Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Stag do... Something different

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All, I need your help!

I am getting married in 6 months (most stuff is sorted as far as the wedding goes....) but the main thing that isnt sorted yet, is the Stag do.
I really dont want the normal pub crawl, trip to Newquay or trip to Vegas (even though that would be well out of our/my budget!)

I live in London, UK and really like the idea of going skiing for the weekend. The idea situation would be to get on the infamous Snow train. It would have to be a Thursday night and arrive home Monday due to peoples work commitments and most people only being able to get about 2 days off work. I havent seen many "long weekend" ski trips. there all aimed at the week.

The other issue:
-Budgets are going to be tight
-Some people cant ski / board (yes they can get lessons but one or two have knee problems. so somthing for them to do for a couple of hours during the day would be good)

I remember hearing about the snow train being a night train, and there being a disco / night club carridge onboard. I cant seem to find any details on this. It would be ideal if we could all get on after work on Thursday with our luggage at St pancras and club and drink it will we arrive at the resort on the Friday. then get a few hours sleep before the people who want to hit the slopes can go out and ski / board, and the others can sleep. The we all meet back up in the afternoon and in the evening go out Apres ski style and continue this routine (with the non skiers boarders having a cinema, shops, bars etc open during the day with things they can do until we come home on the Monday.) I remember Pas De La Casa being somewhere that might be ok for this sort of thing, but can it be done on a budget, on the snow train from Thursday till Monday?

Thanks all. Suggestions welcome. I really need to sort something!

The snow train as was is dead. To go out on a Thursday night you would need to get the eurostar to Paris and change for the sleeper to the Alps. Loads of chalet operators do short breaks over the weekend - get flights into Geneva/ Innsbruck and the skiing world is your oyster.

Neil, There is only only a direct overnight Eurostart train to the Alps running on Fridays during the ski season.

See here for details. http://www.seat61.com/ski-by-train.htm#Eurostar%20daytime%20Ski%20Train

There used to be another Europe Rail train but that has been discontinued.

Ahh dam it >_<

the Europe Rail train was the one with the "Disco"? on it?

Looks like I will have to fly then :/

Ok looking at long weekend ski trips in general then. Flying from Stanstead or City would be a bonus, but not a must (they are by far our closest airports)

Neil, I'd suggest flying to Geneva and going to Chamonix - very easy and quick transfer and loads of options for both ski and entertainment. What dates? Will be much easier if you avoid the French winter holidays from 11 Feb - 11 March.

Neil, what sort of budget do you have p/p and what dates are you looking at. There are some great resorts ideal for stag do's in Austria but due to their popularity it is often difficult to book accommodation for anything other than a full week.

The Budget is the issue. As cheap as possible really as I have a few students coming along and they are on a really, really thin budget!

How much would a Thursday to Monday trip to one of Austrias "ideal" Ski Stag resorts be pp?

Mid March might be better than if it avoids certain holidays. Cant be to close to April as 2 of the guys misses are both due end of April, and they wont leave them "that close" to their due dates. (which is fustrating as my wedding date is the 20th April, whats the bet both of them go into labour on the day of the wedding?!)

Neil,

Since you're London based, it might be worth looking at Ski Weekends.
They offer flight or coach based long week-ends to various resorts.

Back in March I did a last minute coach trip to Morzine with them. If you can face the long drive in the coach, then it's quite an effective (ref time off work) and cheap way to do it.

Morzine is also big enough for the non-skiers to keep busy..
And a few decent bars! wink

instead of mainland europe, what about the scottish resorts... You could drive/minibus to keep travel costs down, BnB or hotel and those that want to ski/board can do so and the rest can just get merry in a local pub or do some other non-ski/board related activity.

Ideally id like to get out of the country. Its not a sucsessful stag weekend unless at least one passports needed in my books! Wink
Seriously I did think about scotland... but really had my heart set on somewhere outside of the uk for that added ummph to the trip!

Yeah I would consider that...... not a huge fan of coaches though (im 6ft 3!) but if it was a substantchal price difference, Id go for that.

Budgets going to be around £350pp or am i dreaming?
Can it be done?! Ive seen week long trips for about this price before... Thursday to Monday (including travel days) must be cheaper than the £1k suggested above?!!

