@stefoy4me, If Tontons is open in La Daille, it’s been excellent the past few seasons. Currently it’s closed but the bar and pizza place attached are due to open this Friday but not heard much about Tontons.
Can’t go wrong with Garage and what was Source and now moved premises to L’Avaline is excellent.

@muppet, @Frosty the Snowman, TonTons is probably our favourite restaurant. The bar is also pretty good and you can eat your Jami takeaway in there too
Also, both bar and restaurant are dog friendly.

I think im back!
Yes you read it right.... it has been the strangest few weeks and months and im TOTALLY out of mind set of skiing but go easy on me as I try and get back into the swing of things.
We finally a week (very stressful) ago moved back in and there are still piles of stuff everywhere and Im still not sure where my ski boots are let alone whats really happening out there. Having lived and breathed this whole project for 7 years see it come together has been exhausting. As I joke im now ready to sleep and put my feet up rather than start the season but as hard as it is the season I must start.
Forgive me if it takes me a while to get back into things but this has been the longest break away from skiing (not just physically but mentally too) ive had in 20 years.
I dont actually start back at work (and even then it will just be 1/2 days) until Thursday and it wont be until after Xmas that I am back working full time. I will get around to posting some photos of the 'finished' (are these things ever finished and even when they are you move in and notice other things that need doing) article im sure but at the moment im still running around combing doing unpacking (there is our whole lives) with lots of jobs that are on my list. For example I had to build our new chairs for our desk today and also mount the vanity cabinet that finally arrived for our en-suite today.... There is still the electrician to come and finish off putting sockets on walls and other bits but it is largely there yet the snagging list is vast. The problem with moving totally lock, stock and barrel is finding homes for everything.... all I know is I am NOT ever doing this again I swear!
Anyway enough on all that as I know you really want to know about the skiing and whats happening out there.... well id be lying if I talked from experience but Clare is back at work full time and tells me the snow is decent / the pistes largely open and colleagues also tell me that the off piste is OK in some places but getting tracked out. I think the start of the season has been what you would call average by all counts.
The outlook weather wise for the next few days is warm temps and then a massive drop with a storm coming through... ah perfect timing just as I get back to it full time.
As well as getting back on this I suppose I should try and find my social media account passwords shouldn't I as that needs firing up again! Ah yes I remember now how hectic the Winter is - and there was me thinking it could not get any more hectic... roll on Summer! At least I managed to have a half decent stab at my TDC video snow report last week.
Right thanks to Radio Val for the photo and im sure ill be relying on them for a few more days yet a while!

just back from a great weekend in VDI
Stayed in the Coravel Appts in la Daille which are excellent and highly recommend
Tontons is open, and we got in there, seems best way is to call rather than trying their booking app. Meal was generally good although my burger had to go back twice as seems struggle with medium was too much.
Le 1789 was best meal of the trip
La Rosee Blanche was excellent for apres beers
skiing was, saturday snowing and a bit difficult but Sunday was very good once it began to clear.
As always VDI is tough to beat
Hibou good too

@Steve Angus - Hi Steve, I have been recommended to ask you about finding parking in Val d'Isere for the week 28/12 to 4/1. I have tried https://www.parkingvaldisere.com/ but there seems to be no availability. Any tips?

Firstly thanks for the welcome back notes folks... slowly getting head back into the mode and doing this daily should help me get back in the zone. haha!
TroutWrestler - without putting notes on the various facebook groups on the matter the only official place you can get parking sorted is on that website. So if its saying fully booked then it may well be but seems strange to me it is. Try emailing them? Sorry not very helpful but not sure many options really. Sorry.
So the morning schedule of getting the kids up and out the door is now starting to work well down here in La Daille so that was the first thing of the day and I then headed into town to get a second hand 'spare' pair of ski boots off a friend as she was going to throw them otherwise (always useful in case Bens feet get much bigger this Winter and we are caught short!) and also pop to the post office to collect something. It was nice being on the 'instructor' bus in the morning and saying hi to plenty of people.
However most of the day was spent with my head in the 'AV' cabinet in the flat trying to connect up all the wall and ceiling speakers as well as the distributor for the internet around the house and whilst there the TV signal splitter. It was a case of spending 2 hours to get the first one installed and then after it got quicker and quicker! I think its done now - now to learn the systems. Mind you didnt get much else on the 'must do' list done unfortunately though!
It was lovely and sunny outside all day and I really wished I could be benefitting from it a little more but hey ho it will come.
I cant believe it is only a week to go until Christmas... poor kids are asking for more than a poxy little tree to be put up to make the place a little more festive and in all fairness the stuff is ready to go up - just when is the big question! Haha.
Last day tomorrow before getting the skis on on Thursday eek!
Not much else to add today - told you it would take me a while to get back into the swing of things.

@Steve Angus, I’m in 3V this week and it was much cloudier here than it looked in Val D’Isere from your pic. A good snowfall and much colder temperatures forecast from Thursday, which should set conditions up nicely for the busy Xmas week.

@TroutWrestler, Don’t panic just yet about parking.
Yes it’s the busiest week of the season and it’s not uncommon for the car parks to be completely full, but as some are open air (La Daille Plaine, Manchet, Laisinant ) SAGS who control the car parks in Val d’Isere are very aware that if there is a huge snow fall some areas of these car parks become inaccessible due to snow clearing, so some spaces are held back.
Ideally what car park would you want ?

Thanks. Ideally close to La Daille, but anywhere in Val d' Isere is better than the hassle of Brevieres. We are in. Vauxhall Combo so it should fit in a 1.9m indoor carpark, but outside is fine too.

