For info, we're probably looking to book a people carrier.

I used Avis last time I went there and the price was decent enough. After a recent experience, I'd think twice about using them again - Hertz are usually a pretty similar price.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

TwistBarbie, you may want to caheck that the hire co have people carriers available at the airport, IME you would have to hire a non-standard vehicle from the city centre. You'll probably need to give your chosen hirer plenty of notice.

It changes. You need to check em all. Although Hoiday autos is generally pretty good. I find budget are often cheapest and are a subsid of avis. Watch out for addons, local surcharges often doubling the cost of hire. CDW insurance also handy as I found out at New Year. 850 euro excess refunded by insurance company after some rather silly car park antics. No names, no pack drill.

I've used avis in the past and have always had a good experience & price from them.
That was until we hired a car from them at turin last winter. The base price, as ever was good, however, when I came to return the car the final bill was far far higher than expected. What they don't tell you at the time of booking are the charges that are payable locally i.e airport fees and local VAT (also added on to the price of CDW) etc.
Just make sure that you know exactly how much you are going to pay in total when comparing the various companies.

TwistBarbie, Try Nova car hire (an Irish based company) - they tend to have individually branded country specific car hire sites. We have used them for South Africa, Spain, Italy and the UK over the past few years and usually got the best quote with no problems.
This is their Italian website: http://www.rentacar-europe.com/italy/index.htm
Have also used holiday autos occassionally, but only got a better price out of them when they were actually advertising specials.
Google 'nova car hire' for their other country websites - and global website I think?

Agree with doogo, never beaten ebookers. Often considerably cheaper than the same firm they quote you for!
