Ghost Dog, When I worked in Edinburgh, a few years ago now, we had a masive fall of snow overnight.
Hillend was closed because of Elf and Safety.

Boredsurfing, really... that's poor.
I was up there last winter when it had about 2ft of fresh powder and it was great. Only time I've heard of it closing was due to crazy amounts of ice on the access road which meant it was too dangerous for staff to drive their cars up.
Great news about the investment... will hopefully come to fruition as it needs some cash splashed on it. So much potential there.
One problem that there has always been is that it's owned and operated by Midlothian council whereas the main catchment for it is Edinburgh council, therefore it's not widely promoted in the Edinburgh area.

I'm supposed to be travelling there for the British Schools ski Championships in November. Can't see the school paying for me though so the pupils will have to just go with parents.

£1/2million plan submitted to develop Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend
Plans have been submitted for proposed new slope developments at Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend.

The proposed developments will cost around £1/2million and are being paid for by funding secured from Sportscotland, the national agency for sport.
Planned improvements include:
* An additional 210 metre slope on the hill
* 80 metres of new nursery slope
* Extension and improvement work to the existing nursery slopes with new, safer ski matting
* Exciting new snowtubing runs
* Installation of two new travellator uplift systems
A planning application detailing the proposals has been submitted to Midlothian Council for consideration by the planning committee.
Midlothian Council, which owns and runs Midlothian Snowsports Centre, has worked closely with an expert team of designers on the plans. The developments are designed to improve the skiing experience for beginners as well as regular skiers and snowboarders.
This is in addition to the enhanced, new snowtubing facilities which are sure to be a fun new way for non-skiers/snowboarders to take to the slopes.
Councillor Derek Milligan, Leader of Midlothian Council, said: "These plans for around £500,000 worth of improvements are an exciting next-step in the continued development of Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend. If the plans get the necessary planning consents we expect customers to be able to use the existing facilities and slopes as normal throughout the winter.
"We know there is huge enthusiasm out there for the centre and these proposals are designed to offer something for everyone, whether it's snowtubing, learning to ski on the new, safer nursery slopes or choosing a different slope from the top of the chair lift.
"Back in March we announced that national backing had been successfully secured for Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend. The plans which have now been submitted have been developed in close partnership with Sportscotland and we look forward to continuing that close partnership as this exciting project progresses."
Chief Executive of sportscotland Stewart Harris said: "This proposed development is an excellent example of how our partnership with local authorities can find local solutions to sports facility development. The investment in the Midlothian Snowsport Centre will ensure its future and help it attract visitors of all ages.
"sportscotland is delighted to have worked with Midlothian Council and expert designers to help bring such a varied and exciting development to the brink of fruition and to help maximise the full potential of the site."
Subject to necessary planning consents Midlothian Council hope to appoint a contractor and break ground on the project before the end of December this year.
Careful scheduling of the works is being planned to ensure a virtually uninterrupted service this winter.

MoodyFFS, I went to Rossendale in the snow last winter, but a few days after it had freshly fallen, so parts had worn off. That made for interesting skiing as you obviously went faster over the real snow, then hit higher friction when on a bare bit that was just dendix. Fun though!
