Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Shell or Ski Jacket??

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All,

Question for you all on gear options. I am going skiing this January for a week and was wondering what type of jacket I should be wearing?

I have a gore-tex hard shell walking jacket (mountain equipment) that I have used a lot for walking, my question is, would it be fine to this as an outer and layer up inside or would I be better off buying a full on ski jacket?

My jacket is about 7 years old now but similar to this: http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/index.cfm/product/mountain-equipment-firefox-pro-shell-jacket/fuseaction/products.detail/code/11110964

Advice / comments appreciated.

Thanks

Montarius, I think what you've got there will be absolutely fine. The beauty being you will be able to add and subtract layers to suit your temperature.

A lot of ski jackets are just shells. They don't neccesarily have an insulation layer.

I would add a good merino wool base layer and a hoody/fleece with your jacket and you'll be fine for the vast majority of the conditions you will encounter.

Hi Feast, thanks for your reply. I have been looking for merino base layers as I also do a lot of mountain biking. Bit lost with the second layer, will any old fleece do here or does it need to be made out of a certain material? How would a micro fleece do?

Montarius, merino +/- micro fleece with the goretex hard shell will be spot on!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Montarius, welcome to snowHeads! snowHead
My only problem with a jacket like that would be a lack of sufficient pockets.

Montarius, I think a micro fleece would be fine. I normally just wear a hoody, because I like to think I'm a youth (I'm 30).

Pedantica, fair point about the pockets. You can never have to many. But your lift pass should be fine in your left trouser/pant/salopette pocket.

Pedantica, yep but those sorts of jackets are designed so you can get into the pocket when wearing a backpack with waist belt Toofy Grin

livetoski, even if I'm wearing a backpack (which isn't always) I prefer to have a few get-at-able pockets. And the pocket on the waist belt of my backpack (Dakine Pro) is just about big enough to carry a lipstick and a small purse and no more. Mind you, I grant that the OP may not want to carry everything but the kitchen stove liberally distributed about his person like I do. wink

Pedantica, yep agreed my little backpack waist pocket has the lippy and a few business cards.

A backpack helps stop snow going up your jacket if it does not have a snow skirt

Thanks for all the replies.

The jacket actually has a surprising number of pockets, far more than the one linked so I don't think that will be an issue.

Unfortunately the jacket is plane black, might have to get some colourful salopettes..

Montarius, good plan. I've got a black NF jacket. I have had to add some jazy blue Bonfire Particle pants to liven it up a little. Very Happy

Saw some that colour at TK Maxx, think im going to have to invest. Cant be the man in black...

Quick question on the merino base layer, what MG should I be looking for? Seems like its either 120 or 190?