There are companies who will do package weekend trips for you, some of which use coach travel to keep the cost down (a friend did this last year, will ask him for the details ::: edit: see kruisler's post above).

But for more choice/flexibility take the DIY route, which will almost always work out cheaper.

Break the costs down as follows:

1. Flight - try to fly to an airport close to your chosen resort, budget £120 p/p
2. Transfer - cheapest is to rent cars/minibus and drive to resort, budget £60 p/p
3. Hotel - decent b&b in Ischgl, Solden, St Anton, budget £50 pppn
4. Lift pass - for 3 days approx £100
5. Ski/board hire, if needed, budget £20/day
6. allow plenty for food, drink and entertainment.

Add all that up and that's a ball park figure. You may shave something off here and there or pay a bit more.

 You know it makes sense.

Neil,
SkiWeekends also do flights

£350 might be unrealistic. Even with the coach, which will cost approx £300 for travel+accommodation+half-board and then you still have to add the lift pass (£100-150), ski hire and of course beer money..
Realistically you're looking at circa £600 for the cheapest week-end..

Neil, You'll struggle in St Anton or Ischgl to get a weekend booking in any B&B.........I dont know Solden but others only usually take weekly bookings.

Suggest you may get better success in Kitzbuhel but you'll need to hammer the internet and email to find b&b rooms, fly scheduled Lufthansa (some cheap early discounts still available) and get a train to/ from resort.

Neil, Providing the main reason for the trip is a "stag do with skiing", rather than a full blown out ski trip, then I'd say go for it. Sounds fun and well organised. Just don't expect too much high quality skiing/snow (edit: or maybe I'm doing the area a disservice).

how long is the daily transfer to the ski area ?

The Slovenia deal looks good to me, particularly for a group which includes non-skiers. Mountainsun to Tignes would be far better for hard core skiers, but Ljubljana much better for hard core lap dancers.

Yeah noted and I agree

The city centre to resort is 45 mins.
from airport to city centre is 30mins.

It does look rather promising. Anyone been there?

I think £400 and above is out of budget. So £500+ def to much. Sad

This price including ski passes, pub crawls, accom etc looks rather impressive. Agreed the skiing wont be world class but two days on the slopes.... im sure it will be fine! Smile

Nope, but I did, last week, enjoy the company of the Slovenian-speaking Greek opera singer currently sharing a flat with my son in Genoa. she had just come back from a trip to see her Slovenian boyfriend and had brought back big sacks of vegetables from his parents' organic smallholding. She certainly spoke warmly of the place and it would be more interesting, culturally, than the same old same old in France or Austria. They'd been out mushroom gathering in the woods. And last time I went to the lap-dancing club in Les Coches I felt it was rather third-rate. wink

Done the same within the past couple of months so will share my experiences. Doing a weekend is difficult without making it expensive, I tried gettin quotes from Crystals shorter trip specialist. Catered chalet ONLY was £640. The guy was straight with me and said you're paying for the full week regardless of whether you stay that long or not.

Chamonix seemed to be the best balance of snowsured (late March), nightlife, cost. Flights to Geneva were about £45 with a bag, accomdation for 17euro a night. Probably is lift prices and to a lesser degree hire passes remain constant, i.e. not much/any scope for haggling. Anyhow for those who needed to hire geaqr it was still going to be around £400 all in before you were fed and watered.

I'm glad that arms were twisted and we settled on a week in a catered chalet in St Anton, pass included £630. Is there a chance you could get something like an appt for a weke and those who can't stay longer can come and go and those who can stay on? Otherwise I reckon you'll really struggle to get any sort of skiing abroad that will be cheaper than what you've got in Slovenia

Yes, the honeymoon is booked for end of April. Which took most of the budget!
5 nights in Cancun, 2 nights Miami, 9 nights Jamaica (Secrets wild orchid, montego bay)

We also have a week skiing together in January, with friends (mixed groups)

Not really tbh. plus the whole chalet thing isnt what we are really after on this occasion, being a stag weekend.
I think the Stag Ski weekend deal is the best ive seen so far.

£300 for Ski passes, PRIVATE transfers to the airport AND to the slopes, flights (199 without flights) included entry into lap dance clubs and a personal party planner rep..................... its pretty much exactly what I was looking for! I think its a rather good deal!
