Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Internet technique resource "cool wall"...

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
The discussion over here and over here prompts the issue that there's a lot of really good skiing technique resources on the web. But that you really need to be careful because there's a lot of stuff that you really should ignore.

So I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread where we post some the good, the bad and the ugly.

Before I go first, I'll just suggest that when you take advice

- take advice off people you've seen ski (including on this forum!)
- only take their advice if you want to ski like them
- determine whether you want to ski like them by looking at a range of materials.

My offers (and feel free to disagree). If you don't like something then please say why.

Good

Jaz Lamb (BASS Morzine and BASI Trainer) doing short turns...

youtube.com/v/QMJi6slZ-0I

BASS Morzine have a free eBook - www.britishskischool.com/performance_breakthrough/ebook_promo.htm

Some good stuff from youtube.com/user/marmottematt

And some more good stuff from youtube.com/user/section8ski

Bad

Anything by this guy because the skiing is just pants...

Ugly

Anything on www.mechanicsofsport.com - the technique information is really dated.

Just my views. Feel free to disagree...

Bad

Anything by or connected with Harald Harb. Not because I think he's a bad skier but there seems to be a lot of kool aid you have to drink to be a disciple and it might mess with your mind a bit too much.

To illustrate my point anyone make head or tail of this?:

http://www.harbskisystems.com/olb4.htm

In fact I'd probably extend that to anyone who claims they've got the ONLY system that works for ski improvement.

Another Youtube resource is http://www.youtube.com/elatemedia - the youtube channel for the Ski School App on the iPhone and android..

Met the team at Metro and seem like a great bunch that really want to help skiers of all levels progress with the right info.

As always your thoughts are welcomed Very Happy

Who is the skiing God in orange trousers and blue top at 2m:03s in http://www.youtube.com/user/marmottematt opening video? Holy moly that's nice edge control (or lack of it; and I may be getting the name/term wrong) / slipping. His legs look almost straight so he's just doing it by feel? I want to practise until I can do that... Very tidy in my opinion! Edit: all your videos are good Marmottematt ; thanks!

Phil McNichol and Bode Miller keep it pretty simple and it's hard to argue with their credentials.

All three in one video! Starts off ugly Very Happy The bark chippingly-close trees skiing is to me very, very good ; likewise their powerful, fast carving turns in second half (also their variables handling is pretty tasty in first half). The "doorstep" attempt [pushing someone over someone else's back] is bad NehNeh

shoogly, & gives hope to us hacks who use the power slideslip as a frequent tool in our armoury. I don't think he was nuts, he had fantastic balance e.g. being able to waterski on snow skis & a willingness to push the envelope. & don't forget he had a very disciplined technical background in a skiing family and as a mogul skier

Interesting video Kenny. I don't know what others think, but I'd put BASI somewhere between the Canadians and Austrians. What do others think?

To my eyes, the American skiing style was quite dated with lots of counter in the shorts.

Kenny, very cool post , would deserve a thread of its own as a comparison of national "styles" i agreed with the canadian coach on most things but thought he missed a few things regarding the French...

Interesting -so who looks the best? French & Swiss & maybe Canucks for me. Japan looked horrible, Austrians robotic ( though to be fair that was footage of some dreadful coordinated exercise rather than a free run).

Great link, thanks for posting. Will look in more detail, but first impression is that while there might be some differences between the national systems, the similarities in approach to modern skiing are much more significant than the differences.

However, does it really matter what the top guys in each national system ski like if that doesn't filter through to every instructor qualified in that system. I was teaching a guy this morning who had some lessons with a Swiss instructor in Zermatt and some of the things he was told to do ("ski across the hill then swing your shoulders to make the skis turn") should make your hair curl!

Ah yes, the counter in the shorts. I asked this very question once. The consensus reached (by coaches and ex national teamers, not instructors) is modern slalom is all crazy sidecut and lots of carving. Movement is mainly lateral so you tend to stay square to the skis. Outside the gates (in Whistler anyway) you can't ski like that or you will die, you had better know how to pivot your skis and keep your upper body pointed down the cliff so you tend to be countered. If you pivot your skis and try to keep squared up I think they would call this 'rotation' and you would probably not stop falling until you hit the village. It's a theory, not sure what the CSIA party line is.

Kenny, looking at the CSIA grading videos it looks like the CSIA line is to stay parallel.

On a 45-50 degree slope you'll find me both countering and whimpering. But it doesn't necessarily make it either pretty or effective...
