Steve Angus. Apart from the quality and professionalism of the ski instruction available, you're not painting a great picture of Val d'I. Full - too full - of idiots, by the sound of it. Hope you all survive till the quiet days of early January.

Zermatt, Chamonix, 3 Valleys all suffer from the ‘half term heroes’ - it’s sadly pervasive. Having done 13 seasons in the Alps I still look over my shoulder a lot in the peak weeks, even more so when on the mountain with my 6 year old.

I also think a lot of the issue lies with YouTube and social media instruction videos. Don’t get me wrong, I think these are great. What they are not however is a substitution for professional coaching and tuition. There is an ever popular attitude nowadays that you can teach yourself anything and there is no need for any sort of formal tuition. This is maybe true if you have unlimited time and a mountain to yourself. It is not cool if you are trying to teach yourself skiing as an unskilled 90kg man when you’re sharing that mountain with my 35kg son. Not the biggest fan of the USA ski resort scene but I think they do the ski patrol thing right.

After many many years of skiing I still get some private lessons each year at the start of the season. I consider myself an experienced and reasonably good skier, but that doesn’t mean I can’t keep learning. The key to being good at anything is realising you’re not perfect and being able to use criticism to move forward in a positive way.

You can see them a mile off, balance way off, wide stance with the tips flicking about everywhere, abrupt and chaotic turn sequences… we were all beginners once but some of us didn’t push it on busy blue pistes with kids ski schools around!

Origen - yea sorry not trying to paint a bad picture but im way too long in the tooth to really care whether it paints a bad picture for Val or doesnt AND as others have said its not just Val. In fact im the FIRST person to criticise Val 'authorities' if I think its warranted about anything. People often say to me 'you should work for the tourist board' - especially if you watch my Instagram TDC weekly snow reports but the issue is I call 'rubbish' out if I think its needed such is the joy of being independent and I have been highly critical of groups before such as the STVI / certain ski schools and a whole host in-between! I wont sugar coat it - there is a LOT of rubbish skills out there basically.... however im often talking to the converted on here.
raino - 'half term heroes' / 'Frantic Fridays' (when everyone tries the Face having looked at it all week) / 'Mad Mondays' when people who think they can teach themselves etc head up and realise they are a loose cannon... I could go on!
NoMapNoCompass - could not agree more with those paragraphs - well said - all of it. I often say that a good skier knows they are rubbish - instructors / guides etc included in that!

Happy New Year

Ah yes I managed to sleep through the festivities last night and was happy it was New Years Day finally - haha yes!

Olivia had a very chilled day hanging out with her friends and staying out of ski boots before she has a race tomorrow. Ben was dropped off by Clare and kids club and then both Clare and I were not starting teaching until 1030 so a very chilled start to the day.

I met my team and we changed things up a little with me taking the two younger ones out for the morning and we had a blast and covered a lot of ground! We headed Bellevarde way and were lucky enough to get the pink bubble up which pleased the kids! After some technical laps of Grand Pre and playing some games we headed for a hot choc - they seem to have changed the layout of Maison Louly which is a little annoying having to have to be shown to your table etc now - dont know what was wrong with just coming in, grabbing a table and ordering (even if back in the old days self service was better anyway!). Anyway it was a chilly morning compared to what it has been so it was nice to warm up.

The slopes were pretty quiet when we were out at 1030 and luckily good timing and skiing over the lunch period meant it was quiet for much of the day compared to what it has been!

A trip down croc alley and then making our way back towards the Olympic followed after the break before getting to the Grand Ourse for lunch! With such a late lunch booking at 1430 and with the table outside when we got there the sun was about to disappear behind the Charvet but we tried to persevere outside until it became too much and headed inside. To be honest the whole of lunch was a bit of a disaster with service and the food I had was awful. For €37 I could have done (seriously) not only a better lasagne but more than two mouthfuls worth - shocking. The service was no good either and they had no options for kids pudding or anything either!

Anyway after lunch it was nearly 1600 so we called it a day, I collected Ben from kids club and headed home!

The weather should be turning tomorrow slowly and by Friday it could be snowing - hmmm we shall see. I have to say I noticed today in certain parts how desperate we are for snow - mainly because of the wind the other week but in places the mountain looks like a moon landscape it really does! For example when you get to the top of the Borsat the Col de Leisse green to take you towards Tignes does NOT have enough snow at the top of it to open and you have to come around and down a 'new' piste to get to it. Hopefully things will change up with this new storm coming our way - hopefully!

Back to it tomorrow.

It wont be long until they get the top half of the Val Park up and running but not yet a while

After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
Its coming in!

As I write this the weather has closed in this evening and it is now dumping down having held off all day - mainly sunny and nice weather for the most part but it has certainly changed very quickly this evening and we are expecting a jolly nice top up by the morning. I am sure there will be some PIDA work in the morning.

Anyway it was all go this morning as Olivia had her first proper race of the season and needed to be sorted for that (more on that in a moment) and Ben to kids club as well as Clare and I to work! But we got there by hook or by crook and I ended up being early.

So my team was the same 2 kids as yesterday and we were on the Olympic first doors and off. The plan was a lap to Tignes and back and off we went via the Borsat way... it was lovely and quiet up there for the first hour but slowly got busier and busier predictably! Doh! However the weather was really quite nice if not a little windy and certainly colder than it has been.

We enjoyed the fun run down in Val Claret and did some laps in the area before hot chocs at The Corner and as usual the sausage rolls were top notch! We made our way back towards Val doing some technique on the way and ultimately skied down to La Daille which was a good challenge for the kids!

All the time I was keeping one eye on my phone (unfortunately just when you want it to work it wasnt (live timings online!)) to see the results coming through of Olivias first proper ski race of the season. This was the RCF (Race Club du France) organised Grand Prix for Val d'Isere which is a ranking event open to FFS affiliated clubs and mainly meant Val d I'sere Club des Sports and RCF affiliated racers doing the race. Anyway Olivia was 4th girl out of all Under 14 girls entered after the first run (dropping to 5th after the 2nd run) but importantly she was first girl in the Under 12 category beating all the girls born in 2013 (she was born in 2014). So basically that is a first 'win' of the season for her. Yay! All the winners got a medal or trophy and (randomly as sponsored by Nivea moisturising cream) a Nivea tub of cream. Anyway most importantly one happy little girl this evening!

Anyway lunch was taken at the Brussels which is a lovely place to eat but a pain in the back bottom to get to especially with kids... alas we got there and had a nice lunch - I thought I ordered ribs and sautéed potatoes but it turned into lovely slow cooked beef with new potatoes but they were lovely! It was a nice nice. My kids were knackered though - totally so there was to be no skiing by them in the afternoon.

I took the dad out instead and we worked on red runs for the most part and had a great session - trying to encourage someone who is tall to settle more at the end of the turn! We worked hard for a good 2 hours before calling it quits and I collected Ben from kids club and raced home.

At home I had an old client of mine around for a cuppa and catch up which was nice but it was carnage in the house with us all getting home about the same time. Anyway we got sorted out and enjoyed the tea and cake and then afterwards to celebrate Olivias win we ordered a Jami delivery which was nice - just a shame I was too stuffed from lunch to eat much!

And that is that for another day.

Lets see how much snow there is by the morning eh!
