Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Looking to but some Dynastar Legends, not sure what length tho..

I generally board offpiste but last yr having a ski lesson off piste, I realised that it was pretty fun too. So thinking on a pair of Dynastar Legend Sultans (or similar) so I can venture off piste a little more but don't have a clue what length to go for. Vital stats:
Ability Intermediate I suppose (happy blue/red/black, don't do moguls but like a little air time and would like to venture into the pow more
Height 5' 8"
Weight 75kg.

My current skis are 160 which, although fun, are a little short (I think).

Thoughts appreciated.

If the 160s feel a bit short, they probably are. I am never one to push people longer and longer and longer, but the Legends are 172 or 165 - that means you are either going to get a bit longer or a lot longer.

I ended up with a pair of Legends that came up at a price too good not to buy, and they ski like trains - they want to go fast, lay down big wide carves, and ski fairly long for their size. The extra length will be useful off piste, but my experience has been that width is the critical factor for float. I assume you are looking at the 85s for offpiste ability?

I'd definitely suggest testing out a pair or two if you haven't tried them already. If you can get to Hemel then you are welcome to have a go on mine which are 172 85s, but I don't think you'll really get the feel of them in a fridge. They really need a big open piste to get a feel for them.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Monium, thanks for the feedback and offer. Unfortunately being in Glasgow, I'm a little far away from Hemel, but thanks for the offer none the less! You hit the nail on the head length wise - 165 not that much longer and 172, well quite a bit longer. I'm used to Fischer Red Heat's which are pretty narrow to be honest and are piste orientated anyway so tend to sink when going off piste.

I had some Sultan 85s in 165 (warranty replacement for the 165 Legend 8000s I had before) - I bought them at 68kg, and tbh they were too short then, but were the first skis I'd bought and didn't really know any better. Very good in the bumps, but I gave them to my Dad this year - if I had had the 172s I think I'd still have a place in my quiver for them, but the 165s just weren't getting used anymore (I'm 72kg now).

FWIW worth they're great skis, although I didn't find find them as train-like as Monium. They are very happy at speed, but were also fine at low speeds, and preferred small to medium radius turns. For their size they actually floated very well in powder, but their real home is cut-up variables and moguls - but more of a dance down it than smash through and dominate it ski (in that length anyway). I just found that some of my other longer skis did exactly that better - more stable, and more 'smashability', with very little piste performance lost (and actually better for big fast gs turns).

So yeah, I'd go long...
