Hi, wonder if anyone can help. My Father is heading out to do a ski season in Morzinenthis winter. He is bringing a car out from the UK to use occasionally whilst there. From Morzine he will be heading onto his summer place in Gozo for the summer season, where the car will be then insured with Maltese insurance.
I worked years ago in Morzine and remember insuring my car whilst out there with a French insurance broker. I then reopened UK insurance to drive home. Not sure sure if this is still feasible?
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated as time is creeping on and Dad is heading to the UK to pick up a car.
Thanks

summer, French insurers will usually only insure a UK reg car if you tell them you're in the process of importing it. We did this with AXA once and it was six months before they started chasing us for French documents.

I insured one of our cars through Lloyds and they had no max time limit on car being overseas. That was a few years ago so not sure if this is still the case.

We've used Co-Op for this.

AndAnotherThing.., I use co-op for one of my cars last time I renewed they tried to put me on a new policy that didn't have 12 months euro cover. They said that option not available for new business but existing customers can stay on it, as I did in the end.

you need to be very sure you have understood both the overall limit on days in Europe during the year and the limits on individual trip lengths - the two are often quite distinct (as they are for annual travel insurance policies).

We did stay on it last year to try and keep it, but with a quote for £450 for a basic Panda it seems a bit steep.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I used Stuart Collins when we lived in Belgium. They were brilliant and their quote was actually cheaper than having the car based in the UK which was rather bizarre considering the standard of driving in Belgium and the horrific garage costs should anything go wrong.
Just remember that if you move to a "foreign" insurance company you may lose all of your no claims discount entitlement...this happened to me so be warned!

Another vote for LV.com
Covered my car for the season for an extra £19.99 and I did check with them that it was for a continuous trip and they said that was ok

I have a policy with LV too and they have 180 days limit per trip on their European cover, so plenty for a ski season. I chose it specifically for the length of European cover (have used them for the last 3 years as they are the cheapest policy with long Euro cover) most of the others were only 90 days, some shorter.
If your current insurance has no Euro cover or a shorter limit, so you need to check your policy to see how many days you are covered per trip.
I heard somewhere that by law they have to give you third party cover for Europe, but I'm not sure if that is correct or not.
If it is a shorter limit you can possibly add on extra European cover which might be easier than cancelling your UK insurance and taking out a French policy for 6 months.

Where is you Dad actually resident, if he is not a UK resident he may not be able to get insurance in the UK he should be looking to where he is a resident.
cran Look at the back of your certificate of motor insurance, it lists the countries you will have 3rd party insurance in.

Hi still UK resident, but spends about 8 months working out of UK. Diving season in Malta and this year a ski season in Morzine (taking a year out!) he needs to be in the UK for a month from now so will insure in UK then take 180 days cover in for European travel. From Mirzine he will head to Gozo where he can insure the vehicle on the island where it will live after the ski season.