Also have a parking question. Staying in Bourg Saint Maurice for 4 weeks and planning to drive up to Tignes at least once a week whilst there.
Any tips on where I’ll find parking as to book via the website you have to do 5 days minimum. Happy to do Les Brevieres / Les Boisses. Thoughts?
Also, if it’s recommended to not bother driving and just take a shuttle from Bourg then let me know!
Thanks

What are the dates of your trip @wdl92?
Other than at super busy periods, my advice would be to just rock up and park. les Brevieres, outdoor south car park is the most convenient for minimising the driving and being close to the bubble. Lac 3 underneath Maison de Tignes in Tignes Le Lac is the nicest and most convenient of the indoor car parks. They are all the same price. Another good one would be La Daille open air carpark in Val d'Isere. All three have an indoor area to sit and meet in the warm either part of the lift station or the tourist office.
The coach service between Bourg and Tignes is just that, a coach service not really geared up for someone ready to go skiing. Only a handful of buses each day so you have to be on time and about 12€ each way per person.

Getting back on it
Olivia was out skiing with Club this morning and then had a chilled afternoon at home with me whilst Ben basically spent the day with Clare - in the morning they were at the library and then in the afternoon they were in Bourg as Ben had a couple of speech and language assessments / meetings! Meanwhile with the sun shining I made the most of the opportunity to get the balcony cleared up ready for the onslaught of the bad weather and 'real' Winter coming down the track.... and then got a million and one other jobs in the afternoon but there are still not enough hours in the day unfortunately.
Tomorrow I am off back to the day job which will be a bit of a shock to the system especially with the bad weather coming in.
I just know it will be a hectic one and then hopefully I will be able to get some things done in the afternoon when I get in from skiing and not feel too tired! hmmm we shall see.
I must also remember to start daily photo taking tomorrow too.
Right TTFN until tomorrow.

Is the new Vallon lift operational yet?
Curious to know how that has an impact on L'Fornet. I can see on the website 'live lifts' the old cable car is green but not sure if that is just as the lift map not updated, I thought that had been removed?

Temps dropping like a rock
First thing I heard this morning was the howling wind outside - eek.... second thing I noticed was the thermometer saying temps outside had plummeted to -12 in town and final thing was I noticed it was cold getting out of bed (must turn that thermostat up!). Getting the kids sorted for the morning was straight forward enough and I put on plenty more layers to prepare myself.
However I was about to go put my ski boots on when I decided to put 'one more thing away'. This involves getting stuff up high in our top wardrobe in our bedroom and it is high as the ceiling at the back is over 3m high. STUPID STUPID me decided to stand up on the lovely old chair I inherited that has been in our family as long as I can remember - and I do love the chair although it needs recovering and is not the best condition. Anyway as I stood up the chair gave way, I fell down and the wall got damaged but arguably worse was the chair took quite a bit of damage with broken wood here and there. Luckily I was OK but I was mortified for the wall and chair count.... what an idiot. I was / am mighty p****d off with myself!
Worst still needed to head to work pretty much immediately after it happened therefore have had all morning to stew it over in my head!
Anyway my lesson was OK but it was jolly cold and although it started off quite sunny the weather deteriorated and by mid morning was snowing again! We skied options up Bellevarde and she did really well in tricky conditions - bravo!
Hot chocolate stop at the Empreiente Avaline was welcome thats for sure.
I got home at lunchtime and warmed up and sorted a few things out, did some jobs and got a few things ticked off. I also had a closer look at the chair and I think with some hard work I can put it back together.... yea plenty of glueing broken pieces of wood back together and ill have to core out where some of the dowels are and get some new dowels delivered but I think I can get it back in one piece... so will do that.... the first couple of parts of the fix will be the hardest by far... but little by little over the next couple of weeks I hope to get it back in one piece - gosh I hope so.
The kids got back from school and that is term over of course. There reports were both excellent so that was relief and great news.
Weather wise it will be cold again tomorrow but the sun will hopefully be showing its face some more. Ive had a nice warm bath to celebrate / commiserate the day.
There will be lots of getting the kids to and from ski sessions over the next week or two and im tired this evening so off to bed.
TTFN
The Tommeuse was about 5 mins late opening this morning but it was sunny which was the main thing whilst we waited.

Phew, I’m glad you came to no harm, I was so worried about what I was about to read! I hope the wall and chair are repairable.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
motyl - ah thanks for your concern... yes the wall can be repaired at some point probably next Summer with some polly-filla and the chair - well yes I will start the process of glueing it all back together tomorrow... it'll take a few weeks as have a lot of glue bits to do before letting dry and attaching to other dry bits that have been fixed and has to be done in a certain order.... oh and need to find good quality dowels too.... eek. Ill try and remember to post a photo when its all fixed.
Cold, quiet and a nice outing
Im still working out the thermostats in this place and have bought a standalone little one to compare the 'official' temps with what im trying to attain in different parts of the house so that the heat is better distributed and we dont as currently happens have stone cold bedroom at one end of the flat. Anyway my point is that it was cold this morning but the sun was shining. It was quite hectic as needed to get all 4 of us ready for action. Anyway Clare was heading into town so took the kids and then I crossed over to start my session from La Daille.
It was cold and crisp but sunny and being a Saturday lovely and quiet out there. We made our way to Tignes and did an 'around the world' so first trip to Tignes this year. It was a great session and I thought she made massive improvements again - well done! We headed back towards La Daille working on 'dealing with ice' as I knew it would get quite slick lower down and indeed it did but she was awesome - well done!
I was in charge of sorting the kids lunch and getting them back out the door for their afternoon session so it was a busy lunchtime. This afternoon I have watched the ski racing I recorded on TV and sat and wrapped the kids Xmas presents.
Im not teaching tomorrow but we shall have to see what happens with the weather as the kids might be at home and not skiing if the weather is as bad as forecast as there is a lot of snow coming our way apparently!
