Poster: A snowHead

Between Ugine and Megeve, D1212 is this open during the winter? Daughter working in Chatel, this seems the quickest route from the Tarentaise, providing the road is open.

Fogliettaz, The D1212 is normally open during the winter, Megeve is the highest point.

Fogliettaz, ...yes usually open, and reasonable snow clearing, but be aware - as always really - that low air temp eg 3deg can mean patches of ice on the road forming quickly at night - I was caught out on a curve on the D1212 late one night and had an 'interesting' moment the other side of Ugine (en route Moutiers-Chamonix) - all was well but scared the hell out of me - ie the thought of going off into trees on a road with few cars, at midnight...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Fogliettaz, the problem on that road between Megeve and Ugine (which is nothing to do with the col des Saisies) is that the road through the Gorge de l'Arly is very prone to landslips and the like, and prone to closure, though they've done a lot of very expensive work on it in recent years. IF that road is closed then yes, you would need to go over the Col des Saisies, which is a long way round.

Graham,
We were back-and-forward a lot to the Portes du Soliel last winter. Quickest way is Bourg - Albertville - Ugine - Megeve - Saint Gervais - Samoens - Les Gets.
At least 2.5hrs door to door from Sainte Foy to Les Gets. Further to Chatel.

Hi,
The conditions on the Gorge de l'Arly in the winter season are always updated on the front page of the Megeve winter website, I would always check that out before setting off

As pam w said the problem is often in the Gorge de l'Arly in the wet. In the Summer you are usually redirected over the Cotes des Rafforts(D109) and I imagine it is the same in Winter. The road is okay and does not add too much time to the journey.
