Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Anyone have any suggestions of the best all mountain ski to buy.
Aim to start instructor level 2 and want them to last a few years. So many brands out there with different USP's that I just have no idea! Was thinking K2 Superfree or Head MYA 5. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Opens popcorn.

Ask a ski geek who skis "all" mountain and you might get an answer like DPS Pure 112RP or similar.

Ask an instructor they might say Head Supershape Titan or similar.

Ask a ski marketeer and they might point to 70% + of their product range.

Only you know what you ski like and if you're an aspiring mountain instructor you ought to know enough to pick out what suits you from a demo.

Basi l2? Your going to need them to do performance longs, shorts, moguls & variables as well as central theme, max 80mm underfoot???? . Will be interested to hear what other folk have passed their l2 on.

Do you want an actual ALL mountain ski, or do you want a marketeers all mountain ski (aka slightly fatter piste ski with non-race graphics)? How tall/heavy are you, skiing style, what have you liked before?

Thanks for all your comments - have realised I was a little too hasty in my original post and didn't provide enough info.
Agree that yes I should know better about skis but have only just got back into it and always rented whatever was suggested and available.
After 5 years of not ski-ing a lot has changed so apologies for my ignorance - only been back in the game these past few weeks which is why i'm asking for help!!

Am female
approx 9 stone
intermediate skier (currently)
will mostly ski on piste but will also be off-piste following additional training (60:30 ratio)
currently ski-ing on skis between 151-161

Obviously don't want to be talked into the wrong skis by marketing/sales guys so looking for some independent guidance before requesting the demos.

Thanks a million!

Senior PJ, which "level 2" instructor course do you wish to do? Have you already done a L1 course? If so which skis did you use for that?

can an intermediate skier be a level 2 instructor? honest question as I know nothing about instructing, apart from being instructed. I just ski Very Happy

Just renewed a lapsed subscription at realskiers and they like a lot of skis this year with the Fischer KOA 78 My Style getting top marks for a womens all mountain 50+% piste ski and the Elan Amphibio Insomnia being their top technical (non-race) ski. Nordica Infinite was top for all mountain 50+% off piste with Cinnamon Girl a close second. Top overall for the ladies was SkiLogik Goddess TT, but at 101 under foot, this is probably not what you are looking for to instruct/train.

Personal preference will vary, but lot's of good choices

My OH has been through choosing her second pair of skis over the last few weeks. She's a a good intermediate about the same weight as you. After trying most of EB & Snow & Rocks demo range (MK & Hemel) she's bought a pair of Scott Rosas. Her runner up choice was the Atomic Affinity Storm.

Maybe both a bit more off piste oriented than you're looking for but she had no problem skiiing on fridge snow with either. . As fatbob, said above - you really have to get out there and try them, it's amazing how different similar spec skis can feel. Helps if you're close to a fridge!

It's fun choosing too!

Senior PJ, This might also help - as far as I can see 11/12 models aren't online yet
but I've always found fall-line to be most accurate on ski reviews of UK mags.

Impossible to be totally objective but in my experience I agree. I have Atomic D2 VF which was well received by Fall Line and this year Atomic Theory 11/12 which again they speak highly of.

For what its worth both these skis fall into the broad description of All Mountain (albeit the former piste biased and the latter freeride biased ) so be wary of simply looking at anything in that description as there are a multitude of very different rides!

As always you really should try and get some demos for a really valid decision.

^ Thirded.

All ski reviews are highly subjective, because noone has yet fully quantified how to test a ski.

But of all subjective reviews, Fall Line is among the best available.

{Opens can of worms}

Has anyone else noticed that fall-lines ski of the year manufacturer always tends to advertise heavily with them?

Don't get me wrong, i love fall-line, i'm a subscriber and it's a great mag which i would reccomend to anyone but when it comes to their gear-guide i can't help but feel there's a certain ammount of "commercial decision making" going on

+1 for the Head Supershape Titans. I use those a lot for teaching and they are great for a multitude of conditions. The lower turn radius would be good for the various demonstrations you need to do on the L2.
But everyone is different and it's best to demo first if possible...
