Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skier Cross

So Alberta Alpine are now incorporating this into all their programming, I presume this comes form a Canada Alpine lead. So starting this year all K1s and above will race skier cross. Next year the age groups change so K1s will be U14s (12 and 13 yr olds) . I am not sure whether the U12s will race skier cross next year or not.

So our race club is now doing skier cross training at KD level (now 9 and 10 year olds, next year 10 and 11 year olds). This includes training on dedicated tracks, nakiska and COP

I think this approach may allow continuation of Canadian's success in the sport, I believe other alpine nations still have it in freestyle?

I actually think that Skier Cross will be the most participated snow sport in the future.
It's still really a new dicipline, but it ticks most box's.
I've tried it a few times, and it's a real buzz. I used to ride Moto X bikes, so the adrenelin rush was pretty much the same.
You are also not so reliant on having the fastest skis...as there are so many other factors to take into consideration.
Seems pretty easy to get into too.

At the school my son attends in Bad Hofgastein they have this year introduced a skier cross program, I am monitoring it closely as like spud, said I think this is a real step forwards in the right direction for wintersports. We have a couple of cracking athletes too in Greg Samuels and Peter Whelan, and of course Emily snowHead

Aberdeen Ski Club have announced that they will be running the Scottish Ski/Board cross championships at Glenshee again this season (see http://aberdeensnowsportsclub.org/Competitions). Last year was a great event, supported by Red Bull; Glenshee created a good course and the competitors and spectators made for a good atmosphere. My son came near the bottom on his age group, and moves up to the next group this year, but I expect he will enter because he enjoyed it so much.

I agree about the increasing popularity of these competitions - they are better for spectators and actually racing against people seems to be good for competitors. We tend to gravitate to the ski/board cross runs in resorts as well, just because it's fun

Agree with you all. Skier cross is a great spectator sport (although whether I want my 9 yr old competing in it is s slightly different matter!)

So the canadian freestyle clubs have recently been offering it through dedicated ski cross programs but I think the real successes will be by having skiers convert from other alpine events - starting out with a broad skills base in all types of racing and skiing and only later specialising. So the move from Alberta Alpine is a good one. The canadians do rock at Skier cross.

gryphea, I think it is hard to say the best route in. It is a real mix of results for guys coming across from alpine, some do well and some dont. Everyone has a basic alpine background competing but those who specialise in skicross early are tough to beat, moving across from alpine is no longer a easy move. I think in the long run it will be those following dedicated skicross programs from the start of FIS who will be on top. Sounds like a great move by Alberta though, it will give their guys an opportunity to try the sport and fantastic for talent id.

The Canadians are certainly very good although they are down to two inside the top 20 on the men’s side now.

spud, Unfortunately with qualifying skis are extremely important still, only 32 make it into the heats and qualifying times are extremely tight. The last WC i raced in there was 1.48 between 1st and 32nd in qualifying.

Your definitely right about the numbers, there are more and more racing every year. Once you do one you are hooked! There is nothing quite like racing other racers on crazy man made terrain. It is even more fun when you get to race in a heat with a team mate and tactics come in to play Very Happy Pete and I had a lot of fun at the french champs at the end of the 2010 season working together shouting out tactics to get through heats.

Hopefully there are more of these in the future to

Sorry i didn't make myself completely understood. I realise Skis need to be fast when qualifying, but during the heat of battle during a race, it is purely not down to having the fastest skis as there are so many other aspects to take into consideration...like braking to avoid hitting someone. But yes i understand your sentiment.

Your comment about tactics and team mate involvement, also backs up thought's i've had about this Sport.

Skier cross could quiet easily be run as a team sport as well as an individual sport. Having two skiers from each team in each race.

It could be run along the lines of a Speedway meeting.

For example... Team Red Bull v Team Monster v Team Amp ( all energy drinks rolling eyes ) A Three team Tournament

6 skiers in each Team.

A competition ran over 15 runs or Heats.

6 skiers in each 'Heat'... 2 from each team.

5 points for the winner, 4 points for 2nd, 3 points for 3rd, 2 points for 4th, 1 point for 5th, 0 points for 6th.

Each skiers points are added to the teams ongoing total. Team tactics would really be a big part of this. Two skiers, skiing together to block another skier passing, protecting their points...you get the drift.

I really think this would be a great spectator sport. You could have sponsered teams on a 'Grand Prix' circuit around the mountains over a season, developing a league.

Courses set out, ran at night under floodlights. Big party atmosphere...etc,etc,etc.

It's the way forward in my book.

ahh yer 100% once your into the heats you don’t have to be the fastest out there especially with the importance of the start and the slipstream opportunity's. Brilliant for us from smaller nations, gives us a realistic chance of getting up there once we make heats.

They did run pro events before it went Olympic and the guys used to ski for a manufacturer (Saab, Jeep and Honda tours). I only ever did one (my first one) and it was the most fun I have ever had racing, shame it was the last Saab event they had. It was 6 at a time and there was a split half way down so you could choose from two different routes. Having 6 made a big difference, although it is only two extra it felt like a lot more! There was also that big party atmosphere etc but i guess things change when a sport goes Olympic.

They used to have some cool variations at the events in America. At one point at x games they had a team event where the put a skier and snowboarder together once their team mate crossed the line at the bottom their gate dropped at the top. They also used to have a one on one event at Jeep tour with a dual slalom going into skicross!

There is a good night WC event in Austria every year, worth going to if your ever near.

Cheers for that mate. That last vid is exactly how it should be. A Pro team Circuit doing exactly that over a season.

I'm sure the likes of Red Bull and Sky/Eurosport could get involved.
