Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Can you Dye a ski jacket?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have an older jacket that I like, it started yellow but has faded to a horrible sort of puce colour.

I was wondering if I could dye the whole jacket black rather than buy a new one? (cheapskate)

I have read a few things that say you can dye a ski jacket with Nylon dye.

Will this affect it's waterproofing? Will the dye even take if the jacket has a water resistant layer still?

Anyone done it or heard of it being done?

I have a lovely pair of cycling gloves with black leather palms. They are great most of the time. But, when it rains I get black hands. This still happens after they have been washed a few times and have been worn on several rainy rides. I would worry about black marks on your trousers and mid layer.

good point, hadn't thought of that. Would be wearing black trousers anyway, but still.

Still think I might try it as I am not going to wear the jacket otherwise.

I don't think it will dye because of the nature of the fabric - or at least, it will not dye anything remotely resembling black. Kind of washed out grey, at best. When I've dyed things it's only been cotton stuff, like jeans, which really takes the dye well - but if you look on the Dylon website (or similar) you might find some useful info.

I'd be surprised if a dye would take properly because of the waterproofing. If it's GoreTex or similar it probably wouldn't take at all - the dye needs something to stick to and PTFE is the exact opposite. Still, if it's dye the jacket or get rid of the jacket, you might as well give it a go!

I've always had really good results with Dylon dyes and if you contact them as pam w suggests I think you will find them really helpful. I also think that black dye may come out less than black!

JamesP_Alta, my mate got given a nice ellesse ski suit by Dominique Perret once he had finished a photo shoot. The jacket was navy and white but the trousers were white which he felt was risky. He dyed them with navy blue dye and they came up a pleasant light blue colour as the dye couldn't penetrate the whole fabric. 15 years on they are still a pleasant light blue...
