Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

It's a sport, and a social activity, and a way of clearing my brain of quotidian cares through the joy of transcendent physical experiences surrounded by the beauty of the mountains.

It is not a "hobby". That sounds like an option or a choice. I have to keep doing this. I need to.

Probably a bit of all of the above in my case. Think if I actually lived in / near the apps it would much more be a permanent fixture, where as now (and I suspect similar for many fellow snowheads) it's probably best described as an obsessive holiday past time. Puzzled

I'd say that sums me (and the mrs) up quite well and I'm still trying to locate that elusive appartment / chalet/ hovel to get me closer to the slopes at a moments notice.

Definitely way of life, I've skied since I can remember, took up snowboarding for a bit and went back to skiing when the kit got better. There's nothing like exploring mountains with a couple of planks.

A living (fingers crossed ... come on snow, currency stability willing etc etc ...) but beyond that genuinely difficult to pin down. "Hobbby" always makes me think of trainsets or airfix models, I'm not in the least bit competitive on skis so not really a sport. If it was an obsession I'm sure I'd try and do more of it. It's more just something I happen do; but to a certain extent it's one of the things that defines who I am - I am a skier.

Some people are drawn to team sports and are at home in a team environment.

I prefer individual leisure pursuits such as Skiing and Angling where i can decide when, where and how i will enjoy them without compromise.

It gives me a reason to get fit.

It gives me sunshine, in the middle of cold dark Scottish winters.

It triggers good memories, good feelings, and on a sunny day the slopes are full of happy people. Happiness is infectious!

It is a hobby, an interest, and it is good for your health.

Sometimes, it is all you live for. It is addictive, as the dopeamine reward, as well as all the other feel good rewards you get from skiing on a sunny day, are a pavlovs dog reponse.

It provides long periods of thinking time. So it is a hobby, and an interest, and these things provide you with balance in life.

Very Happy

Very definitely a sport for me - either competive in the UK or (allegedly, but I've had several comments to the contrary Embarassed ) non-competitive when out in the mountains. It's a sport when you are always pushing yourself to the limit and continually looking for that next breakthrough to be better - it's just called "competitive" when you are measured against others doing something similar, "non-competitive" when you're competing just against the difficulties imposed by the environment....and your own incompetence.

The instructing/coaching side of it can at present only really be called a hobby (at least that's what the tax-man would call it Crying or Very sad ).

But it all goes into one pot marked "obsession".

It's one of the few activities where I don't want the week to end - and want there to be another week some time soon. Unfortunately, I can only justify / afford one or two weeks as I'm limited to peak weeks. When I retire I'd like to spend a month in a ski resort in low season and not feel the stress of counting down a limited number of days.

Skiing is more like a black hole to throw money into.

Though it is also something to do while we are still able to.

It is a kind of freedom to be able to travel from mountain to mountain in a hostile environment relying some basic skill using the equipment.

Possibly one of the obvious choice of holiday if we decide to go in winter.

A holiday made more expensive by having to pay for the ski pass.

However if the wind stops and the sun comes out while you are resting or having a meal or coffee or beer in a sun terrace at the top of a mountain it is the closest thing to the paradise.

I like being desperate for a bit of winter when everyone else is moaning about it.

Having a thread resurrection morning - so many discussions I have missed.

In answer to the OP - Do the 'Shoe Test'

Does the activity require specialist foot wear? If the answer is yes, then it’s a sport. If no, then it isn’t. This gets rid of pub-based activities but keeps football, rugby, cricket and most importantly skiing in. Skiers have the ultimate in specialist footwear after all. New Blog on this very subject here : http://skiingwithdemons.com/2015/12/08/is-skiing-a-sport/

Although I think I'm the best on the mountain and try to charge around places knowing what I'm doing.

In reality I wish I could call it something more than a hobby, but I don't think I can. Maybe one day I'll get my act together and follow some of you into the world of living out there (unsure how), then maybe I could count myself as blessed .... or is it obsessed?? snowHead Laughing

Skiing is a sport, for about 1% of people. The rest are having a holiday or earning a living.

I don't agree with that. Is mountaineering not a sport?

For me it is a sport, a passion, a holiday, a social activity, a shared experience with my family. Since we bought a flat it genuinely feels like a basic part of our lives too.
