Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Custom Footbeds

Anyone with these in a ski or snowboard boot? I was speaking to a chap at S&R and he recommended them for some pain I'm getting. At £75 I thought it was steep so I said I'd think about it, but I since seen others that are £165! Are they really worth it? Are S&R ones any good? I dont have any problems as such but the pain on the outside of my right foot can get unbearable at times.

Gainz,

I have weird feet, very wide and very high-arced, so I was also recommended custom footbeds. For me, they clearly improved comfort and support. I used to get a pain along the edges of my feet, especially while riding a drag-lift. This pain has gone away after getting custom footbeds. For me, an added bonus was also that they have heating elements.

Go to a decent bootfitter (ie. not snow & rock). Pain on the outside of your foot is likely to be due to alignment causing your foot to roll inward and meaning you get pressure points on the outside of your feet, a footbed won't fix this you need to go somewhere that will do alignment stuff.

Gainz, If you can get up from London to Bicester, then Colin (CEM on Snowheads) who runs Solutions4Feet is a half decent bootfitter (but don't tell him I said so) Laughing
Seriously, he is an expert, and has helped out many here on Snowheads. Smile

I'd completely agree that the first thing the OP needs is a good biomechanical assessment. I'm not too sure I'd agree that the most likely cause is alignment per se and that footbeds (orthotics) can't help. As I assume the OP snowboards rather than skis (since he asked about TSA) other than orthotics I'm not too sure there are many boot modifications generally done to board boots?
I suppose his stance and binding position can be altered ??shimmed.

I'm not sure who would know alot about snowboard boot fitting. I would definatley give CEM a call, he certainly would be able to do the biomech stuff and produce footbeds (if that was what's needed). I don't know if he mods "darkside" stuff but if he doesn't I'll bet he can tell you who does.

Gainz, another vote for CEM/Solutions4Feet but, having said that, if you want somewhere in London, CEM had a look at the footbeds which had been made for me by Profeet in Fulham a couple of years before, and he said they were fine (and transferred them to the new boots which he sold me.)

Profeet wanted £165 and I guess CEM would want roughly the same but do I really need a biomechanical assessment done on computers? Isn't this what the middle classes do to brag in the pub?

I have some truly dodgy feet - partly due to an ankle break a decade ago.
I wear orthotics all the time - my regular pair are carbon fibre and cost over £300 many years ago from a specialist sports podiatrist.

I saw a milled plastic footbed at the skishow last year - shaped after a computer scan of your foot ..... thought it looked good and may give it a try next time.

I also have a pair of full cork Superfeet orthotics for skiboots - they are excellent - from Precision in ValDI many years ago and have had a couple of sets from Colin - Green Superfeet - they are c.£70 I think ...... they work well for a while but I find these lose their shape and offer less support after several months.

I would def recommend them - I couldn't do without.

No I haven't had boots fiited by CEM.
I went to a recent talk he gave and having some knowledge of biomechanics it was clear he knew what he was talking about. That's not to say I agreed with everything he said but like everything in life there are grey areas.
He certainly convinced me enough to speak to him about making an appointment for a fitting.
We had a discussion about some specific things I wanted and he suggested somewhere else that would be more appropriate. He evidently isn't a salesman or he could have taken a few hundred quid off me but is infact someone who yes Littlezookeeper makes a bit of money at this game and is an experienced bootfitter.

As for the OP's

The answer is I don't know, you would probably actually need to see someone first rather than over the internet to decide how big a problem it is, footbed modification may well be all thats required.

Ellis Brigham at Tamworth Snowdome did a good job on boot fitting and footbeds for me so guess the guys downstairs in TSA could do as well but I've not been impressed by the expertise on offer so called ski departments in some of high street branches and wouldn't trust them to sell me a pair of wellies even!

I have bought a pair of trainers from CEM - part of the process included running on a tread mill in front of him. I have had a pair of walking boots and a pair of ski boots modified by CEM. Later, I went to him for a new pair of boots. He assessed my feet, and decided that he did not have the ideal pair of boots in stock. He got in touch with Lockwoods, checked that they did have a suitable pair, giving them the size required. He then sent me on to Lockwoods, after making sure that a specific fitter was waiting for me; he made no charge for the assessment - though I did take some stock for him to Lockwoods to help out.

When I first started skiing, 20 years or so ago now, I used to get terrible foot cramps. I was recommended footbeds by the winter sports shop (Nevisport in Glasgow) due to my high arches, and it made a huge difference, so I've used them ever since. Admittedly in those days I don't think biomechanical tests and boot professionals really existed, and Snowheads definitely didn't, so I went with the shop advice, which paid dividends.

When I had new boots fitted in Chamonix a couple of years ago by Footworks they recommended footbeds, so maybe the original advice wasn't so bad.

I my new pair fired by CEM at the start of each season.

I have many trainees that have had their boots fitted by him, including current national team members.

I would thoroughly recommend him.

I don't think that you need to have dodgy feet/ankles to have your boots fitted. Most skiers will feel the benefit of correctly fitted boots.

I went to CEM ahead of my second ski trip for boots. He measured my feet, and as I have narrow feet said that there are very few beginner - intermediate level boots with difference width fitting. He told me he could sell me a pair of boots, do his best with them, but the chances are that I'd be no more comfortable than I would be in a pair of hire boots. He said to come back when I have about 5 weeks+ under my belt and would be able to manage a boot designed for a more advanced skier (than beginner going on intermediate), where they do make boots in narrower fits.

Great honest advice I thought. I still don't have a pair of boots, but I'm planning to get an appointment to go and see CEM before my next trip (Christmas).

cant be arsed to go to bicester. went there once and don't plan to do it again in this lifetime. I think i might go with TSA and get their fitted custom footbeds. I could even go to SMALLZOOKEEPER, as I'm in chamonix but will i have time? i doubt it. Out of interest where is your shop in relation to the UCPA Cosmique centre SMALLZOOKEEPER?

Gainz, i can recommend CEM who has fit several pair of boots for me plus footbeds, exceptional after sales service and support. If you cant be bothered to go to bicester Profeet in London are good, i had boots and footbeds done by them as well successfully but prefer CEM

if you cant be arsed to go to bicester why would you waste your holiday time getting footbeds when on holiday?

Gainz, Where's that, the one by Casa Valero? If so with the UCPA on your left, end of the road (mini roundabout), turn right, continue until you reach the Hotel Morgane on your left, we're diagonally opposite the Morgane on the other side of the river, you'll need to let us know when you want us as it's interseason and we're setting up, painting and al that jazz.
