Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Existential crisis

Ok….wind back ten years. I look at the crop of sking vids for that year (2001) and we have the ‘Three Phils’ (Phil Larose, Phil Belanger and Phil Dion) aka ‘the New Canadian Air Force’ doing amazing things on the hill, all to the sound of fast paced rock and thrash guitar – ‘…LET’S TRASH THE MOUNTAIN…’ is both the stated phrase and the underlying semiotic – lots of off-hill scenes of carnage, bad driving and heavy drinking. Yeah….let’s get trashing, mashing and bashing….

Wind forward to 2011. New crop of seminal short films to much higher production standards – and note films like Candide Kamera – floaty ethereal soundtrack which communicates higher state of being, respect for the environment, the Zen of skiing. Slo-mo walking – a sense of calm, measured judgement and high control. Let’s take control….respect ourselves and our limits, and our place in the natural world.

But the skiing is EXACTLY THE SAME – mad lines down coulior and big air off faces – one genre ‘trashes the hill the other ‘respects the mountain’. But the same skiing.

So which is it…WILL SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE THEIR MIND UP!!!!!
