Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Advice on recovery from surgery

Oh b*gger, b*gger' b*gger!!
I can't believe this: I waited for hours in my hospital gown to be taken to theatre and then got cancelled and just got home. Now its back on the waiting list for a slot.

I've known for about 5 months I probably had cancer and then had the biopsy in late June. I can't believe how much waiting is involved now. No wonder British cancer survival rates are bad. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

I almost experienced the same thing, though with much more trivial surgery - routine hysterectomy, no cancer. I was all ready to go, and they came in and told me my operation was cancelled. I asked for a glass of water, which was brought. Then half a minute later somebody rushed in shouting "Don't drink that water.....". they'd decided to do it after all. I was so pleased - I would have been really cross if it had been postponed, when I was all psyched up for it.

Sad not good.

snowball, Sometimes this happens for a decent reason... but... if there is a significant delay, ask them if they are in danger of breaching their National target for "definitive treatment" of Cancer within 31 days of diagnosis or 62 days of referral... and ask who in the Cancer Network you need to discuss this with. wink

stoat of the dead, 31 days! ho ho.
I had my biopsy on the 29th June which is 107 days ago and the result of it 79 days ago to say I had cancer. Then after scans the particular operation was decided on 59 days ago. They don't have a slot for me again for another month so are trying to add more lists (ie operating theatre time).
Referral was a month before any of that so 135 days from referral so far.

Admin, perhaps this should now go to another place on the website - I don't want to depress people who wanted to get happy thinking about skiing. Sorry everyone.

Hurrah, Op on Friday.
(However I now have a head cold so hoping it doesn't go to my chest and stop the Op)

Assuming it goes ahead I'll report back how its going in a few weeks.

snowball, very best wishes for a smooth op and a speedy and complete recovery. I had keyhole surgery for a hiatus hernia repair. As others have said, although you have only a few small holes and no major scars or muscle damage, they can and do make some major moves in there. Like moving my liver out of the way and then putting it back. My intestines shut down completely in protest and took a few days to restart.

Hi all, thought I'd give you an update (some of you may have noticed me back on Snowheads occasionally the last 3 days).

Had the Op Friday afternoon despite a bit of a cold. It has all gone well except the cold went even more to my chest, and coughing up phlegm has been extremely painful - it feels like I'm tearing the stitches. Otherwise everything has gone very well and fairly painlessly.

I walked a few steps the day after the Op, and went home late Sunday afternoon. Today I walked more than half a mile on Hampstead Heath. I do need a rest in the afternoon, though, and sometimes around supper time.

The strange thing is I've never met my Surgeon (though I met a Registrar) and met only a general doctor on the ward the day I was released from Hospital so have had no chance to ask anyone specialist about how much exercise I can do etc (though no heavy lifting for a while I know from a leaflet).
My best source of information has certainly been Big Paua.

I'll wait to see what the nurse says when I have my catheter out next Thursday (at present I have a nifty bag I strap on my thigh under my trousers).

I've put my late January SCGB holiday forward to early March, but I'll still go on 12th January to the Dolomites on the holiday I organized. I'm quite hopeful now that I'll be able to ski with the others at least some of the time - but we'll see. About a month till I know if I may need further treatment which could b*gger everything.

March will be quite crowded now - Engelberg with SCGB then straight on to Ste Foy with my friends, then a couple of days off and up for the Snowheads Scottish bash Very Happy Very Happy

snowball, Good to hear from you and glad it all went ahead at last.

If the cough is still a problem, maybe you could have a chat with your GP to see if they have anything useful? I had a similar problem after a previous op and know what you are going through. I tore a staple out with coughing. This time round, I was armed with asthma inhalers which have kept it all at bay. I find the blue inhaler works a treat for loosening phlegm and thus reducing coughing.

With regard to walking, etc., this is my second pelvic op, and the advice has been similar for both. If it would help, I could summarise it here, or PM it if you prefer. It's now five weeks since my op and I managed 50 mins continuous walk today. It was the first time I have not sat down to 'admire the view' at the top of the hill.
