Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Solo ski trip

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi All

My first time on the forum. My late husband took me skiing 5 years ago for the first time and I loved it! I'd like to go again but will be a solo skiier (not quite a beginner, but almost!). I'm over 50 so, much as I love the company of much younger folk, I'd probably be more comfortable with 40 to 50 age group who are happy on the 'milder' slopes - at least for first day or two!!! Very Happy I'm brave and spirited so 'all ears' to any help via this forum.

me797910, Welcome to snowHeads snowHead

There are a few threads on the forum regarding solo trips (people trying to get a group together, fill spaces in a group or giving feedback on their own experiences). Also, from what I gather there are also some ski courses where you can go as a solo skier, improve your skiing and meet new people. Some of these seem to have quite a wide age range too and are something I'd like to do myself Smile. I'm sure other snowHeads with more specific information than me will be along soon.

Hi Marianne

You could consider going on one of the ski trips run by the people who run this forum.

If you send them a private message with your phone nuber (DON'T put your phone number in this section of the website), then I'm sure that one of them will get back to you to discuss it and give you all the information you need.

The group trips tend to have quite a few people going so you will always find someone to ski with at level you're comfortable with.

Send a private message to either Admin or any of the forum moderators and they will contact you.

Good luck

me797910, The trips suggested by Wayne, are a really great idea too as they are good value and everyone is very friendly. I've only managed to go on one as they are normally during term time when I am teaching. That is also why I've not yet gone on any of the courses I mentioned above. The fact that I have to go skiing during school holidays when places tend to be busier and more expensive also means I'm not the best person to plan trips with at the moment! Toofy Grin Sad

Hime797910,

I don't know if it is any help (and feel free to ignore me if it isn't) but we have a chalet in Les Coches with single rooms available at no extra supplement.

Chalets tend to have a relexed, friendly atmosphere for meeting people, and we can help with all the bits and pieces such as lift passes and lessons.

You can see more information by clicking the link below but if you have specific requirements (ie dates with other 40-50 year olds booked) then please feel free to drop me an e-mail and we can help.

I'm sure that you will have a great time wherever you decide . . .

With best wishes,
Heather

If you are open to Slovenia, we have some deals there in a catered chalet, giving you the chance to meet others, or we have 2 special ski weekend packages to Montecampione in Italy designed for singles and couples who want to meet other skiers....

Or I'm going L2A for Charlotte's (easiski.com) On2Off course at the end of Jan when a C2C is also running, got a good deal on a single room as part of the package she is offering, only about €25 single supplement for the whole week and the promise of a double room for myself.

welcome to Snowheads, me797910, snowHead Have a look at those two links. We met a group of Classic skiers in Les Saisies last season (we have an apartment here). One of them - an Englishman living in France - was delighted to be there, as the previous summer he'd fallen off a ladder, mending the roof of his house, and at 82 thought his skiing days would be over!

I did a ski course on my own, when I was a little older than you, and shared a room with another woman who was even older. There were several people our age on the course (and I only shared a room to save money, it wasn't compulsory!).

There are loads of possibilities. Charlotte's "Cautious to confident" week sounds as though it would be just right for you - you could send Charlotte an email about it (easiski.com)

Wow, Marianne - Guess what?

I just signed up for this site, as my husband has sadly had to give up skiing because of his knees, so I'm branching out alone this season (holds no fears for me as I've been to Japan on my own....) and also MY name is Marianne, and the first post I looked at - as it quoted "Solo Skier" - was you!

Well, I CAN go fast, but I prefer to cruise, and I CAN do moguls (bumps) but I prefer to avoid them, to be kind to MY knees - I want them to last as long as possible! In that age group, like you, while I'm comfortable with younger folks, I'm not much into the apres-ski all-night partying scene (actually I'm not AT ALL into the apres-ski party scene!), preferring a coffee and sticky bun straight after skiing, followed by a nice evening meal and chatting/chilling.

I've actually just booked a week (7th of January 2012) in Obertauern, Austria, which is one of the highest resorts in the country, so tends to have snow when lower resorts are a bit thin. I've been there before, and although it's not a huge resort like Kitzbuehl, it has some nice shops for after skiing, plus several mountain eateries so you don't have to go down at lunchtime, unless you want to. Its other advantage is that it has a mountain on each side of the road which goes through it, and you can ski all the way round in a circle (they have ski-bridges over the road!) back to where you started, and then you can go all the way back again, so there's lots of scope and lots of runs. Also not many drag-lifts, which ARE a drag!

I'm what they call "an experienced skier," and although not an instructor (at least, not an instructor of SKIING.....), I would be happy to help with tips if you want, or just act as backup if you prefer to learn from your own mistakes. And it's always nice to have A N Other for company, isn't it?

Good for you, branching out on your own, so if you fancy trying Obertauern from 7th January (I'm in the Petersbuhel), please give me a mail and maybe we can ski together.

All the best

Marianne

+ 1 for Friendship Travel - I went with them a few years ago to Courmayeur. Very mixed age group - only downside is that quite often you have to share with someone you've not met before. May not be be for everyone.
