Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wife and I heading out to Hintertux / Mayrfofen November 19th - December 3rd.

I know it's a bit early but those are the weeks she could have off before the new year.

Anyone else around then?

JamesIE,

Have you thought of a tour of Austrian glaciers rather than staying at Hintertux?

Even as a big Hintertux fan I think a couple of weeks on the glacier there may well leave you craving a change of scene...

You could therefore also consider Kaprun, Soelden, Pitztal and the Stubai glaciers. All offer a good range of slopes, with accommodaion nearby. There is also Kaunertal and Dachstein, although they are a bit smaller in terms of area and variety.

If you plan you trip well, you could ski then drive an hour after that (or 90 minutes max) to your next destination.

If you hire a car (even for a few days in the middle of your trip) then drive elsewhere for a spell there would be no need to book accommodation at that time of the year. Simply turn up and knock on doors for cheap B & B - or go to the tourist office! Either way, you'd have no problem.

We usually pay no more than €35 pp per night, although we managed to find a lovely place near Hintertux for €20 each last season!

Bergmeister,

We hadn't really considered a tour. Which, thinking about it now is a bit odd as we'll have a car.

We've already booked our accomodation; so I think this will be something to keep in mind for our next 'pre-season' trip. (Also my boots are in Mayrhofen.)

Looking at a map, I think I'd be inclined to start at one end and work my way towards the other, or perhaps just concentrate in the west.

Start in the west and don't really bother with the Dachstein unless you want to go touring. The actual skiing area (i.e. lift served) is as dull as ditch water. But touring wise the area is the bees knees!

Pitztal and Kaunertal have reliable snow but not much in the way of lifts. They are both popular day trip places for Bavarians and Austrians so avoid them particularly at the weekends when they fill up quickly if the snow is good in pre/early/post season or crap elsewhere in the season proper. I once spent a very boring day going up and down one drag lift because the queues for all the other lifts were way too long. As I was with a beginner it wasn't too bad, but had I paid full wack for the lift ticket I would have been a wee bit narked! Also check the Kaprun area as to what "events" they have planned when you want to visit. Again they make a huge effort to get loads of people at special events in the off-season time. I turned up with a friend last season on one of these weekends and spent most of my time in lift queues. We packed up at about 12.30 as we were standing around longer than we were skiing. As we had season tickets it wasn't much of a loss, but had I paid the 42 Euro for a day pass I would have been fuming!

Sölden, Stubai, Hintertux and Kaprun (Kitzsteinhorn) are all good areas for a few days playing. What about Mölltal while you are at it? Just over the Großglockner in the Hohentauern National Park area.
