Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Resorts close to Geneva with decent hotel.

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Group of 4 been to Chamonix for the last 4 years, we've decided it's time for a change.

Can anyone recommend a (VERY close to a lift) hotel in a resort within an hour or so of Geneva ?

We're only going for 4 days so the resort doesn't need to be huge.

We'd normally pay under €100 per room per night.

Really want to try and do ski in/out or be very close to a lower resort gondola, had enough of lugging my skis round Chamonix for the last four years !

Dates are 2nd Janauary for 4 nights.

bladeskier, as marcellus, suggests, Les Airelles is in a fantastic location - drag lift is literally 10m from the door, and it's a very cosy, traditional hotel with a bar and food.

However, the rooms are the smallest I have ever stayed in and ours, (don't know if they are all like this) had an 'en suite' which was like something on an overnight ferry. Moulded plastic pod into which you step up, and then 'seal' the door. Having said that, we enjoyed Les Carroz very much and would go again, but have since had the Hotel Arbaron recommended to us - not ski in/out so not such a good location, but it's not a huge village http://www.arbaron.fr/en/

Both hotels do short breaks

bladeskier, Try the milk hotel at the base of timalets red run, then a flat run down to gondola

http://www.milkhotel.fr/en/index.html

2nd jan is still a highish season week

Les Airelles does do larger rooms according to the price list outside it (looking at it 2 weeks ago)

the best, but most expensive, but the best restaurant is Les Servages d'Armelle, just across form the milk hotel, but not your budget........

http://www.servages.com/uk/index.php

The drag lift can be a bit of a pain as the operator can be a bit tardy some mornings......

Try Saint-Gervais. 50 Mins from Geneva Airport and part of the linked Espace Diamant Area with Megeve. The Hotel Carlina, is right on the home run.

Cheers.

Go an extra 5 minutes up the road and stay in flaine instead, most of the hotels are very close tot the lifts

also if there is bad snowfall, like last year it can be tricky skiing all the way down to les carroz

Hutchy, er what "hotels" in flaine would they be then? I can only think of the club hotels that are tour operator run?

and last year early snowfall was fine for piste skiing, plus the pistes around les airelles are cannoned and timalets is cannoned all the way down to the gondola..........

Plus les carroz is much better in falling snow and bad weather due to all the trees and its reasonably pleasant to look at....

Looks like Hotel Arbaron has closed down, may be bought by MGM, they seem to be buying and developing quite a lot now in Les Carroz.
Hopefully snow making being installed on Blue "Combe" slope down to village this Autumn ready for coming season so that there is an option to the Red slope "Timalets".
Note that - Flaine is about 20 minute drive from Les Carroz (1100m el. up to 1840m then drop down to Flaine at 1650m).

skier52, Arbaron has not closed down, its Belle Pistes which is just above the beginners area with the drag lifts that has been purchased by MGM, and due to be demolished next year sometime? They were selling off bits of hotel stuff in the summer. MGM want to add it as an annex to Chalet de Jouvance, except they now have a little problem.........

No more snow making as far as i could see on combe in the summer (walked up most of it)

Fact - Arbaron was closed in summer, family cannot agree what to do with it, so likely to be sold.
I know that Belles Pistes has been sold to MGM, but dont know about "little problem", what is it?
They plan to install snowmaking on Combe (has been the plan for the last couple of years but presumably recession has delayed it), I had hoped that all the pipes etc around bottom of Gondola area was a sign that work was imminent, I'm still hoping they get on with it asap.

bladeskier, How about Le Grand Bornand? Can recommend Hotel L'Alpage if you are looking for a warm welcome, good food and a charming hostess who speaks very good English. The hotel is very traditional and not exactly top of the range in terms of decor but is in an excellent location and has a very personal touch about it.

skier52, This has got a little off topic from OP original question but...... we had a long discussion at our co prop meeting about the lack of people visiting les carroz in late june/ july (and the freezing rotten weather) and arbaron was used as an illustration of how bad things were, but it was only said they had closed perhaps for the summer and would reopen in winter, maybe it has changed since? MGM may have a problem with the current owners of chalet de jouvance as they didn't tell them about belle pistes sharing chalet de jouvance facilities and the co prop is already up and running...............

combe only really needs snowmaking under gron, so maybe. They have enough heavy stuff up the mountain to do it, three large JCB things near oasis drag lift / bottom of chamois putting pipes etc in, so fingers crossed. It will make timalets better if they do it as it will be quieter and not have people falling over all over the place as they really should be on combe...... Very Happy

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
Have you thought about these resorts? All are around 1 hour and 15 minutes from Geneva and have lots of ski in ski out or at least ski to the door hotel and chalet options. In Avoriaz you can ski right through the resort - it's totally car free.

