Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski/Flight Bag Recommendations

I am looking to buy a ski bag for travelling on flights. Ideally I am looking for one that can fit ski boots as well as skis and be pretty well padded to save the equipment from the baggage handlers. Does anyone have any good recommendations for this.

What size? Just got a nice Dakine 175cm roller bag from Amazon that will take my skis, boots and a weeks worth of kit

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I would be looking at something to fit 170 skis as well as the boots and quite frankly as much as it could take within the flight weight limits.

The cheapest double you can find. Probably a shop's own branded one.

I can vouch hugely for the Ellis Brigham one. I have spent 2 winters traveling round europe on public transport with it containing 2 pairs of skis, boots, tripod and ski gear. Its been up and down way more stairs than it was originally designed for and is still going. Im massively impressed with it Smile

I have read a number of stories about the Dakine bags and ski boots not actually fitting, unless they are particulary small and so seeing as I have size 30.5 boots that might be a problem. I spotted this one, Big Air Ski Roller Bag, http://www.skiwear4less.com/acatalog/Big_Air_Cargo_Ski_Bag.html. Anyone had any experience of this one. Although I must admit the weight of this one would slightly concern me. Coming in at 5.5kg and having only about 12kg for the whole bag with equipment would seem like a bit of a struggle.

Am selling one of those Big Airsart vandelay, http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=81201 its unused but decided its a bit long for what I need. Yes it is a bit heavy but better padded than most and not sure where your 12kg comes from, Easyjet allow you 32kg if you've booked a ski bag http://www.easyjet.com/EN/Planning/baggage.html
Dakine one is what I've gor. Haven't tried my boots in the boot pockets yet but plenty of space in the rest of the bag if they don't fit (and it does look like it will be a bit of a squeeze for my size 27 boots if they do fit in the pockets.)

I know it's not strictly speaking 12kg for the ski bag alone but seeing as my baggage has a 20kg allowance then taking skis gives an extra 12kg. Seeing as I normally (without any ski equipment) struggle to stay under the 20kg for clothing alone and I calculated that my boots, skis, poles and helmet come to approx 10kg then a 5.5kg bag would mean I would have to drop a bit of my normal clothing.
