Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

big fat rocker skis, worth it for europe??

Poster: A snowHead
Have been a bit busy, so only looked at this again tonight...........er...its been interesting reading, now i can see the benefits of rocker, so will have to try some.... so I think the blends may go, and will have a dabble in the rocker end of the pool. Will keep the prophets while i have a dabble.

To be honest the most versatile skis i have used over the past few years are my rather old watea 78's, mainly because they are very good in bumpy conditions, not good when its really very hard on piste (they flap and wobble a bit!) but are just fun and really agile and for a narrow (these days) ski they float really quite well in the fluffy stuff.

but more importantly the big big downside is looking at them.....they are brown, with lighter brown bits! Very Happy

rob@rar, I saw skis in the Alpine museum in Chamonix that were the size of frikkin barges and carved from solid wood. There were no bindings, just leather straps nailed onto the skis. How the hell did people ski those things? Or, more to the point, how did they manage turns on them?
Were those Victorians all hardcore straightliners? Shocked

Exactly right. Be on the right skis for what you're skiing as much of the time as possible is my advice.

It's an embarrassingly large number, although they are mostly slalom or GS skis wink

I think carving skis revolutionised skiing because of their versatility. But I'm struggling to understand how specialist powder skis (which are best suited to conditions that few skiers experience often) will serve the masses well.

Because most of them AREN'T specialist powder skis (OK things like the DPS Spoon and Lotus 138 are, but that is properly at the extreme end of the scale). Sure rocker and width makes skiing deep pow easier and that surfy feeling is so damn fun - but hero pow is awesome fun and easy on any ski, hell, even on blades! Offpiste isn't just about pow though, lumpy crud and breakable crust are a bitch to ski with stiff narrow highly cambered piste skis, but really fun on something a bit wider with some tip rocker. Honestly, the only time I don't prefer my 118mm rockered skis to my 92mm normal camber skis is on piste, really tight bumps, tight super steeps on hard snow, or anything that's really hard frozen. For anything else the bigger skis are better and just more fun! With the 5 point sidecut and normal camber in the underfoot section, they are just sooooo much more versatile than I expected them to be (I thought they'd be a pure pow ski getting used a few days a year).

Also you have to take into account that big skis let you ski in a way that is just impossible on little piste skis.

^^ This

I think there has been a tendency in certain quarters to describe anything above 100mm as a specialist powder ski (certainly UK ski shops & many alpine countries until very recently). Look at snowboards - very, very few people ride specialist alpine boards and the boards that are ridden have nowhere near the edging ability of even big skis. Yet snowboarders don't lack for fun although purists might say that lots of them have fairly shonky technique.

Cant even believe I am replying to this. This debate is 5+ years old wink

I agree that for most UK skiers the one ski quiver is the only option. However for intermediate / expert skiers the optimum European all mountain ski this should be in the 90mm-105mm range. This is the optimum width for a mix of moguls, piste, powder or spring snow that you find in a typical days all mountain skiing. Perhaps BASI zombies / learners / racers / true pisten carvers will want to go narrower... But who is going to be having the most fun ?

Yip - Doesn't matter if pixies are male or female as skis should be selected on ability not gender. Assuming you have the basic skills, and aspiration, to ski the whole mountain, in a variety of snow conditions, then this is no real reason to go any narrower than 90mm. Obviously small people would buy shorter length skis appropriate to their height.

For a genuine all mountain ski, with off piste bias, then circa 100-110mm is about right for typical euro conditions.

Pedantica, try something like the Volkl Aura or the Rossi S3, I have both and love them and they are my main skis for Scotland, only take out the skinny skis when it's really icy and hasn't snowed for ages which ironically was only during my European holiday this year.

Pedantica, my sister, who is also tiny, has just got some WDF Directors on the Dot's Dozen scheme (should've been mine, but since I broke my kayak and lost my paddles, which have to be replaced, I can't afford them now, very jealous Evil or Very Mad ) - I'll let you know how she gets on with them.

My gf (who is also pretty small and light) loves her Voelkl Kikus, but she's also an annoyingly good skier.

I suppose something had to fill the void left behind by the snowboarders vs skiers debate. Nature abhors a vacuum wink Which, I suppose, answers my earlier question on page 1 about why this sort of factionism exists.

Exceptions are numerous but I expect there is a fair amount of correlation of the degree of discipline applied in your development (Instructor training, formal tuition, race training etc) and your choice of skis as it influences your view of technical precision. For a snowboarder stepping onto big skis the fact that edge change might take a while isn't a big deal, for a racer it might be everything.

I got a pair of S7's last year and couldn't believe how good they where on and off the piste. They are really easy to ski I went for the 188 after struggling to choice between the 188 and 195 I am pretty happy with my choice. I don't ski that much anymore so I needed something that would be as versatile as possible for the week or two I get a year.

I was in Alagna last March for 10 days I brought with me the S7 and a pair of Nordica Dobermann GSr 191 and I didn't take the GS boards out once, I coming from a racing background and have always travelled with multi skis but not anymore the S7 is a one ski quiver.

I have to admit a little part of me wonders about the 195s but I’m happy with the 188s.

The one thing I’d change on my next purchase would be a flat tail I don’t ride switch very often so I go for a more traditional tail.

did a season in france last winter, even though there werent many powder days i skied on my 117mm obsethed and 110mm stormfore pros quite a lot. the obsethed are a really fun ski so they were still great fun even when there was no powder. although they are both big powder skis they ski totally different, the storms are great but they are a bit like a canal barge if skiing slowly or in the trees, only realy good for wide open and steeper faces when they provide great stability. the obsetheds are great fun in any conditions due to the rocker they are still quick to turn in tight spaces ie trees but just as good on the open faces. i ski them both in all conditions, definitely worth getting a pair, as for which one its up to you

I agree and ski on Rossignol 157cm 9S oversize slalom skis. The 11m radius turns are great on piste and they are brilliantly manouverable in the powder. You just have to concentrate real hard when shusting at speed or one ski's gone before you know it!