Take a look at:

http://www.hotel-marmotte.com/uk/index.php in Les Gets
http://www.hotel-marmotte.com/uk/index.php in Morzine
http://www.pierreetvacances.com/fr-fr/location-hiver-avoriaz-balcons_AVK-H_fp in Avoriaz

The advantage of Avoriaz over the others is that it's significantly higher at 1800m but all 3 resorts give excellent access to the massive Portes du Soleil

Happy holidays!

St Gervais/Megeve form part of the Evasion Mont Blanc area, not the Espace Diamant. There are plans to link them, though.
Also the "home run" to St Gervais is rarely open, the town is only 800m above sea level.
That said, I like St Gervais, been there twice. It's a proper town, not just a ski station and there are plenty of good restaurants to chose from. Much better value than Megeve.
Can't vouch for the Carlina but it is close to the bottom gondola station.

because the person who posted the question wanted a decent hotel close to geneva for under 100 quid a night, who said it had to be in the PDS?

YodelMagazine, much as I love Les Gets, it cannot be described as having 'excellent' access to PdS - maybe if you have a car but on skis it requires good planning if you want a decent ski on the Avoriaz side. The Marmotte is in an excellent position but unlikely to get a room for under £100 a night there. In fact we always think the residents there look really miserable when you walk past in the evening wink as we go back to a cosy little apartment.

Thanks for Jouvence info. carroz, still off-topic but www.grand-massif.com now informs us that blue slope "Combe" is covered by 26 snowmakers from bottom of Gron chair to bottom of Les Carroz Gondola. Good news, particularly as last season this part of Combe was only open for a handful of days.

Jivebaby, and skier52 From walking up most of it this summer, (up to the walk down to the bridge over the gron stream) the only ones that there then are the 2 near the base. so if they have put it all in they have been rather quick, but there was enough stuff up the mountain to do it. Last winter I only came down a bit of combe twice, and that was very early from doing the off piste from 7 freres, you go over the bridge and walk up to combe, Other than that i avoid it as its always stoney, my bases dont like it at all. In fact last season there was a huge queue at gron, and started down, only to see loads of people taking skis off lower down, so we turned round and walked back up to the queue!

we left a month ago, and not back until december, the recession has finally caught up with our company, so need to do a bit more work Sad

If they have put it in it will be great, means gron will be quieter......

Spent season in Les Carroz last winter and only blowers were the 2 near bottom Combe (in position for a few years). Went over in summer for 3 weeks, meant to walk up Combe but too much DIY needed so could not check on the snowmakers progress. Quote from GM website today :-
"La piste Combe (piste bleue) a été équipée en neige de culture (26 enneigeurs du départ du TS de Gron au départ de la Télécabine), garantissant ainsi le retour station à ski toute la saison sur piste facile. D'autres enneigeurs ont été rajoutés sur les pistes Chamois et Marmottes."
Dont arrive til mid December but look forward to smaller "Gron queues" from now on and less slow traffic down Timalets red.

bladeskier, Sure you are sorted by now, but if not, give us a try in Morzine. Can do you a good snowHead's deal for those 4 nights.
Close to ski bus (1 min), town center(7 mins), and 5 mins to a lift if you want to walk it.
New indoor pool opening for this season, just 5 mins walk away.
Contact Nina on the website below and mention snowHead 's.

Stayed in Hotel Arbaron a couple of years ago and even in early March it wasn't full. Rooms definately in need of some modernisation although from their website it looks as though they're making an effort. At the time thought it was a little expensive but that's the Euro for you!

Both Carroz & Morzine good from a transfer perspective and both have plenty to explore piste wise. Smile
