Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

So no snow below 2,500m and nothing in the immediate future by the look of it. Buts who is ahead on the snow making front ?

This webcam from above Selva in the Dolomites looks promising.

Anyone got something else worth looking at ?

Schladming's Planai mountain has had one piste open since 23 Oct which is mainly man made (kunstschnee) see http://www.planai.at/winter/en/planai_news/News.html?viewPageDetails_ID=12276 from 1900m down to around 1600m.

This photo of Rohrmoos from a few days ago is quite cool

Another local hill (Reiteralm) has a strip of piste from top to mid station open but only for the austrian race team at the moment. For the last 7 or 10 days been snow making in the valleys due to temp inversion, some lower slopes (750m) are looking pretty white now with large lumps that need bashing around. Several ski areas scheduled to open next weekend, not sure that will happen.

The photos of Obergurgl here are quite shocking - amazing what they've managed to do with just snow cannons:

From an outsider... the amount of effort people put in to slide down a mountain must seem insane!

Obergurgl, Ischgl, Bormio and Val Thorens seem to be leading at the moment.

Obergurgl wins first prize in my book.

Cos of the temperature inversion quite a few of the Austrian resorts have made snow lower down but not higher up which is kind of weird. Ah well, at least some snow to ski on come Christmas.

The next step must be for a resort to cover the artificial snow pistes with a giant dome, a bit like the one in the Simpsons movie.

Our friends in Alpinforum raving about the quality of artificial snow in Ischgl. Nice pics. Hopefully they have the real stuff now. Shows what can be done though
