Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austria motorway vignette

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'll be driving to Austria this winter and know that I need to buy a vignette to drive on their motorways. Was googling to find out more and found this on our very own FCO travel website:
"If you use Austrian motorways ('Autobahn') and 'S' roads you must display a Motorway Vignette ..."

So: do I need the vignette to drive on S roads, whatever they are?

More specifically, do I need it for the roads that go from the border to Zell am See and then along the Salzach valley to Gastein, Bischofshofen, etc?

S means Schnellstrasse and you need the vignette for those as well but they are always marked.

You can buy a 10 day one, 2 months and a year. The 10 day one is currently 7.90 Euro and can be bought at any of the service areas on the approach to the border between Munich and Salzburg. You will need one before you actually cross the border on the motorway. Last chance saloon for buying the vignette is the border crossing at Walserberg and you can have some quite long queues there at peak times. So a tip is to drive on to the petrol station and buy it there.

You need it if you are driving down the A10 Tauernautobahn (Salzburg to Bischofshofen) where you turn off to the B311 which takes you to Zell am See.

is it true that I can buy a 2012 vignette on 1 Dec2011 and get 13 months out of it?

If you drive down the motorway (past Salzburg, rather than by Zell am See) to get to Bischofshofen, etc., you will need the vignette.

However, if you intend taking the route via Zell am See, leaving the autobahn at the second exit after the border at Kuftstein/Kiefersfelden (Kufstein Süd) and then driving to Saalfelden (via Fieberbrunn or Lofer) and on past Zell am See, then you don't need a vignette, as long as you don't end up at any stage back on the autobahn, A10 (including the dual carriageway east of Bischofshofen, I think). The route via the autobahn is probably easier, though.

stevev, you can buy the Austrian vignette for the following year (and two extra months) in December (actually valid for 14 months, e.g. the 2012 vignette is good from 01.12.2011 - 31.01.2013).

If your going from Munich to Salzberg on a ski season weekend your going to see a lot of queues, the autobahn was always stacked up worse then the m25

espri, You can also try to use the Bad Reichenhall route if it's not closed because of avalanche danger! You can also come off at Siegsdorf and follow the B305 to Schneizelreuth then picking up the B21 towards Lofer. After that it is signposted to Saalfelden and Zell am See. Not an easy road at any time of the year but fun to drive in the early morning on a summer's day! Laughing

For someone who does not know the lay of the land and also driving right-hand drive car, the Autobahn is easier and less stressful. snowHead
