Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi, all.

I've been a lurker here for quite a while and really like your site. Snowheads was recommended to me one of your members (who shall remain anonymous unless he chooses to own up to pointing me here).

I live in Jackson Hole, Wyoming (USA) and love to ski both in-resort and backcountry. In my younger days, I worked for several winters as a backcountry ski guide here, so I'm pretty familiar with our mountains and our skiing. If any of you are planning a ski trip to my part of the world, I love to show people around our ski area. Email me and we can hook up.

Now for the request...

My wife and I are planning a trip to Slovenia in about a month. We're leaving the US on September 22 for 14 days in Slovenia. We'll mostly be on a walking tour in the Julian Alps, but we're spending time in a few other cities/towns as well. I'm interested to learn if any of you have recommendations on favorite restaurants, sights, and activities in any of these towns:

Ljubljana
Kranjska Gora
Bled
Bohinj
Ribcev Laz
Mlino
Sezana
Tolmin
Kobarid
Bovec

Our walking tour will go from Kranjska Gora through Bled to Bohinj and back around to Bled. We're also going to spend a couple of days in the Sezana area visiting caves and my wife wants to ride a Lipazanner (spelling edited - thanks, beanie1) horse in Lipica. We're going to spend at least one day and probably two doing Via Ferrata climbs near Kranjska Gora, and I hope to go flyfishing for one day on the Soca' River.

So, any suggestions about things we shouldn't miss while on this tour are enormously appreciated. We love little out-of-the-way restaurants, we love wine, and we love fairly strenuous hikes. If any of you have any ideas for us, we would love to hear them. If you have info you'd rather not post here publicly, you can email me directly at bob@north40realty.com.

Thanks in advance,

Bob Peters

P.S. Come ski with me in Jackson Hole.

Bob Peters, you're far too modest, lots of us know you here as an author. I'm afraid I have no knowledge of Slovenia other than driving through it so any information you can share would be a bonus. I'm sure there'll be a snowhead along soon with some information.

Bob Peters,

Welcome to Snowheads. Afraid I have never been to Slovenia but hopefully there will be someone here who can give some advice. And I think you mean a Lipizzaner horse!

I hope you continue to post here now you've started - I'm sure with all your experience you could bring lots of good advice!

beanie1, So is a lurker someone who has joined snowHead but doesn't post and hides his/her presence? I thought it was someone who looks at a site regularly but does not, or, has not joined. (I will take delivery of the thicky baton when ever the current holder wants to pass it on wink ).

It was the Pistol-packin' Papa himself.

Thank you for all the welcoming posts. Very friendly (and sleepless) group here.

Ginger, I think I joined about a year ago. I'm going to try to be a little more active here because this is a great place to learn about skiing in Europe, which I've never done. You Europeans seem to have the skiing thing figured out - ride up one valley, ski a little bit, have food and wine in some little village, ride up another valley, repeat until tired, drunk, lost, or all of the above.

Anyway, thanks for all the nice messages.

Bob

Can't help on the specifics of Slovenia - but I can certainly vouch for a warm welcome in most Eastern European countries. I go to Poland a lot and its really refreshing to be welcomed somewhere that hasn't yet been spoilt by too much tourist commercialism...
Have fun... and welcome to Snowheads - and come over one winter if you can drag yourself away from the amazing snow and conditions at Jackson Hole!!!

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Bob Peters, Welcome to Snowheads snowHead . Sorry I can't help much on Slovenia either - I guess most Brits ski in France, Switzerland, Austria or Italy, and so don't know much about Slovenia. I know that Lake Bled is supposed to be scenic and features in many British Summer "Lakes & Mountains" type package holidays. Slovenia used to be part of the old Austro-Hungarian empire (the capital Ljubljana used to be called Laibach in German). I guess the cuisine will therefore be similar to Austrian (i.e lots of meat and fairly substantial), but if you like spicy food you will probably get some good goulashes with plenty of paprika Shocked If you're out hiking and its anything like Austria there should be plenty of Mountain Huts where you can get refreshments and food (apart from hot meals it is often pleasant to try a plate of local cold smoked meats and cheeses, washed down with some local wine). I know the adjacent area of Austria called Burgenland produces plenty of wine, so I would be amazed if Slovenia didn't also produce some Very Happy

I see that you hope to visit some caves. I also like visiting show caves - I've seen a few in various countries, but I've never seen any to beat Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico - I guess you've been there?

Jackson Hole sure is a great location - lucky you!. Apart from the great skiing, the experience of staying in Yellowstone in Winter (which I've done twice) is outstanding - scenic cross-country trails and fantastic wildlife snowHead

Hi Bob

I have been in Ljubljana ,Kranjska Gora & Lake Bled & but it was back in Yugoslavia days around 1981 !! All I can say from what is the scenery is the same as Austria ie; stunning Very Happy If the snows bad & your going for the skiing I can say that Kranjska Gora has snow making even back then which I think was the first time I'd ever seen a green hill with white pistes winding down to the valley Very Happy

Ljubljana is beautiful

You may wnat to check out these caves (unless there the one your going to )

Bob Peters, welcome!

You may remember me from the Bear Gathering in Jan 04...many thanks for showing us around and for a good party! (and I'll be back to ski Corbett's...)

I'm from Eastern Europe but never been to Slovenia...trying to work out right now if I have any friends who went there...if I do I'll let you know.

Hope you enjoy your trip there...

stanton, I expect he's going to Postojnska jama.

Wine: Look for Šipon (aka Furmint or Mosler elsewhere) and the fruit brandies. The reds are chancy. EDIT: feel free to give the Laški Rizling a miss. The beer is great; the hops are exceptional.

The Elan factory in Begunje might be worth a visit if you're a real gearhead.

If you have the time, you might get a Croatian visa and visit the Roman forum in Pula.

Bob Peters, I did a week hiking and climbing in The Julian Alps exactly 10 years ago. Thanks for bringing back those memories.
You made me start looking for the old hiking map of the mountain. Very Happy

I hiked some peaks including Triglav which is the highest, and some beautiful valleys.
Since things are changing rapidly here in the former Eastern block, my information may be outdated in terms of restaurants or accomodation etc, but I guess the mountains are still the same.

I am glad to contact you via e-mail if you need more info.

Wear The Fox Hat,

I don't know. Somehow that moniker seems vaguely familiar. Perhaps we *have* met. And I certainly second the suggestion about buying me a drink - I'll never turn that down.

Thanks again to all of you for the kind words and for the advice on Slovenia. We're really getting excited about our tour.
